Hughes hints at Hart loan

Joe Hart
MARK Hughes can still see a very bright future ahead of Joe Hart, even if the City goalkeeper is still feeling a bit gloomy after losing his England place.

The inevitable consequence of Shay Given's £6million arrival from Newcastle was that Hart would be overlooked last night when Fabio Capello named his squad for the matches against Slovakia and Ukraine.

Instead, Ben Foster and Robert Green will supply the back-up to established number one David James - leaving Hart to lick his wounds on the under-21s trip to Norway.

The decision will only reinforce Hart's belief that he needs to look elsewhere to get regular action, with Hughes happy to oblige next season by allowing the former Shrewsbury goalkeeper to leave on loan.

But the City chief is adamant the move will only be temporary and forms part of the harsh education Hart must undergo if he is to fulfil his immense potential.

"It is important Joe knows our feelings with regard to his ability," said Hughes.

"Joe is going to be England's outstanding goalkeeper for the next 10 or 15 years.

"But it is right that we have been able to take him out of the fire, allow him to step back and see where he is.

"It is different with outfield players, because you can keep taking them out and putting them back in again. You can't do that with a goalkeeper, and there are too many examples of young lads who have ended up burnt and scarred and never recovered.

Stance

"I don't want that to happen with Joe."

Hughes' stance certainly has nothing to do with Hart's performances this season, because the 21-year-old has proved himself to be a reliable member of the City team.

But Given does not make the minor mistakes goalkeepers of such inexperience are prone to; hence his January arrival from St James' Park.

"I said at the outset we needed an experienced goalkeeper," recalled Hughes.

"I made an offer for Brad Friedel - and even though in the end nothing happened, I still felt we needed more experience because Joe was bound to suffer fluctuations in form. The opportunity with Shay presented itself, and when that happens you have to move.

"Initially Joe found it very difficult. But he has got his head down now and knows he has to work.

"We can then look at him going out on loan next year - because we want them to develop, and maybe just training day after day is not what they need.

"It is something we will definitely investigate, while always keeping in mind we want them as players for Manchester City."

If Hart had any reservations over Hughes' preferred career path, Micah Richards' situation should focus his mind.

When he burst on to the first-team scene as a 17-year-old and was almost instantly catapulted into the England squad to become the youngest defender to wear the Three Lions, the world appeared Richards' oyster.

But after 11 caps, the Birmingham-born youngster suddenly hit a flat spot - from which, 18 months on, he is only just starting to recover.

A match-winning performance against Sunderland yesterday provided further proof Richards is starting to move forward again.

"Micah is not the finished article - everyone accepts that," said Hughes.

"There are elements of his game he knows he has to improve. If he doesn't, he won't get to the level everyone wants him.

"But the experience he has already gained will help him later in his career."

What do you think? Have your say.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Who would have thought that when Mark bought Given that he would also be resigning at top centre half and a rightback, - 'cos lets face it - when Dunney plays well, Micah plays well.

It would be a HUGE mistake to let Joe go permanently. I'm sure Sparky knows that and hopefully in the 2-3 years left in Given's career (hopefully only that long, I don't want to see him turn into David James' slowly deteriorating shadow of his former self), Hart can gain all the PL experience he needs to couple with his skill and become the best keeper in the league.

This situation has to be handled very very carefully, otherwise inevitably joe will slip through the net.

Just the way to handle a very good young 'keeper. Learning his trade without as much pressure as he would be in the future with City, is just what he needs at this stage of his development.

joe will be more upset because he has already been no1,that is we were left with two very young and inexperience keepers, and joe was just the better of the two.if we had not signed shay i do not think joe would have been any further up the england ladder.but what club could he go to now and be the first choice i dnn't think any club in at least the top 10-12.which he will have to be to be in future reckoning.it will be a hard choice but good luck joe whatever you decide

Fosters had a call up and hes not the Rags Number 1 is he? They manage to keep their "reserves" happy! Why cant we?

I would keep him close to Shay so he keeps learning and play him in the Carling Cup etc.

Surely Joe must realise his time will come again and once Shay retires he could spend years as City's No 1.

Surely Joe knows Shay

this makes great sense, and i hope joe recognises it. but unfortunately patience does not seem to be a major quality in most young players these days, with all that money splashing around to big up their egos and make them all feel like superstars so soon... so i fear we may lose him

Joe`s a smart lad and I am sure both him and the club know that he will benefit from him having a season long loan, and maybe kasper will stay on if this goes ahead?

A season long loan at another premiership club next year would do the trick - a newly promoted club maybe? - to gain experience and get back in the England squad.

Joe would be mad to leave permanently with the players that are going to arrive over the next few years and I think he knows it but I wouldn't blame him for leaving if he's getting splinters on the bench.

How come the rag reserve keeper has took his place,he doesn't get a game either apart from the league cup.

I feel very sorry for Joe Hart, by signing a keeper like Given, with a good few years left, Hughes is essentially excluding a lad whose already had a taste of England experience from the first team. Remember that if it hadn't been for Hart's saves in the preliminary shoot out, Given wouldn't have had his own moment of glory in the Aalborg shoot out. It looks like he may opt to move on, which is a shame.

Joe should only be loaned out to a Premiership club, then when we play them they have to play their second choice keeper.United did this with Howard at Everton and when United played Everton they finished up facing their 4th choice keeper due to injuries.Loaning players out to other Premiership clubs not only helps the player but while he is on loan he may continue to help his own club by in the case of a Goalkeeper keeping clean sheets against rivals of his home club or if he was a striker by scoring goals against rival clubs. United have done this again this season they have strikers Manuchu at Hull and Cambell at Spurs. The loan system is there to be exploited, and clubs like United have been doing it for years. We have the resources to buy an additional 4 strikers who could all be loaned out to selected Premiership clubs who due to the rules can never play against you, it's a no brainer! why not follow United's example and totally exploit the loan system rules. We now have the money to do it!

I must admit that I felt genuinely sorry for Joe yesterday - or at least as sorry as I could be for somebody earning as much as him :) - when he was warming up with Shay as the man in goal and Joe firing balls into him with Hitch. At one point he went over to some fans behind the goal and was signing shirts and programs, not something I've noticed him do before.

It's just bad timing for Joe, I really hope he stays with it and learns as much as he can but there is no doubting that, at the moment, we need experience - I think the penalty shoot out last week shows how important experience is, Shay won the mind games even though Joe may well have been able to stop a couple himself.

I think he will be *the* best keeper in the PL, but not for another 5+ years!

Fabio Capello has decided to omit Hart as he is not first choice anymore. Makes sense to me! However it stopped making sense when I noticed Ben Foster has been selected... he has not made 1 league appearance this system!!!

So the 3rd choice goalie at The Swamp with no league appearances is better than our 2nd choice who has played more than half a season in the first team.

Capello should be embarassed!

We could of course loan Joe to the Rag. Even if he played in their Stiffs then it seems he could still get back into the England squad.

Double standards from Capello on this occasion.

Lets do what the rags did a couple off seasons a go and it worked (fact) Loan out a keeper in the prem but stop them playing against you. ? They did it but they can bend the rules. Howard to everton and Foster to West Browm. It worked out when manure played these teams they could not play there first choice keeper. Four games in total!!!.

Just been on their page and one Jos Parlby said "Living in ROCHDALE its hard for me to get to the ground"!!!!! lol you couldnt make it up

Capello is a clown. Hart, Onouha, Bridge, SWP and Richards should all be in the England squad. If I was Hart, Richards and Onouha I would decline any invitations to the Under 21's. Foster for example ahead of Hart is a wind up. So too the selectionsd of Green and the ageing James who will make costly mistakes mark my words.

Joe Hart will become the England number 1 if not under the management of the clown.

Hope this lad stays with us! He will be a class act, and ENGLAND'S number 1 im sure. By the time he is 24 r so, im hoping he will be CITY'S number 1 for the next 10-15 years or so, as long as he fulfils his potential. We really do need to keep hold of this lad for the future imo!!

CTID.

You surely didn't mean it when you wrote

"but there is no doubting that, at the moment, we need experience - I think the penalty shoot out last week shows how important experience is, Shay won the mind games even though Joe may well have been able to stop a couple himself."

What did Hart do against Midtjylland ?

But for Joe's great performance that evening, we wouldn't be even in the Uefa cup.

Capellos excuse how ever is pretty lame.

I was under the impression that Hart had recently signed a new 4 or 5 year deal, so he isn't going anywhere other than out on loan. Ben Foster was farmed out to Watford by SAF for a couple of years which worked wonders for him. I'm sure that Hart would benefit from the same treatment by Hughes.

I understand your frustration as a City fan, but Capello's job is to get England to a World Cup not to pick MCFC players. Of that list, it was between Hart and Foster for the 3rd G/K spot, and the latter has actually played a Cup Final in the last month and distinguished himself very well. Hart would not have played either of the 2 games coming up in the coming week, Capello knows him and wants to gets another keeper involved in the set-up. But come the finals, all 3 keepers will be ones playing 1st team football: guaranteed

As for the other players you listed, the only player I'd say is making a case for a call-up is Onuoha based on CONSISTENT form over the last few months. If he continues his form I'd say he is due for a call-up before the end of year after he becomes ineligible for the u21s (after the Euro u21s in the summer).

Richards has played a hand full of good games this season and deservedly not in the squad. Games like the weekend vs Sunderland are a good start if he wants to get back in but playing the odd very good game here and there isn't good enough at this level, let alone for a task master like Capello.

I have been criticized on here a while back about my comments about Bridge's performances to date as being not good enough on a consistent basis, and Capello has vindicated this view with the selection of Baines. He has some work to do also.
