City started the campaign in fine form, winning their opening four games, including that one against the Gunners, and challenging for the Premier League leadership.
However, a run of five successive draws coincided with Emmanuel Adebayor's return from a three-match ban for his attack on Robin van Persie.
Although the £25million Togo striker has since returned from suspension, and a subsequent hip injury, he has not found the form that saw him score in that quartet of early victories.
And with City's defence struggling as Joleon Lescott tries to cement a centre-half partnership with skipper Kolo Toure and gaps appear in both full-back areas, so wins have been harder to come by.
"There was a buzz about the place when we played Arsenal. Everybody's expectations were high but we got disjointed a little bit," Cook told The National.
"We lost Adebayor for a little bit and then international games broke our momentum up.
Result
"Since then we have had a couple of games where we thought we could have probably come away with a better result but that is the way it works."
City have another big game against Arsenal looming, on December 2, when a place in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup will be at stake.
Before that the Blues must visit Liverpool on November 21, before taking on Hull a week later, a match remembered last season for Phil Brown's controversial half-time on-pitch team-talk.
City fans will expect a win in the latter game and, given the poor form of Rafael Benitez's side, who will also be slightly distracted by their Champions League encounter with Debrecen the following week, at least a draw at Anfield.
If they can cement that last four berth as well to maintain hopes of an appearance at Wembley on February 28, it would still represent a pretty positive start to a season of so much promise following the £120million summer investment.
"Overall, we are quite pleased with our progress," said Cook.
"If someone had said at the beginning of the season we would be fourth after 10 Premier League games and in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup, we would have taken it.
"We have gone through many years at this football club where survival has been the order of the day. Today it is about success."
Rumours
Today also appears to be about Robinho.
The Brazilian is due to link up with his international team-mates later today in Qatar after spending the last two days with City.
He will have his ankle assessed, with the likelihood that he will then return to Abu Dhabi for the remainder of City's stopover.
Despite all the speculation about his future, rumours of discontent and a possible January move to Barcelona, Mark Hughes said yesterday the South American was going nowhere.
It is a stance Cook is happy to endorse.
"One of the things we always say to Robinho is that there seems to be a lot of people claiming to represent him," he said.
"But we only speak to his father, who Robinho himself says is his only representative. His father is not here, so we assume everyone else is up to their tricks.
"Categorically, there is nothing on anyone's agenda, whether it is the chairman's, mine, or Mark's."

Like all long suffering blues - (my first match was in 1953 as a ten year old) - I would not want short term success at the expense of a sustainable place at the top table of world football
However, Cook, Hughes and co should be warned
Our owner has not invested in us to merely be the top team in England and we don't know how long he will remain interested, particularly in the light of recent struggles with Fulham, Brum, Burnley
His reasoning in investing in us, is to see City as a major world force putting the likes of Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Barca, Juve, Real etc IN OUR REAR VIEW MIRROR - That's what will get his juices going
Given that the level of investment to date by our owner and the level of potential future investment by him, at one go, has been far in excess of anything to date ever seen in the UK, we look a million miles off even competing for fifth spot in the PL, never mind winning it - we don't seem to have an influencer on the pitch - there is no balance - tactics seem haywire - players don't look happy - we cant attract the best European talent -
Even Blackburn with their sugar daddy, Jack Walker, hit the heights instantly and that was peanuts by comparison with what MH has spent
I believe that Cook and Hughes should be worried that whilst the fans have lived up to expectations and responded magnificently to our owners' investment, the time it is taking to make an impact in the PL in spite of the open cheque book and lack of interference in signings, does not bode well for how long it will take us to take the world by storm
I don't think the good Sheik expects to wait a decade for that to happen - He could just get bored and withdraw his money
To put it another way, is every visitor to this site, on the basis of choice of transfer targets, formulation of teams, the form of players, tactics, etc convinced that the Mark Hughes, Gary Cook combination is going to get us to the pinnacle of world football
If they are not, why wait to make the change
THIS IS OUR BIG CHANCE - LETS NOT BLOW IT
It doesn't matter to MH GC etc. They will get big fat pay offs and get another job if they are turfed out of MCFC due to failure
But us, the long suffering fans, see a once in a lifetime chance to compete with the very best - The chance wont come again
Come on Sparky get your act together - you know IT IS SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH AT THE MOMENT
The patience of City fans posting on here has been commendable since our world changed

i posted a comment yesterday on another thread about Robbi and his purpose at our club. You tell me another team who has a slightly built Brazilian attacker who is expected to defend. If City wanted a Brazillian defender then they would have bought Juan or Lucio, we didnt, we wanted a Brazilian attacker who in some matches will be unstoppable and in other may only show a few glimpses of what he was bought for. Ferguson didnt expect Ronaldo to defend and 9 times out of 10 he didnt.
I wish fans like yourself would get off Robbi's back, christ, what an improvement he is and whilst i like Tevez for his 110% effort he still has to prove to me that he should be in the team before Robbi.
Credit should be goven but apparantly isnt to Robbi who scored his fair share of goals last year, his first in England, new country, different weather and entirely different style of football. If you are a true City fan then you will support whoever wears the shirt whether that be Robbi, Samaras, Corradi etc...

James. I write in peace and would like you to explain the somewhat baffling significance of empty seats. I am a simple being and i still fail to understand it? Have i missed something?? Does it get you extra points if your seats are full?? Maybe it adds on extra minutes if you're losing, maybe?? Maybe it makes you feel taller or prettier or . . . i dont know. Please, please explain??????

Dear Rag, Please stick to the united pages within the MEN website. To be honest, your comments are juvenile to say the least and a tad tedious. Why would you want to comment on a club other than your own? Christ, I would not dream on going onto the united pages on the site, the day to day comings and goings of any other club would not and do not interest me.
Is this all your life amounts to - leaving wind up comments on the City pages of MEN? I assume you'll be dropping stones on passing cars from the motorway flyover later on and playing knock down ginger with the other juveniles from the estate?
Grow up, jog on.

Mr knee slide. Come on now. You can't have the arrogant poster campaign 'This is our City' claim to all on sundrae that OT is full of day trippers from the Silly Isles and then defend the fact that despite selling tickets for a quid after spending £200M on the fan bait that a 2 thirds full stadium is anything but confirmation that you are a small town club out of your depth.

My issue is this; why is he SO good for Brazil and yet anonymous for us? It has nothing to do with the players he's lining up with and all to do with desire.
I'd love to see a motivated Robinho stay at City and yet his body language shouts the opposite.
It's not a slur on City as he did exactly the same at the worlds' biggest club, over in Madrid, and it begs the question, what exactly does he want?

Second their English has not improved and it seems they get troubles with their neighbours
because they are playing Brazilian musique. Third Hughes has ousted all the Brazilians
like Elano,Jo,Berti and now it is Robinho's turn.
Feel very sorry for Robinho but hope he is aware that he is not beloved by the football fans in Spain
nor in Catalunia (he is ex-Real afterall)because they have fear he will spoil the dressing room.
Loves parties just like Ronaldinho,Adriano .

If your attitude is symptomatic of the majority of City's followers then no wonder there are so many empty seats if you only want to attract mancunians.
