With a poor game limping towards half time, Ireland continued his fine form by breaking the deadlock.
Brazilian star Robinho then doubled the lead with a delightful chipped finish before Daniel Sturridge won and then scored a late penalty.
Arsenal's William Gallas did not travel with the rest of the squad after making critical comments about the team in midweek and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia wore the armband instead.
The France defender questioned their fighting spirt and also spoke of squabbling behind the scenes and it is understood he was omitted from the team as boss Arsene Wenger was dismayed by the player’s comments.
City almost took the lead in the 27th minute after a flowing move, which was started by Shaun Wright-Phillips.
He sent Darius Vassell clear and Benjani got a touch to his cross at the back post, only to deflect his effort wide.
Arsenal almost took the lead from the free-kick with Joe Hart - who had made a quick recovery from an ankle injury - beating away Samir Nasri’s shot.
The ball broke to Nicklas Bendtner and he cleverly hooked it back to Alex Song. He was clear on goal but sent his effort wide from close range.
Edge
There was a tense, nervous edge to this game, which meant little entertainment for the supporters as half-time approached, but just before the break Ireland took advantage of a mix-up between Gael Clichy and Mikael Silvestre to put the home side ahead.
He clipped the ball over Almunia to give City the boost they required going into the second half.
City extended their lead with a magnificent goal from Robinho in the 57th minute after some superb work from Wright-Phillips.
The England midfielder won the ball off Robin Van Persie in the middle of the park before releasing a perfect through ball for Robinho.
The Brazilian showed a cool head as Almunia advanced to lob the ball over the goalkeeper for his ninth goal of the season.
Robinho then sent a close-range header wide of the post before finding the next again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
The Brazilian was beginning to run riot and almost made it 3-0 three minutes later when he latched on to a ball from substitute Elano.
He took it around Almunia only for Johan Djourou to clear his effort off the line.
Van Persie then found the net after clipping the ball out of Hart’s hand but it was disallowed.
Sturridge completed the rout in stoppage time from the penalty spot after being upended by Djourou to add to Arsenal’s misery.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

Excellent refereeing for a change.
Hope Robinho will be alright
Is this same Dunne and the same defence we have been seeing of late?

Still though, why is Benjani out there? He offers nothing, still hasn't beat a defender yet and didn't have a single shot (except the one he wiffed).
Danny came on for him and immediatley took control. Could Benji have gotten in the position Danny did to win the penalty? I don't think so.

I think we need a left back but credit where credit's due - Garrido's improving....

I challenge even the most pessimistic and maudlin posters here to challenge my take on this game. In two word: flippin' fantastic!
The 3-0 scoreline was absolutely deserved. I even have to salute MH's weird selection. Yes, SWP CAN cut it in central midfield. His superb effort to make the second goal vindicates MH and even almost goes so far as to label him as some kind of tactical genius. Seriously - we mauled the gunners here. Exquisite stuff.
I'm over the proverbial moon over this great all round performance. Looking forward greatly to the trip up to Gelsenkirchen on Thursday. And bring on the rags. I have to admit it fellow blues: I'm getting all giddy - and I hope the rest of you loyal blues are too!

He is dire -
SI Superb - SWP ROB, ZAB, EXCEPTIONAL..
I know critics will have a go at me yet again, But i have a point here when I hear an handful of fans singing ARE YOU KEEGAN IN DISGUISE launched at MH.
I did not participate in this...but I could see where they where coming from!!
Well done our beloved BLUES!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
I've said it before, this guy is one of the best stand-up comedians on the circuit today. He should be guest-hosting Have I Got News For You!
I know Arsenal were there for the taking today, considering their current problems, but that was sheer class by City - sheer class!
Now, let's get this defence of ours sorted, because as the Premier League's second top scorers with 29, that is the only thing that's holding us back.

Still not a big fan of Vassell but he has now played in 2 games and we have won one and drawn one so who am I to judge. Thought SWP was excellent today and Robinho in the second half was superb again. Hope the injury clears up before next Sunday!
His goal was stunning! He could have has a hat trick again and we could have scored six again. Someone will get tonked this season at COMS.
Stephen Ireland continues to perform like he is the best player in the league and for me if he continues like this he could have the same influence for us that Lampard has for Chelsea.
Benjani continues to frustrate by being constantly offside!
Overall much better and Hughes gets a stay of execution for now. We must move on now though. Its no good winning one game then losing four!

Truly my friends, your appalling efforts at spreading negativity on this forum this evening were the poorest I've seen for a long time. Do keep quiet and wait at least until we've had a bad day at the office.
You're quite seriously making abject fools of yourselves. Less generous souls than I would laugh you into oblivion.

I said out loud before the match that Ireland would score first. Pity I'm not a betting man. And to all the negative (rag) posters...This game was a WARM-UP for the derby.

They will find something to moan about and I'll bet it's about MH.
Just back, superb counter attacking performance. Welcome back RD and MR if you could play like that every week our defensive troubles would be a thing of the past. I think Garrido is growing in stature at LB. I think it also makes my point that if the players perform then the tactics are correct. I'm licking my lips at the thought of someone like Diarra playing where SWP played today and SWP moving back to the wing Vassell works hard but he just isn't good enough. SI man of the match. Things are looking good for Thursday and the derby.
