EMMANUEL Adebayor's one-man war with Arsenal in September brought his storming form to a halt.
And now City boss Mark Hughes is hoping that the re-match with the Gunners, in tonight's Carling Cup quarter-final, will stoke up the big striker's fires once again.
Hughes believes that Adebayor's early-season form had him marked down as one of the hottest strike properties in the league. But then, on an emotional Eastlands afternoon, he ended up with two FA charges, for a stamp on former teammate Robin van Persie and a joyous goal celebration which sparked angry scenes among visiting Arsenal fans.
He ended up with a three-match ban for the former offence and a suspended two-match ban for the latter, as well as a typhoon of bad publicity, most of it unwarranted.
Since coming back, Adebayor has picked up an ankle injury which has inhibited his effectiveness, but Hughes also feels that the ban itself disrupted his momentum.
"At the time of the Arsenal game he was playing as well as any forward I have seen in the Premier League in recent years," said Hughes. "He has had an injury, which has been a factor, but since he has come back from the suspension he hasn't reached the same level.
"There is no reason he can't get back up to speed tonight and again at the weekend. They are two huge games for us and everyone in the team realises their significance."
Opinion
Hughes had a quiet chat with Adebayor after the incidents in the last game, but said he felt no need to remind the player of his responsibilities ahead of tonight's game.
"We discussed that in the past and I don't think it needs to be revisited," said Hughes, who made it plain that there had never been a question of leaving him out.
"Everyone has had an opinion about what happened on that day. We drew a line under it. It is a new game against different personnel in terms of the team Arsenal are likely to pick and I don't think there is an issue."
Adebayor was widely condemned, although some commentators - including Ipswich boss Roy Keane and Spurs manager Harry Redknapp - pointed out that the Arsenal fans who reacted violently should have been the focus of the criticism.
And Hughes says that Adebayor's contrition about the incident involving van Persie, after the controversy overshadowed the Blues' 4-2 win, has been passed over.
"He was very apologetic immediately and people ignored that in the aftermath of what went on and the comments that were made," said Hughes. "He apologised to the boy involved, he took his punishment, as he had to, and we move on."
City are set to welcome Craig Bellamy back tonight, although Hughes was yesterday still weighing up which two out of the Welsh ace, Robinho and Carlos Tevez, should play. Gareth Barry is also a doubt after reporting a knee injury.
Scans showed up no problem, but the England man, who has also been troubled by groin trouble, may be missing.
Hughes is also pondering his options at right back, with Nedum Onuoha a possible inclusion after Pablo Zabaleta and Micah Richards have both suffered loss of form.

Johnno for Ireland if we're winning with 10 minutes left this time!
Give Barry a rest so he's okay for the weekend.

Despite Sunday's defeat by Chelsea, the Gunners have been in good form over the past few weeks so in my book tonight will be a tough game. This could kick-start the season, and the confidence of a win would set us up nicely for the Chelsea match. A defeat would however be a serious setback IMO to what has already become a stuttering campaign.
Let's not even think about anything other than a win Fellow Blues. Let's raise the roof Hamburg-style and cheer the lads through to the semis. Then bring on the Rags for a double-derby.

GK: Given
RB: Nedum, CB: Toure, CB: Kompany, LB: Lescott
HMF: NDJ
RMF: Weiss, CM: Ireland or Johnson, LMF: Robinho
CF: Adebayor & Bellamy
The inclusion of the usual back-four would create the same problems therefore shake it up a bit and if Ireland is running around like a mad woman's **** then give Johnson the nod!

I'm looking into my crystal ball now and can see the pattern of the game....
Knock the ball out wide as much as we can so SWP can lose it running down blind alleys,he may attempt the odd cross like he did for Ade to score against the Gunners last time, but think that was his last cross into the box form open play??
Then if we knock it out wide left Bridge will bomb forward why I don't know as he offers very little offensively, again he rarely attempts to cross the ball and it usually ends in a over ellaborate passing move with the wide player on that side loosing possession.I actually think Bridge is no better than Garrido if no worse,Garrido wasn't the best defender admittedly but being so young coming form Spanish footabll which is almost played at walking pace compared to the Premiership, was improving greatly towards the end of last few appearances. He also had one sweet left foot best crosser after Petrov, could he a free kick on goal(we have no one at present) and kept possession with that Spanish mentality of keeping the ball with accurate passing!
At least this one can't end a draw!

Anyway, that aside, I know it is too much to ask Mr. Hughes but could we give our exciting young talents a chance tonight and I don't mean 5 minutes at the end, give them a start, show them you believe in them, it would surely boost their confidence. Nedum, Johnno and Weiss all to start for me. They are all good enough in my book to compete with Arsenal, certainly if they are putting out their kids. I hate to say it but Fergie knows how to bring his kids through (another example last night), rather than blocking their path with mates and overpriced players that he has to pick every week to justify their big price tags. Gibson is no better than Johnno, Obertan is not even on the same planet as Weiss! Don't be afraid to make the big decisions Mr Hughes! They are what will define you.

Hopeful that this lot can find something in themselves to prove the 'only in it for the money' doubters were wrong, hopeful that they can finally show the guts and ambition that has been completely missing since the last time we played Arsenal.
I remain less than hopeful that this squad has the raw desire to win trophies, the desire that the Manures and Chelseas have in abundance. We still lack a leader on the pitch and since Adebayor's suspension we've looked listless and not remotely up for it.
If we go through tonight, expect Dunne to lead Villa to victory over us in the next round, Ferguscum to play his strongest possible team to do anything he can to stop us getting to a final or Chelsea to just be Chelsea and brush us aside.
I'm realistic about Saturday, where we'll get convincingly beaten. That's how far we still have to go. Let's see tonight how much true ambition this lot really have.
