The Brazilian midfielder was left kicking his heels at home after a bust-up with boss Mark Hughes.
City's chief was said to be angry with the 27-year-old's UEFA Cup performance in Santander on Thursday night.
And he finally ran out of patience with Sven Goran-Eriksson's £8m capture when he put in a lacklustre effort in training on Saturday.
Witnesses say words were exchanged and the squad named without last season's top scorer in it.
Club officials were also said to be suspicious when fellow Brazil star Jo trained but then phoned in sick and missed the coach to the Midlands. He later arrived under his own steam.
Injury
Robinho, described as a brother by Elano, missed the game through a nagging ankle injury that was aggravated in the game at Santander.
It is the second time that Elano has fallen foul of the manager this season having given a television interview complaining of his lack of game time that angered many at Eastlands. He had been left out of the side for a short spell - two games - at the beginning of November.
After that the two men met in Hughes' office and the manager seemed to have offered a significant olive branch when Elano was named on the bench at Hull and subsequently selected from the start for the European games against Paris and Real Racing Club and the Premier League clash with Everton.
But he failed to shine in any of them and unless he has a change of attitude he looks destined to leave in the January window with Spanish side Espanyol and Italians Lazio heading the queue for his services.
Elano, whose previous coach at Shakhtar Donetsk is believed to have phoned City to warn them the Brazilian was only happy when playing, has started 16 league and cup games this season and scored four times.
Israeli international Ben Haim also found himself out in the cold at the Hawthorns with England Under-21 international Nedum Onuoha given the role of understudy to Micah Richards and Richard Dunne.
What do you think? Have your say.

As in any workforce, to have any chance of success you get rid of the disruptive staff, not the manager.

With the skill & ability of Elano he should put in the effort of Stephen Ireland or Shaun Wright-Phillips. Jo has also been unbelievably poor too...he can't run, shoot, dribble or head...& only cost £19 million...NOT HUGHES BUY THOUGH.
I'm backing Mark to come good. City have lost games in the last minute to Liverpool, Everton & WBA...the last 2 games due to Richards & Dunne going to sleep!

Elano on the other hand has been dismal for over 12 months and will probably leave for a fraction of his value (like Anelka did). The side does not need Elano, it needs hard working battlers because we already have Ireland and Robinho as Attacking midfielders...if Elano cannot understand that the team comes before him then good riddance. He has been our BOX OFFICE star for a season and he is not happy that he has slipped down the pecking order....

In his post match inteview Hughes clearly informed the world that he thought this wasn't the right type of game for Elano. Yeah really, even the pundits on TV were questioning why he hadn't played him and that it was a game that need Elano to open it up.
I can't see Elano leaving because I fully expect Hughes to be out this week.
I think Hughes has used several players as scapegoats for all that has gone wrong. Even his own purchase TBH.
Also, when Hughes talks he always uses the 'Royal We' when asked a personal question, who does he think he is ? Royalty ?.
Please remove Hughes before he does City any more damage.
I've changed my nickname too, because I really think now it's time for being serious and like the late, great Viv Stanshall in 'Bad Blood', I'm really 'miffed'.

If Hughes is to leave the club, the rotting core of players like Elano and Jo need to be moved as well.
