CITY have finally landed Roque Santa Cruz - and taken a big step towards giving him a new strike partner.
While the Paraguay international was signing on the dotted line for the Blues on Monday evening, word trickled into Eastlands that Chelsea have dropped out of the race to sign Carlos Tevez.
Barring any latecomers, or a change of heart by the United man, that leaves City with a clear run at signing the player.
Tevez is still contracted to United until next Tuesday under the terms of his "owner" Kia Joorabchian's deal with the Reds.
But City, who have held talks with Joorabchian and are prepared to meet the asking price of £25.5m, are firmly in the driving seat.
Chelsea are believed to have pulled the plug after refusing to sanction Tevez's £100,000-a-week wages.
Ambitions
Manager Mark Hughes plans to pair Tevez with Santa Cruz, the 27-year-old Blackburn and former Bayern Munich man having penned a four-year contract.
And Santa Cruz says he has joined City in order to fulfil his Champions League ambitions - his two years at Ewood Park coming after eight silver-laden years at Bayern.
He revealed the chance of linking up again with Mark Hughes, the man who retrieved him from the Bayern bench and turned him into a Rovers' hero, was a major factor.
But the quiet ambition of the club's new owners and the passionate City fans also had a big bearing on his decision.
"I know the kind of football Mark Hughes wants to play and the kind of character he is - he's a winner, he wants to make things happen and be successful," said Santa Cruz.
"Those are always my thoughts as well, so knowing what he wants was a big factor in coming here, because I know the club is going in the right direction.
"I know his staff and the kind of training they will have the team doing, so everything was very attractive for me.
"The owners want the club to be more successful - they want to break into the top four, and the fact that the fans are so passionate about everything to do with City was also a factor. I am very motivated to play for these fans.
"I spoke to the chairman and I know his ambitions are known to everybody at the club - he made sure that I know as well.
"It was a good conversation. He wants the best for the club and to give something back to the fans."
Medical
The one remaining doubt over the transfer had been yesterday's medical at a private hospital in Whalley Range, but Santa Cruz - who had knee surgery in April - came through without problems.
And he spoke of his relief at finally completing a move he has wanted since City first made a move in January.
"I'm very happy to have signed for City - it's been close to happening for a while, and now I can just focus on football and concentrate on doing my best for the club," he said.
Manager Hughes is on holiday, but interrupted his break to welcome his second major signing of the summer.
"We're delighted to get him here," he said. "It was really important that we signed him, as it's an area of the squad that we have needed to address for some time, and the qualities Roque brings will be of great benefit."
What is your verdict on the Santa Cruz? Have your say.

As for Carlos, great news that Chelski have dropped out, although I think he would have come to us anyway.

I remember when we played blackburn last season and got beat. We were all over the place trying to handle this guy. He is a real hard player to man mark and win the ball from. If and only If he stays fit I will be a happy supporter. Keeping my fingers crossed he does not get injured. If so he will be a city hero i am sure of it.

Do you think that the club has only got the one up to now, and they're having to share, or are the Umbro tops designed for the smaller person...?

And should we not focus on defence quite soon? It was the least impressing part of our side last year. Hope to se some major signings there.

Thanks for your comments on the Eto'o thread. Whatever flu I had I am over now. I don't think it was either Swine Flu or any other Flu to be honest. Another anecdote for the Doctor I think and for me comparisons to Lazarus.

Tevez was always going to sign for us, his family come first (like most of us mere mortals) and his family are very happy here in manchester. His agent went to great lengths to talk about ambition and not the fact he has to play champios league football.
And to all Utd fans don't dare spout off about coming for the money and preaching how we sold our souls for sucess. Ask youselves how did the Glaziers take control of your once debt free club? Thats right you sold out for the dream of untold riches and the best players in the world. Shame you sold your soul for fools gold. So don't preach when others chase the dream too!!
It had been coming since the eighties with the Michael Knighton fiasco and then you were the first club to sell yourself to the stock market in return for more cash, now the Glaziers.
Big club? maybe but you rip off the people who love you whereas city may be owned by the Sheik but at least he isnt ripping the fans off!! Far from it we city fans have never had it so good.

Hopefully the 4 hour med has put paid to any doubts about his fitness and dodgy knees. I can see him being a fantastic holding player and can imagine it now: Barry to Ireland to Robinho to RSC to Tevez to Eto'o GOAL!!!! "Taggart's is fuming, this is the first team he has ever managed that has conceded 8 goals"!!!!
COME ON CITY!!!!!

funny how your always on the blue site is'nt it....
the only things going on at your club are players leaving (snigger snigger). and the next few seasons will be even better, Giggs retiring, Scholes retiring, Van Der Sar retiring, Neville retiring. then you look at the rest of your squad, the majority are pushing 30, not exactly spring chickens are they.
the future's bright......the future's BLUE

Hope that the likes of Wiess and Mcgivern get chances or they'll be off, and this is the season to give them a chance and get them involved.
Now for Lescott, Kolo and Veloso TOP 4/5 finish with a cup.
Off thread, when is the MCFC website going to sort out the squad pictures!!! No Barry yet and still a lot of dead wood. Come on City get a grip.
