The arrival of Hull at the City of Manchester Stadium on Saturday offers an excellent opportunity to avoid a club record seventh consecutive draw, and the fans are hungry to see City turn on the style.
First team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki wants his charges to begin an important week on the front foot, by pulling the Tigers' tail, but believes they need to sort out the defensive side of their game in order to do so.
The visit of Phil Brown's side is swiftly followed by the Carling Cup quarter-final clash with Arsene Wenger's young Arsenal team, and then the yardstick Eastlands clash with Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Although they have not quite matched Tottenham's nine-goal feat against Wigan, scoring goals has not been a real problem for the Blues, with five in the last two games.
But leaking them at the same rate has caused City to slip out of the top four places, and handed the initiative in the league table to Harry Redknapp's Tottenham.
The mantra repeated by manager Mark Hughes and his staff has been that it will take time to gel, especially for the back four.
And Niedzwiecki added that a succession of niggling injuries has seriously affected that process, with the first-choice defensive quartet of Pablo Zabaleta, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott and Wayne Bridge actually only managing two full sets of 90 minutes twice this season.
"We possibly have a Tottenham-type performance within us, but firstly we are looking for consistency," said the former Chelsea goalkeeper.
"You have to remember we are a new team gelling together. Against Burnley it was only the second time that back four had played together over 90 minutes.
"We keep being disrupted. It happened again on Saturday, with Kolo coming off with an injury and Nedum coming on for his first game of the season.
"Little things like that don't help, and it takes a little bit of time to get it working. You look at Chelsea, who have only conceded one goal in seven league games at home - they have a very settled back four in place.
Growing
"Fulham are another ideal team to look at from last season. They had a settled back four as well, and were very successful with it.
"Getting everyone together and gelling is important. It's a team game, and we are learning and growing together, and I can assure the supporters that we are as frustrated as them about being in winning positions and not being able to see the game out."
That failure to secure victories after having been in the lead against Liverpool, Burnley and Fulham has been occupying the thoughts of the management and coaching staff all week.
And the need to intensify focus after going ahead was a big theme when a team meeting was held after training yesterday.
Niedzwiecki said that the lessons from the Burnley game have to be learned, and that a home game against Hull was a perfect starting point to prove that they have.
"Any game in the Premier League is a big one, but we need to get back to winning ways," he said.
"We are frustrated at the moment because of the run of draws, and the fact we have been in leading positions in some of those games.
Errors
"We have also played some really good stuff at times in those games, but individual errors - the little details we keep talking about - have cost us.
"We got bitten again at Anfield, but it's something we will keep working on. What is needed is that extra little bit of focus that is needed when we have scored a goal."
Hughes will be at the KC Stadium tonight to watch Hull take on Everton, but Niedzwiecki says it is up to the Blues to take a grip on the game on Saturday.
"We will be watching Hull tonight, but it's a home game so the initiative is on us," he said. "It's a game in which we will be firing on all cylinders and going out to win.
"It's the start of a big week, with some massive games coming up.
"We have waited for so long at this club for a trophy, but it's also important to keep kicking along at the top of the league.
"Tottenham's result on Sunday is worth another point at least to them, with those nine goals, so we can't let the gap get too big.
"We need to keep it nice and tight and see where it takes us in the new year."

Our problem hasn't been creating and scoring goals - it's been conceding - so why would we open ourselves up even more?! The first half at Liverpool was the perfect springboard - it will have given the defenders confidence that they can be organised and solid. Yes, we might not have created much but if you can't see that our problem has been conceding goals then there's something seriously wrong?!
AlexC83, Manchester (25/11/2009 at 09:19)
P.S. If we were really scared of taking the lead then how the hell did we manage to score a second against Liverpool when they only had one at the time?! We went for the result then didn't we?!
It's about time that some city fans started being patient in individual games. Our fans say we're patient and have loyally waited years for success - start practising what you preach...

I think MH should drop SWP for a while, not been his best start to the season.

your memory must be going mate, under Stuart Pearce we really played some dire stuff! The final straw for me was when we played the rags and failed to have a go, and Baconface came on TV afterwards and had a little chuckle about it!
That for me was the final nail in Pearce's coffin, he'd obviously lost all confidence in our team to attack without getting caught on the break, hence only scoring once was it at home in the final six months of his tenure? - I think my memory is going too! (probably a good thing!) I'm sure someone will correct me with the facts - don't think Hughes has that problem, I think he's trying to support the defence through playing extra defensive minded midfielders, which seems to have the same dull effect.
At least our defence will get better in time, poor Pearce had no resources to sort out his mess, and lost the plot in my opinion.
Anyhow, come on City, time to be bold!

Whenever I watch the blues I think the problem is with our shape across the park, particularly in defence. We just don`t have any formation in our back four, and always seem to be out of position, this is something we need to work on.
When you are out of position as a forward, you just lose the chance to score a goal, but when you are out of position as a defender you more often than not lose a goal, pretty critical really.
So, in my opinion, it`s the coaching elements that need improving, not the players. CTID

It's not just about the defence. Defending starts in the oppossing third, therefore one could argue that Gareth Barry and Stephen Ireland had earlier chances to clear. Probably about right too given the errors Barry has made of late usually ending up in a goal. I still think we need to be more aggressive in our play and retain the ball better, that breeds confidence then we can go kill teams off. Looking foreward to the plethora of games this coming week - can't wait.

Says it all that. An ex goalkeeper( a cr*p one at that) first team coach??? Ex-Chelsea?? Yeah, when they were rubbish and in div 2.
Anyone who knows their football will realise that these 'coaches' are not up to the task. When the Tafia were all at blackburn Hitchcock was first team coach and..Niedswe..Needzwacki.. Eddy was gk coach,so why the role reversal?
Hughes employing his wife and son at the club stinks.. reminds me of the MPs and their expenses scandal.

Agree with your sentiments. We have loads of players on the books now so in my opinion the best way to start building a stable first 11 is to only play defenders in defence, midfielders in midfield, and strikers in attack.
If we only play with one or two strikers and the rest have to sit on the bench rather than taking a midfield berth then so be it.
Forget bulging pay packets, star names and huge transfer fees. To quote George Formby -
It serves you right, you shouldn't have joined, it jolly well serves you right.
It serves you right, you shouldn't have joined, you might have been sitting tight
You might have been in Civvy Street instead of in the fight
But it serves you right, you shouldn't have joined, it jolly well serves you right
And it's no use kicking up a row because your nobody's sweetheart now.
You can weep and sigh and pipe your eye but still you’re in the fight
It serves you right, you shouldn't have joined, it jolly well serves you right.

Could someone please explain to me exactly what success Hughes'gaggle of coaches have achieved? Why haven't we got the best coaches available?
Why is our organisation at set-pieces so woeful? Why can't we defend a lead against poor opposition? Who tells Given to pump long balls in the vague direction of our lone striker,a striker who has never played long ball football in his life?
Dukinfield Blue, Manchester (25/11/2009 at 12:13)
The quote above from the assistant weasal tells me exactly why we are going nowhere fast. Its all about being set up not to lose rather than being set up to give somebody a good hiding. Why oh why are the owners allowing this to continue?, with Liverpools exit from the Champions league this will strengthen their resolve to finish top 4 and you know with a consistantly top 4 club they will not continue with this form indefinately wheras you cannot see where we are heading with our form. Whats our ambition?, it should be top 4 for many reasons - the investment - The ambition - The fans - the glory. Well I give up trying to second guess why our owners, who are reputed to be 100% ruthless winners, seem to be allowing the spinless weasal to continue destroying our club. Maybe after the predicted debacle of our next 3 fixtures will hopefully change that perception.

No they haven't.....their back four has been chopped and changed quite often this season.

The square ball, the 40 yard backpass to the goalkeeper, the big welly up the field, all are usually employed by the genius that is Mark Hughes and his band of not so merry welshmen!

As for replacements, Hiddink, Mourinho, Jol, Hitzfeld, Rijkaard, O'Neil or even Baconface if he delivered some quality football with a bit of steel. I just think that by keeping Hughes is only prolonging the inevitable agony of further failure
