The Blues keeper almost single-handedly earned his side a point at Birmingham on Sunday, in what was their fourth stalemate on the bounce.
But now the bargain £6m buy has called time on the Blues dropping points in games which they need to win if they are to present a serious challenge at the top of the table.
City threw away a two-goal lead against Fulham last week, and then struggled against cock-a-hoop Birmingham, where they were fortunate to escape with a point.
And the Irish goalkeeper insists that the Blues now have to step up their game to ensure that at the end of the season they are not struck down by an attack of the if-onlys.
"At the end of the season we don't want to be looking back at games like this, saying if we had only got two more points we would have been wherever," said Given, hesitating to mention the target of a top four finish.
"We are delighted we didn't lose, and gained a point at Birmingham, but we have to be looking to win games like that.
"We have played three of the last four away from home and got draws, and people say you will do OK if you draw your away games and win all of your home games.
"But we drew at home to Fulham as well, and we are disappointed we haven't turned a couple of them into wins.
Disappointed
"Hopefully, we can get back to winning ways at home to Burnley next week. One or two of the big teams have dropped points and lost a lot more than us - we have only lost once this season.
Given view
"But we do need to turn one or two more of these draws into victories.
"Before the game we went to win it, and so we were disappointed not to have done that.
"But you have to give Birmingham some credit. They won last week, their tails were up and they gave us a tough game.
"We have to be doing better ourselves. We have to be looking at going to places like Birmingham and winning, so it's disappointing we didn't."
One plus from the St Andrews draw was that it gave Given, and his under-fire defence, their first clean sheet since the 1-0 win at Portsmouth in August.
Whilst Given was the main reason for that, his capable hands rescuing situations which were sometimes created by sloppy defending, he stresses the psychological bonus of a shut-out.
"It's important, not just for myself and the defenders, but for the team as a unit," he said.
"It had been eight games since we kept a clean sheet, and it's nice to get back to that.
"We have always said that if we keep a clean sheet we have the players with the ability at the other end to score.
"It didn't work at Birmingham, but if you can build from the back, keep it nice and tight, you always have a chance.
"We go onto the pitch expecting to win every time, which is a good thing. But it just didn't click at Birmingham, and we were disappointed with the way we played going forward."
Saturday's visitors Burnley have the worst away record in the Premier League, having lost all five, scoring twice and conceding 17.
But Given has warned his teammates that a side which counts United, Sunderland and Everton among its Turf Moor scalps can change that around at any time.
"We can't take Burnley lightly," he said.
"I know it's an old cliché but there are no easy games in the Premier League."
Will City beat Burnley? Have your say.

p.s. Had to give a wry smile today when I read a text on Teletext from some Utd fan who claims that Van de Sar, Foster and the other guy, whose name I can never remember, are all ten times better than Shay Given. He also boasted that Utd will put 3 past Chelsea on Sunday, saying Chelsea are over-rated. Ten times better? ! Do me a favour!

On paper, we should beat Burnley and get a few in the net in the process, but after Sunday's performance? Definitely, Birmingham made everyone work hard and gave us little space, but there should have been more creativity and occasionally we could have cleared the ball without hoofing it up into nowhere - we missed Toure and Barry was nowhere near his usual competent self. Tevez , Bellamy and SWP worked hard - but no height there, some rubbish crosses and they had chances if they'd just got the final ball right. Frustrating again.
But another game and still hoping for another victory - fourth in the Prem is not bad to be going on with.

However, we have to take heed that we cannot afford to keep dropping points against teams that frankly are only looking for premier league survival. We have to get the mentality that Chelsea have, they went to Bolton and stuffed them 4-0, no issues, no excuses.sadly Hughes seems to set us up to not get beat rather than to win and in all honesty is not the way forward. Hughes needs to get the message before he gets the sack.

City Wives are genarally an understanding lot though, and I reckon that it comes from many years watching their spouses suffer the agonies of supporting the Great Unpredictables.
I'm happy to report, Fellow Blues, that I've been given a no-strings attached pass-out to Eastlands for the evening. I'm taking the missus to lunch instead, and I'll be quietly celebrating later-on with a pint of Holts.
Panic over.

Given
Zabaletta Toure Lescott Sylvinho -
Bellamy Dejong (holding role) Barry (more attacking role) Petrov
Ireland Adebayor
Raziola - I thionk we need to change it round slightly but i would rest De-jong / Barry they have been playing ok but i don't think we need the two defensive midfielders I would put Ireland back in midfield I would consider resting SWP or Tevez also to bring in Petrov.
Shay is right, our season will be defined by the results against this sort of team not the top 4, Utd and Chelsea are up there every season because you just can not see anyone in the bottom half taking a point off them. We need to start beating them week in week out

Yes my friend, I do agree (almost) entirely with your team selection. If Robinho were fit, I would play him in that role that you have earmarked for superman and, to be honest having not seen Sylvinho play yet, I would be inclined to stick with Bridge but SWP and Tevez would be no worse off for a rest. Even to bring them on for a different dimension for the last 20 minutes or so would work for me.

Bill so long as you give her the match balls after the game. I'm sure there will be no problem.
Well done and Congratulations to both of you for your 20th on Wednesday the 2nd.
Don't forget to give us all a wave.

have you considered taking her to the match and sharing a balti pie? You could use the same fork for added romance.
