CITY assistant boss Mark Bowen has called for patience as Roque Santa Cruz finds his feet again at Premier League level.
The Paraguayan had enough class to score his first City goal, and pick up the man of the match award, against Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup last week, but he was clearly struggling at Birmingham on Sunday.
Bowen believes that Sunday's performance was a delayed reaction to making his first start in a game for eight months.
"He did ever so well in the Carling Cup game and got man of the match," said Mark Hughes' right-hand man.
"But football is always the same. Just when you think you have come through it and are 100 per cent, the weekend reminded us that this was his first league start in maybe five or six months of football.
"Plus he took a blow to his ankle which blew up like a balloon. He wanted to play on, but we could see the knock was holding him back.
"He will come on, and the more football he plays and the more training he gets, the more you will see the player we know that he is."
Santa Cruz was not alone in disappointing at St Andrew's, with nobody except Shay Given covering themselves in glory in a 0-0 draw.
City's management and players have since held an inquest into the reasons why the standard dipped against Birmingham, and have now written it off as a bad day at the office.
"We talked about it afterwards, and you look at tactics and other things, but maybe it was just one of those occasions when you have too many players not playing to 100 per cent of their capabilities," said Bowen.
"It's an old cliché in football, but if you have two or three not quite up to it, maybe the rest can carry them, but when you have five or six not quite at it on the day it affects you.
"When you look at that, and the fact Shay kept us in the game, it was a point gained in the end.
"A lot has been made of the fact that we have had four draws in a row but we look at it that three of those draws were away from home, and two were against sides that have beaten Chelsea.
"So we are not doing too badly. We are where we wanted to be at this stage of the season, in that top four with a game in hand, and everyone is positive and looking forward to the months ahead."
Do you think Santa Cruz will come good? Have your say.

I don't know what it must do for some of our up and coming youth products like Ball and Weiss when they see the like's of RSC labouring away against Brum instead of them ? Why do I get the feeling he could turn out to be our next Robbie Fowler?

Brilliant! that restores our faith in the management completely! How about the manager/tactician who`s supposed to be in charge, identifies the problem for himself and tells his over paid under performing players exactly where they went wrong and tells them exactly what he expects of them for the next game or they will be dropped. Maybe a motivational talk with the aid of a few rockets that are freely available this time of year at any news agents. Or perhaps he hasn`t worked out what went wrong himself? Because unless I`m very much mistaken we`ve "dipped standards" in the last 5 league games (that equates to a full bad working week at the office in my reckoning).Well thank the lord we`ve finally got that sorted, I look forward to stuffing Burnley 5-0 this weekend with our full squad/think tank of tactical geniuses.

Oh,and the manager might lose his job as well.
I have to say (and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone here)that on the evidence so far this season against Premiership quality,RSC looks to me like a player who due to a career blighted by serious injury has no chance of ever recapturing the form he displayed
during that one fantastic season under Hughes at Ewood Park.
I seriously hope I'm proved wrong.

Why are some City fans so stubborn? Blame everything on the usual scapegoats and refuse to lay any blame at the door of the favourites even when they've played awful.
RSC was less responsible than most for the poor result against Birmingham. Our two central midfielders didn't impose themselves on the game at all and Craig Bellamy is far too one-dimensional to play effectively on the left wing on a consistent basis. We also should have had a nailed on penalty in the closing stages, but who gets blamed? The lad we've just bought because nearly every other scapegoat has left the club by now. For Pete's sake - two years ago this entire site was up in arms that we hadn't bought him when he was banging them in for Blackburn.

Does anyone know if we paid all up front for RSC I just dont see how the City board could sanction such a move if we did, who's doing the medicals down at Carrington these days Stevie Wonder??
Talking of injuries does anyone know how Ned's doing we could do with him back in our defence asap, either at right back or centre half?

This is because the muscle groups unique to controlling a football need time to get back to full strength, so even if your brain knows what you want to acheive, those treacherous muscles let you down big time, so you need plenty of good match practice - gym work etc just isn't the same.
So please for God's sake can we give players like RSC a few months to prove themselves at least, we all know what he did when playing against us for Blackburn, he looks like he's got plenty more to come for us in my opinion.
If you think he'll never get back to his previous fitness and ability doe to the seriousness of his injuries, then fair enough, but I think we need to trust the club's medical advice/ staff first of all - they seem to have done a fair enough job with Valeri Bojinov, who is coming good out on loan.
Just because a player appears on the pitch doesn't mean he is capable of producing 100% of his potential, if you go through our squad it's worrying how many of them have had serious injuries in the last few months, they all need match practice to get back to their best, it's unreasonable to expect them all to hit the ground running.
I expect us to really start getting good results after Xmas, when new signings from the summer start to bed in / gain match fitness, and other lesser squads start to struggle.
Patience Grasshoppers, the project is well on it's way!

Bunch of clueless ex pro's who never achieved sod all in their playing days, Hughes aside. I hear we're increasing the seating capacity on our bench.. we are going to use the whole of the lower tier of the Colin Bell stand!
