And the Blues got the reward for their solidarity when the Irish keeper - perhaps cheated out of his last chance of playing in a World Cup finals by Thierry Henry's infamous handball - produced a stunning save to help his team to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.
Striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who later scored an equaliser to end his own scoring drought, revealed how a distraught Given received warmth and sympathy from his team-mates when he arrived back at the club.
Given had seen his hopes of a trip to South Africa next summer evaporate in Paris on Wednesday night, but was back at City's Carrington training base the following day.
And Adebayor was one of the first to try to perk up his spirits with an embrace and kind words.
The big Togolese striker's own World Cup hopes were ended by defeat in Cameroon last month, and he was quick to empathise:
"When I saw Shay in the dressing room on Thursday I went and gave him a cool hug and told him how we felt," he said.
"All the players - Craig Bellamy, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Kolo Toure - were all telling him that, and it was nice to hear. We knew in his head it was going to be difficult, and we knew he needed us so he could be 100 per cent for the game.
"We are family, and help each other to achieve things."
Remarkable
And when Given bounced back with his remarkable reflex save to keep out Martin Skrtel's header, and then put in a typically accomplished display, it came as not surprise, said Adebayor.
"We all know how good Shay is, how professional he is," he said. "It was typical of him, because he had that difficult moment last week and came back to show how good he is."
Adebayor also revealed that City's unity stems from a players' meeting at the start of the season, aimed at forging team spirit out of the summer imports and the remains of last season's squad. At the start of the season we told each other that we will fight for each other, in good moments and bad moments, and that is what we did with Shay," said Adebayor.
"We showed him we love him, and that even in his bad moments we will still support him. We are all together."
The draw keeps City neatly placed in sixth, on the shoulder of Spurs and Villa, and ahead of Liverpool.
Streak
And Adebayor feels there are maybe six teams chasing the four Champions league places:
"I think it's between Liverpool, City, United, Arsenal and Chelsea, plus Villa," he said. "It will be tough until the end of the season."
The stalemate took City's run of draws to six on the bounce, the longest sequence for 96 years, but Adebayor says that some draws are better than others, and that a point at Anfield is a positive - even if the Blues did take the lead through Stevie Ireland with 15 minutes left.
"We were losing 2-0 at home to Burnley before we came back to 3-2 and drew in the end," he said. "And the draw at Villa was a good draw. We were supposed to beat Burnley, but that's football.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with our consistency. We just have to keep focussed, keep doing what we love doing best and hopefully on Saturday we'll get back our winning streak.
"Not everyone will lead 2-1 at Anfield, and we just have to believe that we can do it, and that we can finish in the top four.
"The boss believes that, and the players believe it, so there is no reason we can't achieve our dreams."

Everyone goes on about him not jumping for headers when the ball is hoofed up to him. For what?? Who does he nod it on to when hes on his tod. If balls are coming out of the sky with snow on if he cant control it with his back to goal and get the ball down, hes better off giving up on the header and trying to win the second ball. With his back to goal he is the best forward player Ive seen at City for decades, lets use that strength.
Its not like when Quinny was playing up with David White, hoof, nod on and let Whitey the whippet run towards goal. Look how Quinny played after Whites career fell to pieces when he had noone to hoof the hoofs onto!
If we want to hoof it up for Adebayor to win headers then the only one who has the pace to profit from that is Bellamy. So dont have him play left mid!
Tis easy this game isnt it....

Interesting that Ade doesn't include Spuds in the race for Champions League places. So far this season they've been pretty impressive, and let's not forget that they have spent more than City on players over the last four transfer windows, so should be bidding for a top-four place.

I think this article shows that there is a good spirit within the squad - couple that with the fact that we have gone behind on several occasions without letting the heads drop and with only one defeat which was that dubious last minute goal.
As usual you are talking rubbish - give it a rest please.

I agree with the idea of technology in theory, but with Footballers being the whining sods that they are the game would be as slow and broken up as American Football with lots of stoppages in the games and every single decision being contested.
Perhaps they could bring in a system like tennis where by a certain amount of challenges could be made for things like Handballs, (did the ball cross) the Goal-line, penalty decisions (only the defending team should be allowed to do this to avoid a pointless stoppage of play).
I would say that Offside decisions should be omitted completely and that an attacking team cannot challenge to receive a penalty.

Apparently another new tactic being employed by PR is to infiltrate fans forums abusing dissenters.
Surely not ?

All the FA/FIFA people need to do is watch a few games of Rugby League where they have a video ref (matches without Sky coverage get an extra pair of touch judges, like in the Europa League at the moment) to see how it can have a positive effect on a match. It adds to the excitement and the time spent making a decision would normally be wasted anyway with a goal celebration/arguing with the ref.
All dubious penalty calls and goals should be assessed by video replay if the ref on the pitch feels he can make a 100% decision himself. Or maybe each manager could be allowed 2 "challenges" per match. If he's correct then they keep the 2 challenges - and if he's wrong then he loses one challenge (like in Tennis and NFL, which also works and has an overall positive effect).
It's an easy solution really and I genuinely think it'd work wonders for football - the only problem is that Blatter, Platini et al seem to think it would cause problems in the game - which is crazy given that we're still debating Henry's handball 5 days after the event!

I agree
On saturday esp. in the first half we just hoof the ball up sometime down the left, then the right, then down the middle. It has to get really flustrating when you haven't got any support and have to keep running one way then the other for no real reason.
At the Gooners the long ball up isn't played so he has time to get back into position because the ball is played through midfield.
As for there goal the guy niped in front of him, which happens its not great but it happens he willlearn form it.
