CITY boss Mark Hughes is looking for victory against Paris Saint Germain so the Blues can top their UEFA Cup group.

The Blues must recover from Sunday's derby defeat, while the French side also suffered a loss at the weekend, going down by a single goal to Rennes.

Hughes can relax in the knowledge his side have clinched a place in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, but he wants to finish the last two matches - they play Racing Santander in Spain in a fortnight - in style.

Hughes said: "There is a prize to be had. If we are to finish top of the group that is to our benefit. Hopefully that will mean an easier draw in the last 32.

"If we can get a positive result from this match that should be enough, and I feel we can make chances at home against any team.

"PSG are a good side. They need a decent result but it just depends on what significance they place on this competition.

"They have changed their team in previous rounds and protected their senior players for league games."

Paris St Germain coach Paul Le Guen will field a number of fringe players in the game, even though his side’s hopes of qualifying for the last 32 are hanging by a thread.

Le Guen freely admits his number-one priority this season is seeing PSG finish as high up the Ligue 1 table as possible.

As a result, he has played weakened teams in Europe and in the domestic cups so far this campaign and he is sticking to his guns ahead of Wednesday’s Group A clash at Eastlands.

Point

PSG, bottom of the standings with just a point from their opening two games, need a result at City to kick-start their faltering group campaign and Le Guen will go in search of a win with a host of back-up players involved.

“Our programme coming up is very hard and very exacting,” he said.

“It is a very difficult period but we are getting through it quite well. We are holding our own. For Wednesday, I am going to see.

“You have to tend to the little details but we should certainly be making a turnover of players.”

A full-strength PSG lost 1-0 at Rennes in Ligue 1 on Sunday, although they had enough chances to beat a team who have not been defeated since August.

Le Guen was heartened by his side’s performance at the Route de Lorient but he saw midfield dynamo Stephane Sessegnon come off with a thigh compaint that rules him out of the City clash.

Fellow midfielder Clement Chantome is also missing from the 18-man squad that boarded the flight to England as he is still struggling with a back injury.

PSG were disappointed to hear the French league had turned down the club’s request to put Saturday’s match against Le Mans back 24 hours.

It would have given the squad more time to recover from their exertions at Eastlands ahead of next Thursday’s crunch home tie against FC Twente in the UEFA Cup.

This decision will have strengthened Le Guen’s determination to blood some of the squad’s reserve-teamers at Eastlands.

That means the likes of Peguy Luyindula, Mateja Kezman, Fabrice Pancrate and Gregory Bourillon should start, while Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly should be rested.

After opening the group campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Schalke, the capital club threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Racing Santander last week.

“We must cope better in our weaker moments, like we had against Rennes and Santander,” said midfielder Jerome Rothen.
