SAMUEL Eto’o would like to stay at Barcelona next season but would be “delighted” to join Manchester City if he can’t agree a new contract with the Spanish champions, the player’s agent has announced.
Eto’o has just one year remaining on his current deal with the Catalan giants and Josep Maria Mesalles is unhappy that the club appear to be forcing Eto’o out against his wishes.
Mesalles called a press conference to clarify his client’s situation on Tuesday morning.
In it, he claimed Barcelona - for the second year running - had initially told him Eto’o was free to leave the Nou Camp although the club changed tack last night by putting a new two-year deal on the table for the Cameroon international.
“On June 2, the club called a meeting and I was told by (Barca sporting director) Txiki Begiristain and (director of football) Raul Sanllehi that due to a technical decision, Samuel does not feature in the club’s plans next season,” he said.
“We then had another meeting and I was told once again that Samuel was not in their plans for next season.”
Mesalles is keen to speak to Barca coach Pep Guardiola to clarify the situation.
“Guardiola said at the end of the season that he was delighted with Samuel, so I don’t know what has changed,” he said.
“My mistake was to not verify this information and we need to find out what the coach wants, because he is the one who ultimately decides.”
Treble
Barcelona offered Eto’o, who scored 35 goals as Barca claimed an unprecedented treble of the Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League last season, the new deal last night, but Mesalles is unsure as to the club’s motives.
“I don’t know if everything changed in the space of an afternoon, I don’t know if they really want Samuel to stay of if they just want to make money out of him,” he said.
Mesalles insists his player’s preference is to stay at the Nou Camp, but says he will leave if he is not wanted.
“He would be delighted to stay if they want him and we will study their offer if it is serious, but if they don’t want him we will do all we can to help Samuel find a new club,” he said.
Mesalles revealed that he has not spoken to Manchester City, who have reportedly made a 25.5million euro offer for Eto’o and put to him a contract described by Barca president Joan Laporta as “stratospheric”.
“We have not sat down to speak to them (City), but they have made Barcelona an offer,” he said.
Mesalles said Eto’o had wanted to play in the Champions League next season, but that he would be happy to join Mark Hughes’ side if he cannot reach an agreement to remain in Catalonia.
“In theory he wanted to play in the Champions League, but if Manchester City have an offer accepted, we would be delighted to go there,” he said.
Mesalles spent half of Monday with Eto’o in Paris, but the player is now on holiday with his family and is planning to return for pre-season training on July 20.
“He will arrive in Barcelona on July 19 and will be ready for the first day of training and the medical exams the next day,” Mesalles said.
What do you think? Have your say.

To me Eto`o lacks ambition if he couldn`t see the way the future is panning out at City, so not over bothered. CTID

Cant you all see just whats happening here guys, ITS ALL PAPER TALK!!. The media is loving this and we to are getting caught up in all the hype, as i said in a previous post, Gareth barry came out of the blue. We knew from day one that MH wanted RSC, now, might i suggest that any transfer dealings that are done will be along the lines of Barry, and that city will not be giving the top 4 loving red tops, sky sports, talksport, and the countless moronic rags who post on here the ammunition to spout their endless drivel...
Come on lads we'er better and bigger than this..

"If they [barca] have a serious offer from Manchester City, and if they want to continue with this negotiation we could be interested," Mesalles added.
"We haven't spoken to City but if Barca have reached an agreement it shouldn't be that difficult to reach a deal."

Lets just hope Tevez signs or we're going to look ridiculous.
Interesting post by
Nellie wheres yurandbag, Sale.... but how do reputable sites like the BBC get to report on bids being accepted by Barca, if there has been no bid made?
Back in the days just after Kaka fiasco, MH tried hard to retain his composure and save face by stating that no offer was actually made. I think GC may well be trying to pull the same stunt here, so we can walk away with honour intact - but let's be honest, he's fooling no-one. Of course figures have been discussed and proposals made, even if there's been no 'formal' offer.

I'm sure GMP are delighted at the prospect of thousands of Glaswegians in the City centre again. Some people have very short memories.

Agreed! If he doesnt want to come for whatever reason, fair enough. Lets move on to the next. Only another two months of transfer window, plenty of time to bring someone else in.

We might sign him, we might not. I'm just a little fed up of all the paper talk saying we are signing the whole world and his brother. Besides, haven't we got enough strikers? Isn't it in defence we need to make some buys?

Eto'o's lawyer used the press conference to basically criticise Barcelona, its directors and the manager Pep Guardiola and try to get the fans on his side.
The intention was prob that Eto'o if he leaves, does not want to be branded a money grabber lol. He denied inter alia holding out for half the transfer fee (if you believe that you'd believe anything).
He is now about as popular as a fart in an astronauts suit. So just the idea of Eto'o staying is almost as hilarious as the 2yr contract offer they text to him last night when the manager does not want him.
He then at one point said he liked the sound of our offer and then later said he had never seen an offer from us (this is a lawyer talking). I posted on Vital as I was listening and wevegotrobinho.
