On a day which chilled the bones, and in a match which dulled the senses, the return of Emmanuel Adebayor from the gates of hell to normality provided some warmth and comfort.
The Blues needed something to cheer them. The late, great disappointment of Wednesday's defeat at Old Trafford was still hanging in the air like a shroud.
This was never going to be a day of panache and dash, but one to negotiate, collect three points, and head home to recuperate.
The fact that Adebayor started the game, and fired in the opening goal of a poor game, was a reason to be cheerful.
It was just 23 days ago that the big, affable Togolese striker sat at a roadside in Angola, cradling a dying friend as machine-gun bullets chattered all around.
The trauma of that terrorist attack left him mentally dislocated, suffering from stress, and contemplating life itself, not the trivia of football.
As he made his way back to his native land to grieve in the arms of his family and bury the dead, there could be no thought of when he would return to Manchester.
It was an irrelevance, given the enormity of what had happened.
But life goes on, and it is important that Adebayor gets back to his business as soon as possible - and his business is scoring goals.
He hadn't done that since the opener against Chelsea back on December 5, and in the meantime Carlos Tevez has taken on the mantle with a staggering run of 14 in 13 games.
But Sunday's goal was less about winning a football match and more about relief, and any City fan disgruntled by a less than impressive City performance should remember the grief that lay behind that Adebayor smile.
The feeling in and around the stadium going into the game was pretty much the same as it had been in the immediate aftermath of the previous derby defeat, at Old Trafford in September.
Anguish
On that occasion, the Blues had a Carling Cup clash with a virtual Fulham second string on which to vent their anger, or at least ease their anguish.
The fans expected a torrent of goals to wash away the memories of that late 4-3 defeat, and the expectation was similar against a Pompey side whose football worries are only matched by their financial ones.
But sometimes, after such wearying emotion, and crushing loss, you just have to be grateful for a positive result.
So it was against Fulham in September, with a tedious extra-time win, and so it was here.
If Roberto Mancini could have hand-picked opponents for the next league fixture after that exhausting semi- final, Pompey would have been top of the list.
And when the first half ended with the Blues 2-0 up, that assessment was spot on.
You get the feeling that, for all the talent at his disposal, Mancini does not have the players he needs to play the type of game which he prefers to do.
He began with the diamond shape which he employed so effectively at Inter Milan, with Martin Petrov curiously at the tip, either by design or accident. That wasn't working, and Ireland took on the role, with a little more success.
When the Blues did go ahead, it was Ireland's perception, Pompey's clueless defence and a piece of excellent therapy for Emmanuel Adebayor which combined to make the breakthrough.
Ireland produced the only incisive pass of the half to free Adebayor, who took full advantage of the visitors' ropey attempt at an offside trap and produced an expert finish.
That eased the pressure a little and in time added in the first half, Vincent Kompany rose to brilliantly crash home a header from Petrov's corner and virtually put the game beyond Portsmouth.
Carlos Tevez underlined the fact that this was going to be an ordinary afternoon when he wriggled free in the box. From a Bellamy cross, and then hit the post from close range.
That denied him a goal which he would have celebrated by whipping off his shirt to reveal a T-shirt in support of Wayne Bridge.
That would have been another moment in which City - whose players pride themselves on being a `family' - could heal wounds which lie outside the game of football.
What is your verdict? Have your say.

Forget the off-side claims because the execution was superb.
And good to see a headed goal from Kompany which gave James absolutely no chance.
Poor entertainment but job done and points secured so well done to Mancini.
The defeat by the Rags in midweek had obviously affected the team but the game was won so it is a positive surely.

I'm dismayed by people whingeing about our performance yesterday. It was a big downer going out of the cup last week, and re-integrating Adebayor into the side was also a priority. An unspectacular victory is a victory all the same, and the pyrotechnics will soon return. Maybe some so-called fans have just become a little bit spoiled of late.

We are in a nice position in the Prem with games in hand and players to come back and a good chance of progressing further in the FA Cup
Get behind the lads

1. The free flowing football seems to have disappeared and the emphasis looks to be on putting eleven blue shirts behind the ball. De Jong and Barry look like they would get a nose bleed if the crossed the half way line.
2. Stop ranting at Ireland who is being played out of position !! Play him at the tip of the diamond and leave him there and we will once again see the best of him. He's not a left or right winger and definately not a RB. Three times he was left exposed to marking one of Portsmouth 6ft 6 giants.
3. Petrov is pants and unwilling to play the team game. He's not quick enough or clever enough to play wide right, having to check inside all the time which slows down our forward play too often. AND HE WON'T TACKLE. Not sure why Mancini kept him on the pitch after he argued with him on the touchline.
4. Why are we in the market for two more defensive midfielders?
5. When are we going to wake up to the short corners and defending a throw in deep in our half.
People criticised Hughes for the defensive shambles but under Mr Mancini things are no better. Be honest a half decent team would have seen us off 2 - 4 yesterday. I also believe under Hughes we would have been at Wembley as we would have been more positive in the home leg.
I pray that Mr Manc has all the answers and he has my backing but the Messiah he isn't.

Off topic ...I've been having a text battle with a Red friend since last Wed's result. He sent me the following joke yesterday which made me smile and I can't top yet...

Hey albatross, I know how you feel, my mates ahve been taking the p since last week and I haven't been able to top this one:
It's just before the City - United game. Rooney goes into the United changing room to find all his teammates looking a bit glum.
"What's up?" he asks.
"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it's quite important but it's only City and we can't really be bothered".
Rooney looks at them and says "Well, I reckon I can beat these by myself, you lads go down the pub".
So Rooney goes out to play City by himself and the rest of the United lads go off for a few jars.
After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the teletext on. A big cheer goes up as the screen reads, "City 0 - United 1 (Rooney 10 minutes)". He's beating City all by himself!
Anyway, a few more pints later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers "It must be full time now, let's see how he got on". They put the teletext on again -"Result from Eastlands ... City 1 (Barry 89 minutes) - Man Utd 1(Rooney 10 minutes)".
They can't believe it, he has single handedly got a draw against City!
They rush back to the stadium to congratulate him. They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, sat with his head in his hands.
He refuses to look at them. "I've let you down, I've let you down."
"Don't be daft Wazza, you got a draw against City all by yourself. And they only scored at the very end!"
"No, No, I have, I've let you down... I got sent off after 12 minutes"
If anyone has good jokes and can help me get back at my mates please post them here. Cheers guys.

1/02/2010 at 14:51 not as boring as you .. why dont you stick to the rags side you walloon... 3 more points on way to 4th place wasnt a great performance but will settle for 3 points every time ... under hughes that would have been a draw or a defeat

No width, no excitement, no crowd noise.
Might as well have watched it on teletext.
I hope this isn't a indication of whats to come.

I can support city and watch the result come in on the BBC vidi-printer.
I go to the games to enjoy the football and a good atmosphere.
Winning is not everything but most fans now think it is at the expense of every thing else.
I hope these negetive tactics that Mancini uses will change I don't wan't to go to the match on a saturday and clockwatch because of the non event on the pitch.
If we want to become a world force who would choose to watch City the way they played on sunday rather than those rags who to be honest played excellent fast flowing football and used every bit of the park.

Yesterday has to be the worst performance at COMS since Stuart Pearce departed. It's all early doors but am I the only one not to be impressed with the way Mancini sets the team out. 1. We were more lethargic than the players. You could hear a pin drop at times !
Anyway, we won and kept a clean sheet. Hope the crowd are more enthusiastic against Bolton - definately motivates the team.
I love Mancini, he's the man - I know we're all shell shocked from the semi, but a win is a win !
Come on you blues, onwards and upwards !!!

Sorry Rick, but I can't agree with your sentiments regarding worse performance. Some of the dross we had to put up with under Hughes, and Sven to a lesser extent, was far worse than the poor performance we got on Sunday. And they both didn't seem to have a plan B if things weren't working out. RM at least is bold enough to change things. And at least we won performing poorly. With MH we were crap and drew or lost!!!
Alan S, Northwich (01/02/2010 at 16:39)
Under Mancini we've played 9 and won 7. On Saturday we did what was needed to secure the 3 points with an understrength team. Certain players were clearly jaded after a physically and emotionally demanding game in midweek and Mancini was right to rest Bellamy and SWP.
Going back to the way we played under Pearce? We rarely ever scored in those days. We're going to end up in the Championship? Get a grip of yourselves. I've never read such rubbish.
Colin Bell's Boots, Wilmslow (01/02/2010 at 16:42)
I think you need a reality check of just how far the club has come in a short space of time. The prospects are incredibly positive for future success.
For god's sake, yesterday's game was very poor, but how many of those have there been this season.
When Hughes was here the defence was poor and hence we conceeded too many poor goals. Now Mancini has to a large extent stopped that particular failing you are still bloody moaning. Some of you are beginning to sound like the idiot Rags fans ! Never happy.
Get over it and support the team instead of finding fault at every opportunity.
City fans are renowned for their common sense and good humour but some of you are a an embarassment to those qualities.
