Hughes has wasted little time in stamping City's intentions on the transfer market by signing Wayne Bridge from Chelsea for a fee believed to be around £10m.
At 2.55pm yesterday, the England defender waved to the City faithful, clearly delighted at his career choice. A couple of hours later he could be forgiven having second thoughts following a shambolic 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest which condemned the Blues to a second domestic cup exit against lower league opposition this season, following a similarly embarrassing loss to Brighton in September.
Hughes can only hope the unequivocal backing he has so far received from City's new Abu Dhabi-based owners remains intact. For if they flick through an plotted history of Forest's recent inglorious past, they may not be too impressed.
He claimed to have informed chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak precisely what the present situation was at their most recent meeting. But it is doubtful Hughes' assessment would have covered anything quite so humiliating as this sorry debacle.
Still, if there is no wavering, Hughes will spend the next month on a mission to improve, if not to his total satisfaction then at least to a point where he can be held directly responsible for a shambles like yesterday.
"We need more players," he said. "We have brought Wayne Bridge to the club but maybe we need five more to complement the ones we have.
"Bringing players in during January is not easy but it is evident to everybody that number is probably the minimum we need.
"I recognise some of the players we would like to bring in are maybe unobtainable. But it is early yet and we will pursue targets we think will help us."
The problem for Hughes is that an increasing number of City supporters have given their own verdict.
Dubious about the Welshman to start with because he was so heavily associated with United as a player, they are less prepared to tolerate teething troubles and as the disgruntled masses headed for the exits, coming to terms with a home hammering by a team battling to avoid a return to League One.
But the way City crumbled and Hughes' own assessment was pretty damning, considering it highlighted deficiencies that should not exist at any level of the game.
"We need a physical presence," said Hughes. "We have to match the workrate of the opposition. If you don't do that you won't win games no matter what level the opposition are at.
"You need leaders. You need people who drive the game and affect it in a positive way. You need bravery to get on the ball.
"Nottingham Forest showed more desire and energy in their play.
"I am just being honest. I am not telling anyone anything they didn't see themselves.
"I won't defend it because it is indefensible.
"I have known the frailties in the team from day one and have pointed them out to the owners and chairman.
"They understand where we are. It is not as though this has just happened overnight."
With Shaun Wright-Phillips sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury and the fitness of Stephen Ireland and Robinho still causing concern, City might be lacking their creative element for a while.
At least Hughes should have the trio back for the resumption of City's UEFA Cup campaign in February, which now represents the only chance of silverware this season.
Providing he lasts that long, Hughes needs to make sure that trophy quest does not end as abjectly as this one did and without the kind of gross errors Pablo Zabaleta and, most inexplicably, Dietmar Hamann made to gift Forest their deserved success.

Or are you the reds under the bed. The lose of another manager will only serve to make us a laughing stock yet again. Instant fixes do not exist they quickly break down as seen throughout football.
We may be struggling at the moment but we need stability not blind stupidity and panic.

We have a run of 5 games coming up now that we have to take at least 9 points from (Pompey, Wigan, Newcastle, Boro, Stoke). If we don't then we're into the nightmare sequence of Liverpool, Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, the Rags etc etc.
Unfortunately our most potent attacking weapon is now out of action for those 5 games, and whenever SWP is absent we look about as threatening as a water pistol at a strategic nuclear missile sale.
Hughes will need to replace him, hopefully with Bellamy, or if not Lennon, as Shaunny is our only attacker with any real pace. Then we'll just need a target man, a box to box midfielder and 2 centre halves!

what also worries me is the calibre if player we are linked with - parker? bellamy? are we just building a mid table mediocrity team for the future? looks like.
keep zab, swp, robinho, komp, bridge. onuoha...the rest can take a running jump.

Hughes is gonna blow all our transfur money on secund rate players like Wayne bidge from Chelsea, if hes not good enough for Chelsea then why should he good enough for us.
HUGHES OUT!..We need to have a demo against him at the next game.

To those who keep on about Hughes' record with Blackburn, who really cares now? None of it has translated to City. FA Cup Semi final, and 6th spot in the league: so what? Maybe some people forget the past and need a history lesson?
Alan Ball taking perenial relgation candidates Southampton to record league placing 10th at the time: GENIUS.
Frank Clark promoting Forest (ironically after yesterday's game) from old Div 1 then finishing 3rd in Premier League, also quarter final of '96 UEFA Cup from memory (losing to winners Bayern): GENIUS.
Joe Royle won an FA Cup with Everton with an average squad. Before Pompey won last season, the only team outside the top 4 to win the Cup in the Premier League era: GENIUS
ALL OF THESE MEN WHO OVERACHIEVED BEFORE COMING TO CITY HAD BETTER MANAGERIAL CVs THAN HUGHES.
BUT ALL OF THEM ALSO GOT US RELEGATED. THEY ALSO HAD TO DEAL WITH INHERITED PLAYERS, THEY ALSO HAD LIMITED RESOURCES. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WITH HUGHES RIGHT NOW IS HE HAS MONEY TO SPEND. BUT HE HASN'T MADE MUCH CASE FOR KEEPING HIS JOB LATELY
Speaking of which, we used to play some pretty attractive attacking football under Horton and couldn't defend. Maybe we should give him an open cheque book and give him the money he didnt back then when we sacked him. I always felt he was hard done.
Or hell, Peter Reid is apparently unhappy in Thailand from accounts, we can bring him back as player-manager and he will add more bite in midfield than Gelsen or Hamann even at his age. Give him the cheque book he never had.
For the record, i think we should keep Hughes till the end of the season and hope we don't get relegated. But the writing is on the wall, the grand 5yr plan has had another false start and Hughes will be gone end of season, what's another year to wait? I'm used to it by now.
Portsmouth Blue - I love your idea about not letting Hughes sign anymore players if he isn't sacked and make him manage and make-do with what we have so the next guy doesnt have to spend a season getting rid of his garbage like Bellamy and RSC in a year's time.
Garry Cook - make use of yourself, get on the phone with Roberto Mancini's agent Giorgio De Giorgis this week and thrash out a deal for July 1 (if not before) before Chelsea get him.
Our revised goals this season: avoid relgation, avoid yellow and red cards and hope we qualify through the back door into Europe again.
And seriously, to those who even think we have a chance to win the UEFA Cup, wake up and maybe watch some of the other teams still left in the competition. We were saying "we have the FA Cup" after the debacle at Brighton and that is gone. Do you seriously think a rampant Milan or Hamburg (who smashed Aston Villa) or Deportivo won't beat us? Our best hope is to go out of the Cup to have a sole focus on staying up.

The simple facts are that of the players at City's the most consistent performers, and the best performers have been brought in as Hughes buys. As for motivating players, improved performances by the likes of Garrido, and most notably Ireland, for me, do not call into question Hughes' abilities to motivate those who WANT to be motivated. I think what is plain to see is that there are players at the club who remain from previous regimes who are neither as good as they think they are, nor are they good enough for where Hughes wants to take us.
Anyone calling for Hughes to be sacked clearly understands little about running a football club, or running a successful football club. I'll say it again...IF HUGHES GOES NOW, WHO COMES IN?
Hughes is the best young manager around. He will get it right. He has worked at some of the most successful clubs in the last 20 years, he has MOTIVATED Wales, to their best performances for half a century, he MOTIVATED Blackburn to two appearances in Europe, with next to no money to spend.
What is happening at City now was always going to happen this season anyway. In fact, even though it is hypothetical, I would even speculate it would be us propping up the league had Hughes not brought in the players he had.
What was clear yesterday was the following. A lack of a leader on the pitch. A lack of communication in defence, which includes Hart. Hart is a great shot-stopper, but as the old adage goes, if a goalie isn't a great shot-stopper, what they doing in net? These are fundamental flaws in the side at the moment. Hughes is spot on, we need people in there to add a presence, because at the moment, we dont have the personnel for that.
What was also apparent was us. The fans. The atmosphere was woeful yesterday. Forest were up for it on the pitch and in the stands. An humbling defeat was inevitable from the first five minutes. Its alright calling for "the plank" to receive no more money, and to get out now, but I sincerely believe anyone who truly believes this to be the answer for Manchester City, given 33 years of getting rid of "planks", is the only sort of "plank" this club needs shot of.

There is a level of workrate and professionalism that many of the City team from last season are unwilling or unable to reach, they must go.
Dunne, Richards, Ball, Hamann, Elano are the guilty parties, anyone who would rather keep these players over Hughes need their head examining.

The players who have played well this season have been his signings (kompany, robinho and swp), the only other player has been ireland and as everyone will agree he's the most improved player in the league, why doesn't hughes and his coaching staff get any credit for that....
