Roque Santa Cruz, Vincent Kompany and Michael Johnson are all racing to be the first to challenge for a first team place after injury problems disrupted their pre-season preparations.
All three are set to feature in specially-arranged behind-closed-doors games against invited opposition in the next three weeks as their rehabilitation continues apace.
The team's strong start to the season has allowed Hughes to resist any temptation to rush the trio back too quickly.
But with Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure both likely to be away for the African Cup of Nations in January, the manager is particularly keen to get Santa Cruz and Kompany fully functional by the time autumn leaves start to fall.
"The international break has actually come at a good time for Roque," said Hughes. "Psychologically he's not missing any more games but he's adding to his fitness.
"When's he ready he will be involved, we want to get him in a City shirt and playing because he is going to be a big asset for us. With our options up front, we can give him the time he needs."
Kompany return
Kompany is also close to a return, while Johnson needs more cautious treatment.
"The approach we are taking with Michael is that we want to give him games to give him a base level of fitness," said Hughes.
"He's been out for a year, if we rush him back he could break down.
"We'll get him involved with the reserves, and if we get him and the other two up and running in the next month or so, it's like three new signings."
The returning threesome will increase the competition for places even further but Hughes says no-one is under any illusions about the need to rotate the squad.
"There's an understanding that at times the next game or opposition might not be the right one for them to be in the side," he added.
"I look at the opposition and the threats our players can make, and against different teams you need different threats.
"That will always come into my thinking and the players understand that situation."
Which of those three players do you think would command a first-team place? Have your say.

Me thinks they all will play, but not necessarily at the same time ;-)

Kompany coming back will really sure up any defensive frailties and will certainly be great cover for the likes of Barry. I would have Kompany before De Jong on any day, but have De Jong as back up. If Kompany moves back to cover Toure then De Jong will get games, though I don't see him getting too many if everyone is fit.
As for MJ, only time will tell, but if he can re create the form we have seen him in before, then it will really be a selection headache for Hughes. I think resting ireland now and again is no bad thing and Barry and MJ in middle of the park is an exciting combi as is Ireland and Barry.
Basically, all this is showing me, is that we are suddenly a squad with depth and quality, which does really makew a difference to form over a long season.

I hope to God that Petrov knuckles down and accepts that he is going nowhere, at least until the January transfer window anyway. Come on Johnson, prove me wrong PLEASE!

Santa Cruz should be able to slip into the Adebayor role when he is absent in January and Kompany likewise for Toure.
All those folks who criticize MH should realise that unlike other managers who have just dived in and bought players at random, he has looked at the long-term picture, wanting players with not just ability but more importantly a professional attitude and hunger for success. He's a manager who notices small details as well as the blindingly obvious. What we've got now under MH in a short space of time is a squad of players who are committed and PROFESSIONAL - not just content to pick up their salaries each week no matter what performance they turned in.
The journey starts here !

There is no evidence that Peter Beagrie ever owned a Beagle or that Phil Neal used laxatives.
Furthermore, it is a matter of pure conjection as to whether Bert Trautman was issued with an FG42 rifle, or whether Big Helen had swollen ankles.

I can't wait to see RSC in a city shirt, he had an outstanding season under MH at Blackburn (in a pretty average squad) so I wait with baited breath to see what he does a city.
Kompany was outstanding last season (even playing with a broken toe for the latter part of the season) and the fact that his name was mentioned with regard to a transfer to Barcelona speaks volumes.

We'll win the Premier League with this squad I say, don't you reds doubt us, as we'll be miles ahead by May
Robinho's staying, Kompany's about to be playing, and the reds are a praying
We are kicking the ball with strength and precision, the reds can only look with dismay as they flounder around in the hay

Now, did I miss something yesterday? Was it some sort of day of hibernation? No updates whatsoever on the MEN football pages. And not too many posts today dated yesterday?
Perhaps it was the England game that put many to sleep.

Have to agree with you on this one....
My point - Why now all of a sudden are a select few saying that they do not think MJ will play for City again...Stupid comments if MH thought the same, would he not have been shown the door too? Like he(MH) has stated the lad needs time to recover and that is what he is doing recovering. He is a quality player that has come through the ranks and I'm sure if he was not to play again we would have known by now. So i suggest to those that think in this way that they need to understand the ways of football business and cease spouting out silly commments that stand no ground what so ever.
