Manchester City

Schalke 0 City 2: Player ratings

8 HART: missed out in Germany last week but brilliant here especially in the first half

7: RICHARDS: shifted out to the right flank where he seems happiest and was solid

7 DUNNE: no alarms for the skipper who marshalled the defence with calm effectiveness

8 KOMPANY: may say that he prefers to play defensive midfield but shone brightly in back four

6 GARRIDO: off injured at the break after a relatively busy and tricky opening 45 minutes

7 WRIGHT-PHILLIPS: couple of runs of note but one of the quieter, hard working nights

8 IRELAND: Didn’t dazzle early on but finished strongly and scored one and had one disallowed

7 HAMANN: booed for his Munich connection but all the old wiles are still clearly effective

7 VASSELL: without crowd on his back he settled down well to play an effective role

7 STURRIDGE: sometimes looks too emotional on the pitch but no doubting his immense promise

8 BENJANI: Johnny on the spot for the goal but strong and purposeful in his work all night

SUBSTITUTES: BALL (for Garrido 46) – welcome return for experienced defender who may stay in - 7

JO (for Benjani 84)

NOT USED: Schmeichel, Ben Haim, Evans, Logan, and Berti

BATTLE OF THE BOSSES: Hughes – sprang a shock by moving Vincent Kompany into the back four and got his selection and tactics spot on; Rutten sent out his strongest possible side in attempt to make sure 04 qualified but was outfoxed.

REFEREE: Alexandru Tudor (Romania) – let the game flow well and not card happy -

8 ATTENDANCE: 54,142

SCHALKE: Neuer, Westermann, Bordon (Howedes 73), Rakitic (Asamoah 63), Jones, Farfan, Rafinha, Altintop (Sanchez 80), Kuranyi, Pander, and Engelaar. Not used: Schober, Kobiashvili, Ernst and Zambrano

Great result!
Well done to all the lads.

Kompany was outstanding in defence. Was ver organised and assertive.

Ireland was tireless yet again.

Benjani led the line well (always offsie though) lol.

Onwards and upwards.
Manure he we come!

I've been a critic in the past but surely Ireland has to be a 10 tonight? I was so impressed with the team performance tonight, we looked as good as i've seen us in a long time....just so comfortable all over the pitch.
I'd like to see us go on and win the group now.
Hamman looks tailor-made for these euro games - just his pace.
Fantastic. Bring on Rooney's mob.

I'm at a loss to understand Chris Bailey's comment regarding Michael Ball. "came on for Garrido and may stay in".

Garrido has improved significantly over the last 4 games and has always been/will always be a better player than Ball who was crap at Everton, worse at Rangers and absolute tosh since joining us.

THOUGH IT WAS I TOUGH DECISION TONIGHT MY M.O.T.M WOULD GO TO DUNNE. AFTER ALL THE STICK HE HAS TAKEN THIS SEASON HE HAS COME BACK FIGHTING AND PLAYED GREAT.
FOR ME HE GOT 10 OUT OF 10 TONIGHT AS DID IRELAND AND HART FOLLOWED VERY CLOSELY BY THE REST OF THE TEAM. 9'S ALL ROUND.
AND NOW FOR A PEICE OF HUMBLE PIE.
MR, HUGHES YOU PLAYED A BLINDER TONIGHT. YOU GOT EVERYTHING SPOT-ON. WELL DONE, KEEP THIS GOING AND YOU WILL SOON CONVERT US ALL.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO CONGRATULATE ELANO ON THE BIRTH OF HIS CHILD, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HE HAD. AND BEFORE I GET DAFT REPLIES TELLING ME HE HAD A BABY, I KNOW. !!!( BOY OR GIRL ),
NOW ITS TIME TO ENJOY. YEEHAAAA.

Think you might find that Garrido went off injured.

I might be wrong but the inference is that he might not be fit for sunday but lets see what they say in the morning after assessing him.

agree with Denton, the implied dig at Garrido is completely bobbins, Garrido has been exellent recently and I cannot remember the last time anyone said that about Ball

Great performance tonight though boys

Hart, Dunne, Kompany, Ireland & Hamann were 9, the rest 8. And if there were a .5 mark then I would say Hart deserved a 9.5 cos he was immense tonight.

Also, credit to MH who got the tactics spot on.

What a fabulous performance! I even saw Berti warming up in the first half with Ball.

Unfortunately, it was Ball who replaced Garrido at half-time, but he did ok.

The momentum has continued from the Arsenal game and barring injuries, and with Robbi fit for Sunday we are on a roll.

On a night like this it is impossible to pick an M.O.M. but where are the people now who wanted Dunney, Hart, Garrido, etc out in January?

We don't need the likes of them, not now, not ever.

I appreciate the right to an individuals opinion, but surely moronic statements, clearly demonstrating that they know absolutely nothing about football, should be filtered out.

Ireland needs to be dropped. No one else is getting a look-in at MOM these days!

You say Dunne marshalled the defence with calm effectiveness, which is true.
But then you ranked him the same as Richards, who nearly lost the plot completely and was lucky not to get sent off, and less than Kompany.

Makes no sense at all

Great team performance, Mark Hughes is having a good week and the players are doing him proud. Thought Sturridge was a constant threat and Kompany was terrific all night. Dunney appears to have found his form again and Hart was rock solid.

Hopefully Robi and Zab are right to go on Sunday and we can cap a great week by sticking it up old bacon face. Congratulations to Elano and family and hope to see him involved against the swampies.

As the experts on Channel 5 said - City controlled the game. To be pedantic Dunne was caught out early int he first half but was saved by a very good stop by Hart (why doesn't he catch crosses?). I thought Ireland was immense - that man's energy is unbelievable. Kompany looked very accomplished at the back. Yes, Sturridge has an arrogance about him - but that's no bad thing for a forward, shame he didn't score. SWP did an amazing amount of work. This was City at their best - some fantastic blocks in defence and good closing down of the opposition. And we won without Robinho!! Let's keep it going, guys.

Terrific result tonight. My M.o.M definitely Kompany. Thought he was absolutely superb, but the rest of the lads were fantastic too. Hope Garrido is fit to face the rags on Sunday. Six out of six again this season.

Excellent performance, result and managerial tactics tonight. Great to see City in command and looking strong and organised.

Ireland & Sturridge shone for me, but everyone deserves 8s at least.

Watched on TV and the atmosphere sounded fantastic. Great singing Blues.

Instanbul maybe we really are coming.

I think it's safe to say that Dunnie's Player of the year monopoly is seriously under threat - Steven Ireland has surpassed everyone's expectations this season and even at this early stage he surely has it in the bag.

Everyone was on his back last season and he's turned out as a complete world beater; maybe we should get on Michael Johnson's back and see if it has the same effect!

what about dunnies new baby, he could start a youth team soon :P

Ireland was awesome, he should have got 10/10. Tackling back and popping up all over the pitch, great runs into the box too and he got his reward with the goal. Schalke are no mugs and this was an accompished euro performance from the team as a whole.

Good to see Vassell putting a shift in, I reckon he'll score in the derby again on Sunday!

A tough week is nearly over. 2 down, 1 to go, COME ON YOU BLUES, stay strong and Ram it right back down that scouse morons throat. Completely agree that "The Buissness" looks the buissness at CB, and would be tempted to keep him there. A spell on the bench and a little competition might be what Richards needs to teach him a little humility. Unfortunately until we get a DM at least as good as Kompany I dont think we could spare him.

What a great night out, and such a good atmosphere in the Veltins Arena, if you were a City-fan that is.

Hart solid (brilliant save 2nd half, doubt he knew about it). Back four hardly got into trouble (with Kompany at the back the building-up is much better). Midfield looked a bit slow at the start, but controlled things completely 2nd half (Hamann indeed is an old fox getting so many freekicks on his side). Sturridge again showed great potential, but I fear for his attitude. Ireland? Well, the guy just IS Superman.
