In some quarters, that was the interpretation placed on Mark Hughes' explanation of why the Argentine ace began the 2-2 draw at Liverpool on the bench.
But Hughes made it plain that Tevez had suffered with knee problems, while coach Eddie Niedzwiecki added that the stresses of the player's international commitments also contributed to the decision.
After a week back in training, Tevez is in line for a return to the starting XI for the Eastlands clash with Hull on Saturday.
Hughes said: “We were mindful of the fact that he has had bangs on his knees, which has been giving him concern.
“We went to Anfield with a different shape and were quite comfortable in the first half.
“But it was always my intention to bring Carlos on at some point of the game to try to win it for us.
“And he was excellent, showing good energy and doing fantastic for the second goal. I am pleased for him because he looked really sharp.”
Niedzwiecki hit out at the suggestions that Tevez will be spending much of his time on the sidelines, which had been one of the factors behind his decision to leave neighbours United in the summer.
“That was a case of people making something out of the fact that we had gone to Liverpool with a game plan, and because he made such an impact coming on he was handed a label that was completely wrong,” the coach said.
“Because of the size of squad we have, and the players we have, there will be times when the boss has to leave certain individuals out or play a different system.
“We are very flexible with what we can do, and the boss will use that, but to label Carlos as an impact sub is completely wrong.”
Tevez has also had a testing World Cup qualifying campaign under the wacky managership of Diego Maradona, which appeared to lead to him talking about retirement from football last week, although City have taken the quotes with a pinch of salt.
Niedzwiecki feels the physical and emotional difficulties he faced with Argentina, who scraped through to South Africa, may have taken a toll as well.
“He came on at Liverpool and showed hunger and desire, and did change things,” he said.
“But you have to take into account that he had been away with Argentina, and there was a lot of speculation about that as well, a lot of emotion around the national team and Carlos.”

Whilst I am still not convinced we are Top 4, we have still not been able to field our strongest team and welcome back and more action from Robinho/Johnson/Weiss/Ononuha and Kompany ( all proved their worth last season exception Johnson, of course)
- subs for me should be SWP and Bellamy, they are suited for less than 90mins play.
Come on City!

Reading between the lines he seemed to be implying that he would "retire from (international) football if Argentina win the world cup"
I don't think he meant that he would retire completely from football - we all know he's not the cleverest guy on the planet but I don't think he's THAT stupid...

I'll bet we don't see many Rags on here today, after baconface got it wrong last night. Besiktas doubled their CL goal tally last night LOL. However, I'll be surprised if they have people shouting for his head, unlike on these forums with the likes of Duckegg etc shouting "Hughesless out". I don't know who's worse on this forum, the negnumpties or Rags. In fact I'd prefer the Rags, at least they have a reason to slag us off!
On a separate note, I watched 'Looking for Eric' last night, my daughter bought it as a pressie for my birthday; it was a good watch. However, what I found very interesting was that FC United had a hand in the production side of it. In fact the flyer inside the DVD was produced by FC United, with a competition to win tickets to FC United game. It seems that the real Rags have abandoned one of their icons. It must be like a slap in the face for the Rag fans who bought it.

He's a growing talent, yes. But give the kid a chance to develop without forcing upon him all those typical City fan pipedreams of young players coming through to make the club 'the best in the land and all the world'. Not comfortable with a chequebook team maybe?
Top teams do not bring on young talent by exposing developing players to the dog-eat-dog world of Premiership football. I don't think any of you muppets realise the difference in pace, power and nous between first team and reserve football. They are WORLDS apart. Weiss is good. But he needs short bursts at the end of games already won so he can perform without pressure.
Sure as eggs is eggs, the fans calling for his name in the starting line-up would be the first on his back when his performance does not match THEIR expectations. It's funny how people come on here slamming Hughes when they clearly do not have a clue about the game.

A couple of points -
(1) - what a terrible nickname;
(2) - Berbatov! - how you wish you rags had not wasted that money and could afford Tevez

As for Besiktas, nice win for them. But "Besiktas doubled their CL goal tally last night LOL" How many had they scored before?
