The Blues' chief executive believes the next phase of the task of rebuilding City is to win over the supporters.
City fans have a reputation as hangdog stalwarts, hardened into cynicism from years of failure and unfulfilled promises, sustained only by their loyalty, camaraderie and gallows humour.
Cook believes one of the biggest tasks the new regime at the club faces is to give those supporters a new outlook, without losing the essence of what it means to be a Blue.
As well as wanting to build an "untypical" new club, Cook also wants to take the negative edge off the old Blue war cry of "City `til I die."
That doesn't mean tinkering with their lifelong dedication but rather removing the bleak aspect of the phrase.
He said: "There were two phrases which struck me when I first came here - 'typical City' and 'City 'til I die.' They tell you two things about the personality of the culture.
"`Typical City' says to me `We're not very good, but it's OK.' It means you are embarrassed by mistakes - you shouldn't be, because we all make mistakes.
"It's also an excuse for when you do make a mistake - you can just say `Well, that's us.'
"And 'City `til I die' seems to mean the fans have been through the pain and the agony and were all getting on a bit.
"To build for the future you want eight-year-old kids saying 'I want to play for City' because that helps everything. He doesn't want to think about dying, because he's just got here!"
SWP
The theme has been picked up by Shaun Wright-Phillips, who knows all about "typical City" from his two spells at the club.
He said: "The fact that on the day I came back to City we stayed in the UEFA Cup through a last-minute own goal against Midtjylland and then won a dramatic penalty shoot-out made me smile," he said.
"I'm used to that being the way with City - it was always like that when I was coming through the ranks.
"We always liked to do the things the hard way, but hopefully the boss is slowly but surely getting that out of us now and this is a club geared for sustained success."
As well as aiming to transform the team on the pitch, Sheikh Mansour and his new executive team have set about revolutionising the club from within.
They want Eastlands, Platt Lane, and Carrington - as well as the new academies to be rolled out around the world - to be vibrant, positive, optimistic work places.
"I think our fans are appreciative of Sheikh Mansour because we have something real here," said Cook.
"There is consistency in the management team, we have a new executive leadership team, we are opening a new retail store, building new offices, we have a new website, the kit launches next week, and we are buying new players.
"When you talk about those things, it can be infectious, and that is what we are trying to do, make it infectious."
The change which the Arab owners want to effect at City is deeper and longer-term that what Roman Abramovich's riches have done at Chelsea.
But Cook recognises that City do see the evolution at Stamford Bridge as a yardstick for their own progress, even though Chelsea began from a stronger position as they were already a Champions League qualifier when the Russians moved in.
"On Wednesday of last week it was six years to the day that Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea," said Cook.
"You keep looking at these marker stones from the past and try to learn from what has been done, both good and the bad."
Do you think it is possible for City to shake off their old characteristics? Have your say.

Sadly you have a very different understanding of the two phrases than the majority of City fans. Please apply all your energy into delivering our transfer targets, because if you keep talking the talk and not walking the walk then we will give you your very own phrase "the man that failed to deliver".

Typical marketing flannel. Its means loyalty to the club, not being like some glory hunting United fan but sticking with the club for life. Instead of this garbage Cookjust get on and sign Eto'o, Tevez, Terry and Lescott.Lets see you do your bit to change the image by signing the players that are needed. Talk is cheap. Start delivering.

The one about him nearly being brought to tears when we equalised against blackburn last season was well funny!

Its alright for Garry Cook to say that he wants to change the way the supporters feel about the club, but he needs to look at the way the club is going forward with its purchasing of new players in relation to the length of time its taking getting any !! Then he may have a chance of changing our way of looking at the club. Its a farce at the moment no wonder anybody can take us seriously, and I have been supporting this club for over 60 years.

He's right, all the big plans for the future, all the transfer talk, it's infectious isn't it? We've all been guilty of getting caught up in it all - demonstrated by the frustration that we're not signing all our targets today!
It's hard to be so patient with such enthusiasm and positivity all around the club but that's what we've got to do: be patient.

Although I think "City til I die" obviously means you will stick with the club you love until you die. Nothing negative there at all I think. Well I will put an end to stating the blatantly obvious.
Onwards and upwards!

Its a chant of distain at glory hunting fans from other clubs like the rags and Chelsea who jump on the bandwagon of success, telling them that although we arn't as succesful as you, we will NEVER waiver in our support of City.
Of course, if as we hope we become successful and start to win trophies, the meaning of "City til I die" will not be diluted for the majority of fans, but the inevitable addition of more supporters from across the globe that will join the City faithful this will not have the same meaning to them, but we should not dismiss these fans for this, thats just a bi-product of the success we all crave. My son is 6,went to his first game when he was 3, and will hopefully be lucky enough to be part of this great new era for our club, and be a part of the success, and see the team lift trophies.
City til I die....and then some

A. No its what makes us what we are,a real club a fans club and one of the few clubs genuine fans follow.

As for CTID, this is a true statement of commitment and loyalty to the club from lifelong fans who were born blue and will shuffle from this mortal coil as blues, having created new blues along the way as did my late father (whose ashes are scattered on Maine Rd) who introduced myself and my two brothers to city, something which I also did with my three sonns who are all fervent blues. It is about tradition Gary, not just grabbing some new 8 year olds who will support you whilst you are top of the league and then move on when another team breaks through. You are a Birmingham lad, but you are in Manchester now, you are doing a great job in my opinion, but please get to grips with our history and strength of feeling for our club.

Dont blame City for the delays as given a choice i guarantee that they would want the players signed, sealed and delivered but there is only so much we can do.
The players will come, whether it is those that we are being linked with is not certain but i for one believe that our squad is better than we have had in many a blue moon, i have a good feeling about next season and the years to come.
Lets just see how long before the usual suspects with all their negativity arrive on this story...
