Manchester City

Ireland is City's prize guy

Stephen Ireland receives the award from MEN Sport editor Peter Spencer
STEVIE Ireland broke United's monopoly on Greater Manchester's Player of the Year award - but is determined not to let last season's stellar form slip.

The Blues' midfielder was the pick of the bunch when MEN Sport readers - from the paper and this website - and Channel M viewers voted for the top man from our nine league clubs, in the contest organised in association with flybe.com.

And that ended United's dominance, with Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo having won it for the previous three seasons of the trophy's existence.

Ireland said: "At the start of last season my only aim was to get into the team, so to finish the season with an award like this is amazing for me.

"It's a proper honour, especially when you see the calibre of the players who have won it for the last three years. I take these things really seriously, but it only shows that I had a good season last year, and now I am entirely focused on this season. It would be nice to stand here receiving such an honour at the end of this season as well!

"The team has gone from strength to strength. We are winning away from home as well, and scoring goals from set-pieces which we didn't really do last season."

One of our readers, Jonathan Smith from Sunnyside Drive in Ashton under Lyne, wins a pair of tickets to any flybe destination after his assessment of Ireland was deemed the most fitting by our judges.

"Stevie is the most improved player in the Premier League, scoring 13 goals" wrote Jonathan.

"The fans love his consistency, providing service of real quality, and his wonderful skills that have made him a truly outstanding candidate for this Player of the Year award."

What do you make of Ireland's form so far this season? Have your say.

Tut Tut Tut, i see the red boy`s are twitchy early today, do i see frustration as the early cracks begin to appear ? i think the dominance is beginning to crumble as we begin our slow steady rise, as they say ONWARDS & UPWARDS BLUE BOY`S !!! CFL BELEIVE.

A Manc and Blue.
So typical. Instead of celebrating you have to denigrate a football legend. Stephen Ireland had a great season and deserves his award so just be happy for him. I am.

United 18, "this guy is not fit to lace Paul Scholes boots":

That's just YOUR opinion. The voters of Manchester obviously disagree.

At last, a trophy for the Council House!
Tick tock, tick tock, keep on dreaming Berties. The alarm's going to go off eventually and you'll wake up to the reality of still being inferior to the team the world knows as "Manchester".

The reason that Ryan Giggs didn't win it. was because more city fans log-on to this site, and read the evening news. which isn't available in london. so city fans voted for him. and all the other utd fans on here. were more interested in trying to get on this site, rather than their own.and didn't realise they could vote for their players. because they are so worried about what's going on in the Blue half of the City... lol...

Fully deserved. As for not lacing Scholes' boots, that'll be why old rasher-chops was after him this summer I take it...

Scholesy probably does need someone to lace his boots for him these days.

I see a blue moon risin,
I see Utd on the wane...

Well done Stevie!

If you had read the news, Ireland as got over his virus so he is now fit to lace Scholes boots but he wouldn't do it because he would probably pick up another virus or bacteria.

Well done to Ireland he had a cracking season.

However I can't help but feel a certain Mr Ronaldo may feel a little hard done by.

Saying that you're not likely to vote for a player who has just left!
