CITY have rejected Sir Alex Ferguson's criticisms of their transfer policy after buying two more defenders.
Despite a last-minute hitch on Monday night, the Blues are confident of today wrapping up the £24m purchase of Everton's Joleon Lescott, which will take the club's summer spending over £110m.
And the Blues, who say the Lescott delay is not to do with fitness or money, also snapped up former Barcelona and Arsenal left-back Sylvinho on a free transfer.
In fact, Everton are so sure Lescott will be a City player they have set their sights on luring former Blue Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth as his replacement.
City's big-spending has attracted the snipers throughout the transfer window, especially United boss Sir Alex.
City chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak has responded strongly to Fergie's barbs over City's strategy, and the price they paid for former United loan ace Carlos Tevez. The Blues' judgement has again been questioned after they agreed a fee with Everton which will make Lescott, who passed his medical in Manchester on Monday, the third most expensive defender in football history when they complete the deal.
But Khaldoon said: "Value for money is a very subjective statement.
"The value of a player is up to the club purchasing him, and down to the club's needs.
"Sir Alex Ferguson commented on the price we paid for Carlos Tevez, and Mark's response was spot-on, that the value of Carlos to City is maybe different to his value to United.
"Looking back at every acquisition we have made, I think we have got value, and that the results will show they were the right choices."
City strikers
Ferguson also took a swipe at City for being top-heavy with strikers after they had signed Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Emmanuel Adebayor.
But Khaldoon found those comments strange as well, adding: "We had a lot of strikers and there was a joke about Manchester City having 11 strikers.
"The reality was that this was a carefully thought-out strategy of not selling until we brought in the talent we wanted.
"It was the right strategy. We would have hung ourselves out to dry if we had sold all our strikers before we brought in the acquisitions we made. It's one more example of unfounded criticism.
"There are always going to be critics, especially when you are successful, and we have to deal with that. We have done that very well for the last 12 months, and it will only increase.
"We want to prove to everyone we can do it the right way, and that is the way we have been doing it."
The chairman also hinted that the target of a top-six finish which was mentioned to Hughes at the start of the summer may have been revised.
He said: "Sheikh Mansour is very clear in terms of the target he has for us, and we have been working on this to reach full alignment on a realistic target for us this year.
"Given the squad we have and given the time we have had to build the squad, it is a target we will be keeping between us."
Meanwhile, Sylvinho's arrival is expected to trigger the release of Javier Garrido, wanted by Racing Santander, while Lescott's signing will alert a host of clubs queuing for Richard Dunne's services.
What do you think? Have your say.

Thank you Sheikh Monsour and Khaldoon al Mubarek for choosing our club and making our dreams come true.

City are indeed very fortunate to have such serious, committed and responsible owners. They act with dignity and conviction in everything that they do.
There is no need to react to the Red Knight, let the results on the pitch do the talking.

Do you think old bacon face would be castigating David Gill on their own buying policy then? Absolutely not!
The game is rife with petty jealousies and hypocritical people... they just need to shut up and concentrate on their teams!!

I still cannot get used to this business like (after football is a business - like it or not) approach. For once the whole management structure seem to be pulling in the right direction.
Surely something must go wrong somewhere. Perhaps Oil will dry up in Abu Dhabi prompting a quick fire sale to Mike Ashley. Even worse we decide to give Lee Peacock another go up front - after all he never got that many games to prove himself the first time round. Or perhaps worse of all Sir Alex starts giving us some credit - please god never let that happen. His rants and ridiculous whinging about City prove that we are on the right track to success and the day he praises us is the day we spend another stint in the Championship. Besides seeing him rattled beats any entertainment I could pay for.

We are in good hands. I was trying to think of a home game that I would like the Sheikh to see, and I am struggling, not because I am worried, quite the opposite - I think we can beat any team in the league at home.
Well done to the people who put the banner up, it seems to get our feelings across much more appropriately than those clowns that wore t-towels on their heads. I guess they meant well....
Welcome Joleon and Sylvio (the best character on the Sopranos).

need to have a win at palace, hopefully no slip ups here, if we win it will be further proof that we are shaking the tag of 'typical city'
very impressed with the chairman, intellegent and down to earth man who seems to understand the ins and outs of runnning a football club. talks a lot of sense and seems to have alot of faith in mark hughes, as i do.

Monkey tennis?, yes please (25/08/2009 at 09:52)
The other comedy basic is commenting on Value for Money. It is blatantly apparent that they don't give a monkey's about value for money, so why mention it.
Why? Because Fergie's got his goat - round 1 to the reds!
At least Hughes has kept reasonably quiet/

AS YOU SAY BACON FACE "it`s not on" - MAYBE THAT`S GOT SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE BULLS**T THAT YOU`RE DICTATOR (DOUBLE GLAZIER) IS DICTATING TO YOU - THAT`S "Yes Taggart we`ve taken £80 million for the Ballet Dancer but you can`t spend a penny more of it after you`ve signed Valencia & Obertan `cos we`ve got an unserviceable loan to repay at our THEATRE OF DEBT, but don`t be telling the world that you`ve got no dosh to spend, just pretend you don`t need to spend `cos you`re happy with what you`ve got, then I (Glazier) won`t get it in the neck from the "fans" that I`m fleecing!".
HAPPY DAZZZZZE!!! UP THE BLUES!!!!!!

Khaldoon is an intelligent, articulate and calm guy who knows exactly where this club is heading, and the means to make it happen.
I must admit after 41 years of watching City, I got a real buzz of excitement from this interview that I haven`t felt about football for a very long time.
Our signings have been top class, and regardless of all the flak coming from the press and other managers, there isn`t one premiership manager who wouldn`t gladly swap places with Mark Hughes right now! CTID

Like to see Onuoha playing and Kompany when he is fit.
Hughes has also been very impressive in his interviews
