Boss Mark Hughes has declared that he will not be rushed into trimming his squad any more than is necessary and that he will buy before he sells.
And that is not good news for a host of top Championship sides and Premier League rivals Stoke who are all looking to prise Wales international Ched Evans away from City.
Academy product Evans was in a similar position 12 months ago when, fresh from setting the Championship alight with 10 goals in 28 games on loan at Norwich City, the bustling hitman was the subject of no fewer than a dozen enquiries.
Then new boss Mark Hughes decided he wanted to take a longer look at the 20-year-old and resisted all loan enquiries.
Evans subsequently made his mark as a substitute in the early rounds of the UEFA Cup before leading a depleted attack in the opening league game of the season at Aston Villa in what was his top flight debut.
He finally got off the mark in terms of goals when he was one of half-a-dozen separate scorers in the six-goal rout of Portsmouth in September.
But despite success in a UEFA Cup penalty shoot-out against Midtjylland in Denmark, Evans failed to add to that total in the rest of the season and eventually made five starts and 19 appearances from the bench.
Towards the end of the season Ecuador international Felipe Caicedo, a £5m purchase by previous manager Sven- Goran Eriksson, was preferred up front along with Zimbabwe captain Benjani.
Window
With big money striking acquisitions top of the priority shopping list this transfer window, it appears that Evans' future chances at City will be few and far between and he may be one of three or four hit men allowed to leave once replacements have been found.
Stoke are believed to be leading the chase but Hull and promoted trio Wolves, Birmingham and Burnley might all be interested in the player along with Sheffield United and Reading who narrowly missed out on coming up this season.
City would be looking for at least £3m with a healthy sell-on clause attached for the player.
They are resigned to saying goodbye to Darius Vassell as the former England striker's four-year stay comes to an end after 110 starts and 22 goals.
Hughes may also listen to bids for former Portsmouth ace Benjani whose season has been badly interrupted by injury and the manager could well be waving goodbye to both Daniel Sturridge, who is out of contract, and Brazilian Jo though the Blues would have to be prepared to take a financial hit on the £19m signing who spent the last months of the season on loan at Everton who do not want to keep him permanently.
That would leave Hughes with Bulgarian international Valerie Bojinov, Craig Bellamy and the aforementioned Caicedo as his three strikers plus any others he brings to the club.
With Europe off the agenda for next season it may be that the manager operates with a smaller but higher quality squad next time around.
City used more than 30 different players in the first team in the campaign just gone.
"What we intend to do this summer is add real quality to the first team and some depth that will make the squad better as a whole. I certainly will not be letting players go until I am satisfied we have the right depth and the right quality," declared the manager.
"We are looking to bring in quality at the top end. It is difficult to put a number on how many players might come in during the summer because we don't know yet who exactly will be available and who we will be able to bring to the club but we are in the market for quality and I have every expectation that I will be brining good players to the club. We are looking to be positive in the market from the moment it opens."
Blues fans are expecting something of a mass clearout this summer with Michael Ball, Didi Hamann and cult hero Glauber Berti also out of contract and Tal Ben Haim, Kasper Schmeichel, Shaleum Logan, Kelvin Etuhu and Gelson Fernandes all likely to be targeted as they struggle to nail down a regular berth in the side.
Israeli international Ben Haim could be a target for former boss Sam Allardyce at Blackburn.
How would you shuffle the City squad? Have your say.

Its all well and good Hughes thinking that we need a decent sized squad but it isnt a numbers game, quality over quantity every time.
With no European football next season we may only need a squad of 18-20 players so if the likes of TBH, Evans and Fernandes were sold tomorrow it would have little or no effect because I would not expect them to get a single minute on the pitch next season, if they do then Hughes will have not done his job properly over the Summer!

The problem with Jo and Benji is that they are too expensive for anyone else (at their skill level) to buy and, other than help with wages, there is no future in us loaning them out. You have to say that they were both terrible purchases for the price. Anyway, looking forward, TBH, Logan, Etuhu and Gelson should all be easy to off-load to the newcomers, as they all have something to offer a Championship level side and they should not be too expensive. Obviously those out of contract will leave anyway. The only one I'd like to see stay is Sturridge. I'm undecided on Evans, I like him but he must play alongside another forward, which is something of a luxury nowadays, it seems. Elano can go for my money, he is not really a squad player and will only be kept to keep Robinho happy. I would like to see some speculation about defenders and quality midfield players rather than forwards all the time. We are not going to win anything with De Jong and Kompany in midfield, except, perhaps, a trophy for the most number of square and back passes.

My only fear now is, Real madrid and possibly chelsea will be looking at those players we want. Then it wont be about money we offer but medals.
On that note, why do people slag off city for wanting to sign major players and say daft things like why would they sign for city. Dont they realise that the more big names we sign, the more will come.
Depending on what business we do this summer, I think we can win some silverware next season. Last season was always going to be a transition stage.

If he is now settled in the North, I guess Darius could end up at Burnley, but Wolves wouldn't surprise me, certainly can't see him at Stoke getting on the end of a Delap throwin. Did Darius really score 22 goals in 110 appearances....... only one sticks in my memory for some reason!

As for Danny sturridge lets get rid of him. He is too big for his boots and although he may be an excellent prospect he has done nothing to deserve a Richards, Ireland type contract as his attitude and performance are well below par.
As for the rest of the players leaving, thanks for the memories. Didi for his calmness and simple passing in midfield. Vass and Benji for you goals against the scum and not forgetting Berti! I'm positive that we would have been relegated this year if it wasn't for your contribution. I true Man City Legend, right up there with the Invisible Man!!
All the best lads and good luck in the future.

i like the idea of a smaller squad with more quality. if we could get tevez and barry, as is being speculated, along with a quality CB (luscio from benfica) and another midfielder (yaya toure would be the dream), that would then free up captain elect Kompany to move to centre back. add to that a striker of the ilk of a drogba, adebayor, santa-cruz or the unhappy at madrid huntelaar and what a team we could have, exciting isnt it boys. how recently was it that we were thinking we were lucky to get the likes of damarcus beasley??? as is so often said on here, enjoy the ride.................
my "could see it happening" dream team for next season would be......

JOHNSON KOMPANY LUSCIO BRIDGE
YAYA TOURE

Proven premiership quality is going to be important again and if we're going to chuck money around, we should be weakening our direct competition's squads in the process like Villa and Everton. Players like Barry and Lescott would be good additions but it's impossible to tell whether they'd want to join us. Tevez would be another player I'd like to see at the club though the competition for his signature might rule that out and also, he doesn't really fit into he formation Hughes is playing unless he leads the line in place of Caicedo and I'd rather have someone a little taller for that role. I think the likes of Ribery, Aguero and Villa should wait for next season and this year, we should concentrate on getting the job done. As such, the big signing for me (much as I hate him) should be Drogba. For all the trouble he causes, quite simply, he scores a hatfull of goals and leads the line on his own. Whether he'd join us I don't know but he's shown himself to be a money grabber before so maybe he will again.
Long and short of it is that I've no idea who we'll end up with but those four would be my main targets for this summer along with an experienced back up keeper if Hart goes on loan.
Fingers crossed, breath held ...

In the first season at SportCity we had 36,000 seasoncards and the average attendence was just under 47,000 - a great achievement.
It's varied over the past few seasons but the average was up to 42,900 this season.
As a matter of interest I had a copy of the seating plans when the stadium was first to be used for Manchester City after the expanssion from the Commonwealth Games capacity. It was 48,500 and I wonder if many seats are 'lost' due to the layout of the seating and the use of stewards.
The highest attendence I can see to date is 47,331 against Chelsea this season?
Let's hope we can kick-on for next season and get the average back to it's capacity.

totally agree, team matters for the team Manager, all that goes on here is pure fantasy, any Manager worth his salt will know most potential incoming players inside out, know loads more about their characters etc than we mere mortals will ever do. Only comment I will make on this article is that the "big money striking acqusitions top of the transfer shoppng list this transfer window" comment is my big concern, sure, we do need those, but surely to God, do we, or do we not, require some serious defensive stiffening as just a high piority as the forwards???, ..................I think so.

I think it is a disgrace that City are destroying football. Our neigbours down the road are now complaining that City are forcing up the prices of certain Players. Their fans are whinging that the price they paid for Berbaflop was inflated because of City and now because of an apparent interest from City, the price for Tevez has increased and they can't afford him anymore.
Towards the end of the season thier fans were screaming for Bacon Face to sign him up, now all of a sudden, Tevez is said to be overated and over priced, with Danny Wellbeck being the next big thing at United!....... it sounds to me that United are a bit short of money..... having said that, when they sell Ronaldo, they should have a bit of cash to splash, but still not enough to buy Tevez.
john@staustell (01/06/2009 at 11:02)
Wait until we sign someone, then you can slag the player off before he's kicked a ball as usual!
bluedefence (01/06/2009 at 11:07)
City will be a very attractive option to CL clubs who need to sell their best players, not only will City offer to dollar, the selling club will also be safe in the knowledge that their ex player wont do a Paul Simpson and come back to haunt them, well for a season at least.
We can also become a complete pain in the back side for the likes of Chelsea and Man U by offering mega money to selling clubs and forcing the price of players way above what they wanted to pay ala Berbatov who probably cost Utd 10 million more than they needed to pay if we hadn’t poked our nose in, which incidentally is probably the reason EM Bruce was so unhappy with City not because of any perceived Palios interest.
Interesting summer ahead.

I see the idiotic game of slagging off the manager/club based on wild tabloid links has begun. Whether anyone is a supporter of Les or not, it is infantile to slag him off based on links to Lucas Neil.
I didn't slag him off based on the links to neil, what i mean is if neil is signed then it show what Hughes thinks is a good player and Neil is definitely not a good player, i saw petrov destroy him twice last season and if petrov is doing him then the better wingers in the premiership will do the same plus he is money grabbing idiot ala danny mills and 30 plus must i go on....
