Even though the £25m deal to bring in Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o is unlikely to succeed, with City helpless to do anything about it, they could well secure Carlos Tevez as early as Wednesday meaning they will have TEN front-line strikers in a top-heavy squad.
Eto'o is expected to announce a decision on his future later today but the signs are looking bad for City.
“If there is not a 180-degree turnaround then he will stay with Barcelona,” Eto’o’s agent Josep Maria Mesalles told ONA FM on Monday evening.
As City found out in their ill-fated pursuit of Kaka in January, the pitfalls and loopholes are endless in the business of buying footballers.
Lessons have clearly been learned from that embarrassment, as the stalking of Eto'o has been more studied and discreet.
The Blues have done all they can to secure the deal by agreeing a fee with the club, and making the player a big wage offer - which is believed to be in the region of £170,000 a week.
Tevez is more of a sure thing, though there are a few people in the City management team holding their breath and hoping there are no more twists in his salutary transfer tale.
Expires
The temporary deal struck between the Argentinian ace's `owner' Kia Joorabchian and United expires today, leaving him free to complete a £25.5m move to City.
The task for manager Mark Hughes now is to trim down an overflowing forward department.
Hughes' position will be straightforward - regardless of reputation, any and all new players will have to scrap it out for their place.
Every top club has at least four top-line strikers, and Craig Bellamy's first job is to ensure he is in that reckoning - and with Santa Cruz's recent injury history, he has every chance.
Beyond that, things look gloomier for the likes of Jo, Felipe Caicedo, Valeri Bojinov, Benjani, Ched Evans and Darius Vassell. Daniel Sturridge is expected to sign for Chelsea after his City contract expires today, to trim one name off the list.
The Blues will undoubtedly sell off several of those players, but - without financial worries - they are in no rush to recoup their huge outlay.
Panic
That means they will hang on to players as long as necessary in order to get the full market price and, traditionally, prices begin to rise as the big kick-off nears and clubs start to panic.
Jo has already been offered to Everton as part of the offer for England defender Joleon Lescott and Caicedo is making noises about a move to Sporting Lisbon.
The unfortunate Bojinov wants to stay and prove himself after two injury-wrecked seasons, but he will probably have to make way, with Wolfsburg top of the list of interested clubs.
Benjani is another one who wants to fight for his place but the club will listen to offers and Portsmouth, if they can sort out their messy takeover, want him back.
Evans has already been the subject of a rejected £1.5m bid from Sheffield United, but an improved offer from the Blades would probably clinch the deal.
Vassell is another whose current deal expires today - along with Danny Mills, Dietmar Hamann and Michael Ball, who will be seeking to stay in the Premier League.
Which strikers would you like to see at the club at the start of the season? Have your say.

Remember, it was only a little over 2 years ago that we were watching Pearce's team with Samaras on the left wing, Vassell on the right with Carradi up top.
WE'RE NOT REALLY HERE.

City have nothing to be embarrassed about, it is your colleagues in The Press, Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter who should be embarassed for having double standards in thier views on football.

Bojinov - he showed enough in the friendlies at the start of season before he got injured to make me think he could be special...BUT...too similar to Tevez and Bellamy maybe?
Caicedo - looks better and better and in a couple of years think he could be really top drawer. Whether he wants to wait that time out in the reserves and league cup games is another matter.
Go
Jo....not impressed really, not sure he's got the work rate and appetite to really make it in the prem
Benjani...go, thanks for the goal against the rags, but...not good enough, injury prone and possible too old to get any better
Evans....Ched, so near and yet so far. Great ethic, some lovely touches, but doesn't convert. Maybe starting week in week out at a lesser team will help. Sorry lad.
Vass....I remember when he came and how the boards were in uproar at how injury prone he was. In fact he's kept himeslf pretty fit. Always gives 110%, I for one will be sorry to see him go, but in the new era not quite good enough. Hope he gets a good payday somewhere else.

Bellamy, Caicedo and Bojnov must stay, the last two are young and we can afford their wages!!
Looking forward to some defensive signings shortly and the new website tomorrow.

Other clubs fans are showing there vitriole towards us as a result of pure jealousy...and Blatter, well he just needs to crawl back into his hole.Funny how he never complained about Madrid isn't it.DOUBLE STANDARDS-fact. Can't wait for city to break the top 4 within 2 seasons and to buy even better and pay even better when we break into the champions league.
Hold onto your hats because its not gonna be easy.clubs, fans, media now see us as Public enemy number 1 in football.Personally I really like it,I love it when my lad is walking round the shops with his city shirt on and instead of having his name on his back he has the word "loaded". The envious looks man u,everton, liverpool fans give him is hilarious.
If we are hated it is for one reason,it is because we are now seen as a threat but I just refer back to the article our chairman wrote recently..
Clear, concise, calm business plan. Roll on Blackburn away.

remember Didi leaning on every attacker, special delights.
our attackers.
RSC,
Tevez [ pleaseeeeeeeese]
Robinho
Petrov
Bellamy
and if any one else wants to stay and fight.
Caicedo.
that is enough for any team, and if Eto'o does bring his tax free wheelbarrow to City, then Caicedo would be surplus.and Bellamy or Petrov would drop into the 6th choice place.
but if we only have 4 on the books.
then goodbye Caicedo and Bellamy and Petrov [ shame]
but i think some will stay and see out their contract, and give us a little more choice when playing the reserves at the Atheletic ground.
and Cassells kids ?? does not look too good, they need to be VERY VERY good to get into Hughes's team, i hope they are given the chance.

Sell: Benjani, Evans
Loan: Jo & Caicedo
Keep: Bellamy, Santa-Cruz, Bojinov, Tevez (IF WE GET HIM!)
Is anyone else sctraching their head as to how we are going to be lining up next season? I must have looked at hundreds of formations and teams all of which are viable, but all of which leave out at least 2/3 players we would never have entertained of leaving out 2 seasons ago! I think De Jong, Bojinov, Richards, Elano and Petrov are going to have a real fight on their hands to get regular game time, which in a world cup year COULD mean they move on in January. CTID

realy worried we are going to start the new season with Bellamy and Cruz as the main front men to find us goals, stating the obvious but there both at some point going to be injured and who know's how long they may be out.
the club is overloaded with forwards who can't score goals, it need's sorting out now otherwise it's gonna be last minute bargain basement buying.

Remind me again, aside from Rooney and the OAP that is Ryan Giggs- who is particularly special in your starting XI?
