CITY Academy starlet Freddy Veseli captained Switzerland to a shock 1-0 victory in the Under-17s World Cup final on Sunday.
The unfancied Swiss were given little chance before kick-off against hosts and defending champions Nigeria, who had the backing of a fiercely partisan 60,000 sell-out crowd in Abuja.
However, Haris Seferovic's 63rd-minute header and a stalwart defensive effort marshalled by 16-year-old centreback Veseli was enough to deny Nigeria, who have won the title on three previous occasions.
City's delighted International Academy Director Jim Cassell told mcfc.co.uk: 'Frederick is an exceptionally talented defender renowned for his ability on the ball. He can also play in a number of positions and could eventually develop into a central midfield player.'
Taking part in the competition for the first time, Veseli's side had previously seen off Brazil, Mexico, Germany and Italy on their way to the final.

"a stalwart defensive effort marshalled by...."
It has been a while...WELL DONE YOUNG FREDERICK!!
I just hope you do not end up sitting on your arse like young Weiss looking at the back of Hughes head.
Well done to the lad.
Freddy Veseli - who...........! got to admit, never heard of this lad, but if good enough we may have another gem coming through, 16 and capt of is country respect,,
Is he available this Saturday ?
Good luck to him he'll need while MH is in charge, as his record of blooding new young talent is virtually non-existant up to now, unless he's paid £10m plus for them!
I watched the whole game live on Nigerian tele. It was like the Alamo, Switzerland burgled the result all right but the lad was outstanding. A junior John Terry, putting his body on the line, perfectly timed tackles, composure, the lot, a real 5 star performance. Its along way from U-17’s to the Premier League but at sixteen playing full sized Nigerians he is a terrific prospect.
On a different thread, first off congratulations to the All Whites, it’s a lot easier that route now the Aussies are in the Asian qualifiers. I think they can both look forward to some more finals.
Secondly the great news is that the African big five have all qualified, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire and Egypt (after the play off). These teams are liberally sprinkled with Champion League players and are going to take some big scalps you watch. I was worried about some of the crowd sizes but this lot will all have tens of thousands watching them. You are going to see support and passion Africa style. I went to Ghana, Sierra Leone qualifier once, my ears didn’t stop ringing for a week.
The organisers will be over the moon with the turn of events. All they need now is for Portugal and Greece to come through for their huge local immigrant populations and maybe France for the other Francophone countries and they will have the perfect 32.
This is shaping up to the best World Cup ever. All we need is Rooney (come on we like him in a white shirt) Gerrard, Terry to go to the party uninjured and fresh, oh and a bit of luck.
Bring it on, can’t wait.
"Paul Dickov..."
You DID know it was a U-17 Tournament, right?! Respeck!
Ive watched him and he seems and excellent prospect, he should look to press next year good luck freddy!
Judging by the Academy results this season we could do with his presence for the U18's.
Well done, Freddy. Keep up your skill and leadership, lad. Perhaps even MH might notice...
A big congratulations to Freddy, but is there any worried about the form of our academy teams, I hope it is only a blip but they seem to be struggling this year.
He and his team mates must have shown great composure and control over nerves to get this result in Abuja. Let us all hope that Freddie continues to make progress through the City ranks. When back in the UK, I always try and take in a game at Platt Lane and I will be watching out for Freddie this coming Christmas holiday. Have any posters on here seen Freddie play?
Congratulations young Freedy & congratulations Mr Cassell, Keep them coming Sir Jim !.

Hi SF. Watched the game on Sunday night. I don't have to tell you that Switzerland is very proud of their youngsters. The SFV, is really doing well with their standards of football and football training with youngsters.
I've waited until now , there's been so much crap on this site about Robbie this and that and other things this last week.
Perhaps this thread is the right one to say a Massive thanks to the New York branch of the City supporters. They made me feel very welcome at the Burnley game. Although we didn't get the three points in the end, I walked out of the place with an honorary NYC supporters club t-shirt and it is really something to be proud of. I will definitely be showing it off at the Liverpool game this saturday.
That t-shirt is going to become a must have ! without a doubt.
Too many fans to count, A big thanks to NYC 9 lad for the welcome and tshirt. He tells me there are over 100 fans there and the pub is usually packed out. That's great ! I didn't count them all, but there was some great banter and you can imagine some of the words that were said as City went 0-2 down !
Still a great day out capped by one of the most perfect performances by Bruce at Madison Square Garden in the evening. The place rocked and shaked till the end !
Well done Frederic, a great personal and team performance.
Let's hope MH takes note. If he can play an injured RSC in midfield he can certainly let a world champion have a go there too !
Allegedly. Barca are preparing a bid of £50m for Freddie or we can have Lionel in exchange!.
Excellent! Well done to Freddy and the rest of the team. Some achievemnet when playing the Nigerians on their own soil.
Now if he played for Arsenal he would be a world beater in the media's eyes.Oh, I' m sorry he is.
Watched all of Switzerland's games up until the final but missed the final itself. They were the best side to come out of UEFA at this age group and were a class above the others.
This lad has promise and its a great advert for our academy that we have the captain of a World Cup winning side.
The bad news however is that with Hughes' record of bringing through youth players and his refusal to give opportunities to the likes of Weiss, Johnson and Ned etc simply because he will live and die by his overpriced signings (when several have been utterly awful and practically begging to be dropped), young Freddy Vaseli will never make his debut in a senior City side while Mark Hughes is manager.
David Evans, Zuerich
it was a pleasure having you at the Mad Hatters, our own City pub in NYC...All getting excited about the Liverpool game...will look out for you! And keep your posts coming
As to the Swiss U 17: truly great tournament they played. Beat the likes of Brazil, Italy and Germany on their way to the final. So it can't really be a fluke. Nor can Freddy Veseli be...but I guess our MH will prefer lining up the players he bought , such as Lescott and Santa Cruz. But hang on, by the time Veseli is 19 he will probably be playing elsewhere anyway, shipped out by MH...
