City back Cook

Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook will fight on with the full support of the club’s owners – despite his pre-match derby gaffe.

The club insist that Cook’s job is safe after he was filmed boasting to fans in New York that the Blues would beat United in Wednesday’s Carling Cup semi-final.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to have used those remarks to motivate his players ahead of the match, which they won 3-1 to claim a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Cook also stated at the same fans’ meeting that City were on course to become “the biggest and best club in the world”, overtaking United, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

That has led to speculation about his future, with one newspaper this morning reporting that Cook might exit Eastlands this summer.

But a City spokesman said on Friday: “This is an isolated and ill-informed piece of speculation which is completely without foundation.”

And M.E.N. Sport understands that Cook is valued by owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak.

They feel that Cook is making great strides in overseeing City’s corporate development, and has worked hard to strengthen the club’s relationship with their fans.

It is not the first time that the chief executive’s comments have led to controversy.

He stated in his first major interview that previous owner Thaksin Shinawatra was “a great guy to play golf with” after being charged with corruption offences in his native Thailand.

Cook later confessed that he felt dreadful about making these comments, and said he regretted failing to do proper research on Thaksin.

Cook also accused AC Milan of “bottling it” over City’s unsuccessful £100million bid to sign Kaka last January.

More recently, he slipped up at another supporters’ event by announcing that former striker Uwe Rosler was being inducted into the “Manchester United Hall of Fame”.

And he faced heavy criticism for the club’s handling of Mark Hughes’ departure last month.

It emerged that Cook had started to identify possible replacements for Hughes as early as last summer, despite having publicly stated that City would be patient with him.

What do you think? Have your say.

Stay in the Background and do your job to help put City where they should be. Leave the publicity to others. You are making to many gaffs.

I really really hope this is the same backing they gave Mark Hughes. Garry Cook is the worst thing that has happened to City since Thaksin (ironic isn't it). Uwe Rosler, Kaka, New York, "he plays golf"....how many more of these do we have to put up with.

He knows nothing about football, nothing about City, and nothing about humility. Please get rid of this man and bring in someone who will deal with the business without ego and without attracting all the wrong headlines. Follow Mancini's example, a little humility with confidence is what we're after, not a brash loudmouth. There are plenty of Chief Executives out there perfectly placed who can do this job

Alastair Mckintosh maybe?

Get rid now the guy is a liability.

I honestly cringe when this gentleman speaks. He is the worst ambassador possible for our club. Let's please conduct ourselves with quiet dignity; let's wrap up transfer targets on the sly and not noisily boast about becoming the biggest club in the world. We used to be liked as a club, but that tide will turn the more this chap opens his trap.

The dreaded vote of confidence, and what about the Ronaldinho, Lescott, Dunne and Hughes
gaffes?

Vote of confidence = P45 !!
The club would insist that his job was safe, afterall Garry Cook is the THE club whilst the Chairman and owners are out of the country. I just wish he would employ a proffessional PR front man / woman and leave the talking to them. You don't hear a peep from Buck, Gill, Kenyon etc. Just stick to what you are good at Garry, leave the team to Mr Mancini and the bragging to us WHEN the club finally gives us something to crow about.

I'm starting to like Garry Cook. Anyone who can upset the red-supporting Guardian so much must be doing the right thing (Daniel Taylor's piece today is what you'd expect to hear in a school playground). And Cook did NOT say City were going to beat United in the Carling Cup (the footage is on the Sun's website). He said it 'is not a question of if, but when, City will get to Wembley,' which sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to say to fellow supporters to me.

He's a joke and the sooner someone shows him the door the better

I'd say he's history! I haven't followed the gaffes but it does appear that he manages about one huge one every three months or so and to suggest that Uwe Rosler is being inducted in to the United haul of fame is about as bad as it can get. I suspect that in America, although he was very good at the marketing stuff behind the scenes, in such a huge coutry, he wasn't called on so much to make comments that would be published throughout the nation and I would think that because he was at Nike for years, he knew the company and the product inside out so was far less likely to muck it up. I believe he admitted that he knew nothing really about football when he joined us and having been in the states for so long and not being a football fan he probably had no idea what he was letting himself in for. Outside his comfort zone but thinking he would be fine, he is more naive than anything but I don't think, as much as he has worked hard behind the scenes, that he has much room for manoeuvre after his last faux pas.

I think the media will do anything it can to knock down anything to do with City. We are all so quick to be critical, but less able to praise. The guy flew all the way to NY to have a beer and honour City fans there. Give him credit.

Unfortunately, Garry Cook's lack of class has ultimately tarnished the club's reputation as we have been tarred with the same brush.

Although the club and it's fans have maintained their dignity, this guy makes me cringe every time he opens his mouth. This won't be lost on the arabs and I don't see him being here beyond the end of the season.

My opinions re: Gary Cook are somewhat mixed. I think he has done many good things since his time at the Club, largely in improving club facilities and bringing a better identity to Eastlands. It feels a lot more like 'home' than it used to be.

He has also quite clearly been able to sell 'the project' to some world class players. Being paid a fortune is one thing, but seeing no light at the end of the tunnel will often dissuade a player from moving just for a large pay cheque. Where his judgement comes into question on this issue is allowing the pursuit of Santa Cruz and Lescott for grossly exaggerated transfer fees. If, as alleged, he was instrumental in selling Dunney then I would question his motives and judgement. As error prone as Dunney had become, on the evidence to date he was better than his replacements IMO.

Where Gary Cook lets himself down is when he opens his mouth in public. His latest gaffe apparently did nothing other than make a few ex-pat Blues in New York cheer, but also apparently motivate the Rags to put in what was apparently their best performance of the season on Weds night. Giving supporters what you think you want them to hear is one thing, but setting yourself up to be shot down is another. As it turns out, what he has also done is hand the Rags another stick to try and beat us with.

Where the Guardian is concerned there's no smoke without fire. I have a feeling that Mr Cook may well be seeking new pastures in the not too distant future. As efficient as he may well be, he wasn't Sheikh Mansour's appointment and not everything has gone as well as perhaps His Excellency would have wanted . Sounds familiar, doesn't it ?

I think we can be looking at a very positive future for our club,
We just played Utd who 5 years ago would of put their reserves out but needed the first team to win in 2010, and lets be fair they keep playing to the whistle and we can now move on from that semi final.

We have made great strides, we have a shrewd and clever businessman owner, and a very good young coach in Mancini.

However, Mr Cook needs to do his job away from the limelight, if he is so confident of our future status (and I hope he is right) there should be no need to voice it.

Actions speak louder than words, we are on the right tracks but it does take time to put a winning side together, we must remember winning is partly in the mind and Utd, Chelsea & Arsenal have that winning mind set and City can get there too, but not overnight.

I don't look at the big three and think I dislike these clubs for their success (or their local rivalry in Utds case) but just want to be positive about our club.

The futures bright, time to believe it.

The man is accident prone and seems unable to control what comes out of his mouth, his most recent remarks have made the club a laughing stock, you are permitted to boast and brag when you have a trophy in the cupboard,we havent yet so he should stop making such stupid remarks until we have.

This guy is an embarrassment too the club, probably on a par with Kenyon, I wonder if Mr Mansour would consider approaching Mr Bernstein for this position, a gentleman with blue blood running through his veins.

He was only saying what we know to be the truth. But just before the match wasn't the best time to say it. We know that the Rags are imploding & despite their protestations,so do they. His words only served to gee them up. After all, this is the team that has lost so many games already this season (including Burnley & third-tier Leeds) & are generally accepted to be punching above their weight.

love him or loathe him we have to stay behind Gary Cook besides he gets right up United's noses so that cant be a good thing.
I dont blame him for boasting before the Carling Cup semi final that we would beat United that is part of his job and its about time we had a PR man niggling away at the 'rags'
Furthermore when he made the boast he didn't realise Mancini would choose tactics that were ultra defensive in the home leg where United were there for the taking and in essence it was our manager who failed us not Gary Cook.To be honest I'm still annoyed at Mancini it was the biggest pivitol moment we have had for years,it was a golden opportunity to write in stone MCFC mean buisness and it was a clear opportunity to win our first trophy for 34 years and shut that lot up for good.No Mancini obviously doesn't understand our suffering, the ridicule we get not just from United and their banner but the media where this since the Derby defeat they have had a field day,YES blame Mancini for CITY not getting to Wembley his tactics shown no belief or conviction and it has left most of the clubs supporters thoroughly disappointed so please give Gary Cook the space he deserves.

I still support Gary Cook based upon the fantastic work he has done behind the scenes, and I still believe he is the right man for the job. However, I also believe he should stick to what he's good at, and this exludes public speaking.

I wonder who the club are sounding out as they give him reassuring messages of support. As they say "what goes around comes around".

Mr Cook, please just carry on with your job whichout feeling the need to open your mouth.

I would much rather have success first before we start spouting off. There are no trophies for being the richest club in the world, so we should be quiet until we do achieve something.

So Gary Cook can't speak out his heart at a fans meeting in a pub in New York? Utter rubbish. And I don't buy into the rumour Fergie used it to motivate his players. Even if he had, who cares. Please don't come on here and tell it's Cooks' fault we missed out on Wembley this time. Again utter rubbish!!
