DANIEL Sturridge came off the bench to rescue a point for City against Blackburn in dramatic style.
With the Blues trailing by two goals from Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts, Sturridge first scored with a volley and then lay on an injury time equaliser for Robinho.
The Blues started strongly and had two fine chances early on.
First Felipe Caicedo failed to snaffle a close-range opportunity as he lunged at a Vincent Kompany knock-down - before Robinho missed a close range header with an open goal gaping.
That was the best chance City created during the entire opening period, even if Kompany, Stephen Ireland and Elano all had pot-shots from long-range with little success.
For their part, Rovers existed on scraps, with Brett Emerton’s deep crosses looking like their best route to goal.
As Blackburn dropped to the foot of the table before kick-off it is presumably not the survival strategy their faithful supporters have in mind.
However, it bore fruit in stoppage-time as City’s sloppyness in possession offered Emerton the chance to drive the ball into the visitors’ box.
Response
Roberts turned smartley and McCarthy did the rest, presenting Hughes with a familiar sinking feeling as he delivered his interval team-talk.
There was no immediate response from the visitors as Emerton and Andre Ooijer tested Joe Hart but Shaun Wright-Phillips then went close to levelling when his back header to Elano’s deep cross bounced to safety off a post.
As the first hour proved, creating chances is no problem at all to City, converting them is usually pretty straightforward as well.
It is the lack of defensive nous that is currently preventing them punching anything like their weight at present and for all the talk of Santa Cruz and Craig Bellamy, it is the rearguard reinforcements Hughes makes that will be crucial to City’s improvement and his own job prospects.
The visitors’ commitment to attack and increasing desperation for a goal forced Rovers backwards. Wright-Phillips fired wide, then Robinho curled a shot into Robinson’s chest from 20 yards.
That Hughes then turned to Darius Vassell and Sturridge to salvage the game 20 minutes from time was a damning assessment of £19million former record signing Jo’s ability to turn a game.
But it was Blackburn who scored next after more defensive indecision allowed Roberts to head over Hart.
With defeat looming, Sturridge stepped up his game. First he volleyed home crisply before showing strength and skill to set up Robinho, whose instant control and smart finish earned the point.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

Another rancid away catastrophe against ROCK BOTTOM opposition! How many more horrendous performances are we expected to watch?!
The last 20 mins of the game we played with 9 men because Dire Darius and Woeful Micah are such liabilities but Super Sturridge is the only class Striker we have..... he transformed the game! Dire Darius did nothing YET AGAIN and should be sacked on New Years Day - An utter disgrace even as a sub! Micah was out of position yet again and allowed Roberts to score.
Another 2 points lost given the opposition but we were very fortunate to get a point!
I expect - in fact demand at least 6 new signings in the next week.....
To be honest I wouldn't care if Hughes was sacked now - and Wenger was brought in (if only). I have backed the man but this was another dire dire away shambles - absolutely dire! The guy cannot wriggle out of how awful he has been in his half a season at the club - the most expensive manager in the history of football and he has failed miserably to deliver!
You better get your act together Hughes, Defeats and last minute points againt Abysmal opposition week after week is unacceptable! Hull, Newcastle, Bolton, Middlesboro, WBA, Blackburn, Wigan, Fulham and Brighton ....Laughable!!

I hope any new signings are warriors - we've got enough 'artists' to undercoat Barton Bridge.

It was shocking to see our performance for 88 minutes, and I don't have the energy to rant on about criticism right now.
But i will give credit to the boys for finally showing some BALLS, and coming back from the dead when they could have just folded. This is the kind of performance that can build morale, and people shouldn't underestimate this.
There is a LOT of work to be done, admitted. But we have taken 4 from 6 pts over the Christmas period, and moved up 5 spots in the table with the transfer window about to open (and we can't have been any worse today since maybe the game vs Everton last year). Things could be a lot worse, but things are better than this time last week after the WBA game.
So much for coming home 2 wks for the holidays, its gone 5.30am Sydney time, and I am mentally drained after this. I'm glad I'll be back in a friendlier time zone for the Forest game next weekend.
Glad 2008 is over, look forward to 2009........

He is constantly embarassed by strong, quick players ( Roberts, Drogba, Camara, Bent need I go on !!!) am I the only one seeing this ? We will never be a top four team whilst he remains in the team. I'm not being negative, merely constructively pointing out our glaring weakness at the back which I pray will be addressed in the transfer window. I do think we will be fine this season and there is plenty to be optimistic about but successful teams are built from the back and we have to start there. Come on you Blues.

But these are the kinds of results that are the making of teams. What a battling finale, what a mini-performance from Studge! I'm so proud of them. Didn't think they had it in them.
On a more downbeat note. If anyone watched the game on Fox Sports, the English commentator - on hearing our chants of "We've got Robinho, we've got Robinho" after equalising, responded with a very nasty and sarcastic comment of, "Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! We've got Robinho!!!". My God, the tide's really turning against us with some people. They're actually hoping we self-destruct. What jealousy! But that just spurs me on as a City fan, to rub their faces in it when we finally start winning things.

I did not see a point coming there, it felt like Wembley or Spurs to me all over again and like the City of old and we were not great but I feel a damn sight better having hammered Hull 5-1 and picked up a point here. I wrote after Bolton because we were garbage that day but this is a different situation. Roll on January.

We continue to lack leadership and edge.
Need to get two hard men in.
Move for Van Bommel at Bayern if still available for Euro experience.
Still, we found some fight and can head into 2009 far more upbeat than we were one week ago.
