Manchester City

Hughes' Mark of trust

Shaun Wright-Phillips and Mark Hughes
CITY chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak is ready to splash the cash in January and it will be Mark Hughes who spends it.

The Blues' supremo has been non-plussed by recent reports suggesting that the manager is already under pressure.

He is also irritated at whispers that he, or owner Sheikh Mansour, will somehow be involved in the identification of players to purchase.

Al Mubarak dined with the manager and his family at their Manchester home on Saturday night when the two discussed a full range of subjects appertaining to the team, its evolution and the Carrington training centre.

Hughes then made a presentation to the board ahead of the 2-1 defeat against Spurs that left City in 13th place in the Premier League.

Khaldoon sang the praises of Hughes who took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson in the summer and who will have complete control of who comes into, and goes out of the dressing room.

"We are calm and under control and we (the board) have the highest regard for Mark," he said after the board meeting.

"I am personally committed to Mark and I am committed to the partnership between Garry (Cook), Mark and myself.

"This is a winning team that is going through a learning curve right now. January is going to be an interesting opportunity for Mark to improve the team. This is a ten-year dynasty that we are building and we are only in the first two months.

"Thankfully I do not read the newspapers that are saying he is under pressure but I find it incredible. Just today I am told that there are reports that we are associated with two different coaches and that we are about to sign them!

"It is rubbish. The bottom line is that we are committed to Mark and to this team.

"Mark is the man who makes the football decisions. We are here to support and make financial decisions, but we are not here to teach Mark what to do. We trust him and we are going to support him.

"I think people will see in January that we have good foundations in place in the team, we have a good coach and that we will be upgrading in terms of players. Hopefully the results will then come."

Who should City buy in January? Have your say.

So Hughes is safe then and everything is looking rosy for the future. Or is it? Reports in The Sun this morning say that Robi/Jo/Elano have lost faith in Hughes. If true, then surely it is the beginning of the end as no manager can survive when he has lost the respect of the players. This is what happened at Spurs with Ramos.

Wise words.

If I was to replace anyone it would be Garry Cook. One name we all screamed no at was Peter Kenyon. But maybe we need someone who has supported an infrastructure like Chelsea break the top 4.

We have an owner who haas necver done this before.

A marketing manager from Nike who has no idea.

And a manager who's highest achievement, is the same as the position that got Sven the sack!

I would not sack Hughes. There is no one out there. He has inherited a side and had no real control over summer transfers.

Mind, We had 3 times as many points this time last year under Sven

WELL DONE THE BOARD, THAT SHOULD KEEP THE LEMONS AT THE MIRROR AND SUN OFF OUR BACKS. THINGS COULD BE A LOT, LOT BETTER, BUT WE HAVE TO GO WITH HUGHES, WE HAVE MONEY TO BUY TOP, TOP PLAYERS, SO KEEP THE FAITH. COME ON YOU BLUES. P.S. WE WILL WIN ON SUNDAY, TRUST ME.

Preposterously, speculation has gathered apace about Mark Hughes’ future just 6 months into his tenure so I'm very pleased to read these words. The club needs stability. Even the best managers make mistakes: Wenger, Mourinho, Scolari, and yes, Ferguson too. Hughes hasn’t made many mistakes and to sack Hughes now would be foolish in the extreme. No successful club continual sacks managers with regularity and Hughes has inherited a misbalanced squad, having had little time to strengthen it. With the uncertainty over the club’s ownership remaining right up until the very last week of the transfer window, Mark Hughes did not have very long to strengthen his squad. When he did spend some money he has spent it very well indeed. Hughes brought in Vincent Kompany. It doesn’t matter whose idea it was to sign Robinho, he was signed with Mark Hughes’ blessing and on his watch. Our squad is paper thin, and Mark Hughes needs to be given time to strengthen it.

One thing of great benefit to Manchester City is that Khaldoon Al Mubarak and the club's backers will bring some of their Middle-Eastern cultural insight to the management of the club. MCFC has been dogged by macho management of the most industrial kind. Khaldoon Al Mubarak will be much wiser. The intelligence of Mark Hughes will be much appreciated and he will be given time. The newspapers and fans who are impatient will hold no sway over these men.

We all understand why City have struggled for three decades. It is because the club went at life with a massive inferiority complex and the patience of a Jack Russell. In reality, underneath it all, and through the worst times, the club proved that it has the soul of a lion. Now, for the first time, that great soul is met by great wisdom in the management and boardroom.

This is the dawn of the most exciting phase in the club's history. Keep the faith.

Oh my god!!! Khaldoon dont do it! You may as well give it to a vagrant on the streets of Manchester, cos he would waste it like Hughes is going to. Let him go NOW! before we're well out of the game, by January we could be out of Europe & then we'll get no one, yesterday was awfull, we could of been 3 up before Fernandes was sent off, but because Hughes is tactically inept we lost the game. HUGHES start with Hamman! Its not rocket science! Frustrated!!!! Anyway not long to go, he's already had the dreaded vote of confidence this morning. W'hoo!!!!

Richard Dunne is without question one of the best defenders in Europe and would walk into Real Madrid,Barcelonas or any team you care to mention starting line up ,its everyone else whos got it wrong. What do we know .Hughes is right, play him all the time !

Oh no! And I was hoping we were going to be as big as Newcastle.

He's not up to it. Bring back Pearce, least he wasn't an ex-Rag.

Sacking Hughes is not the answer, looking over the season upto now this has got be Dunnies worst for us upto present and it seems to me that Micah Richards does not look interested one bit,he has lost 2 yards of pace since he was injured so where last season his pace got him out of trouble at lot of times this season its not,We also have to look at when we were taken over it was the last day of the transfer window so you cannot expect us to take the top 4 on when we he has not had chance to go and buy some big names, lets stick by MH and give him and the tem our full backing.

the rumours about the Brazilians are a concern. There's an internet rumour about some altercation yesterday after the match between Bowen and Elano. Also, I assume the player in a tracksuit who Robbie went over to as part of his goal celebration was Elano (I was on opposite side of ground and couldn't be 100% sure; 99.999%).

We've got the worst back four in da league. We're a long way off 40 points.I'm going to wait and see what our rich owners do to solve City shoetcomings and whoever they get rid of is fine by me.I believe six new faces, seven if Hughes is gone, are required to get City back on track. This time I'm not letting it worry me.

who has said that there is unrest in the camor are the sun putting two and two together and coming up with 5. because anybody can see elano isnt playing regular. and jo is either sub, or being subbed in most games. which by the way he's been playing comes as no suprise. i think its great to hear the chairman come out and say this. lets hope he can change it round. by xmas.

at the match yesterday and was dismayed at some of mark hughes decisions. first playing an unfit vassel who in my view played at the detriment of wright Philips who must be played in his favoured position. second when gelson did that challenge and got booked i said too my mate i would take him off or he will be sent off and he was. third when he was sent off he dalled before taking off the week link vasseli and not putting on haman. then at half time he had no idea how to change anything subs kept warming up and sitting down all through the second half when the team needed leadership our manager was lacking. its alright our chairman saying work in progress but we have three very hard games coming up and we could be plumb bottom Saturday and well adrift after united so i am worried. we have played great football some of the best ive seen for years but the titanic sunk when many said it was unsinkable so our manager needs to step up to the plate and quick stop making errors of judgment play elano who has become a scape goat who makes robby play better and don't play round pegs in square holes or the bleak mid winter will get even bleaker for all of us.

Quite right too. This club has consistently sacked managers over & over and is why we have never had a sniff of success. Our biggest problem is that 3 players in Hart, Richards & Dunne bellyached about being given big contracts and its these players who consistently have been letting the team down. We can do something about Dunne & Richards straight away by replacing them with Ben Haim & Onuha.

Well if the reports in the Sun say our samba boys are unhappy it must be true !!!.. Get rid of Richard Dunne not the manager the best thing about yesterday is he will get a 3 match ban !! Kompany will play centre half and hopefully he will not play for us again.. This is the player of the year 4 seasons running, I had no idea how bad we must have been over the past 4 years !!

I agree that once a Manager has lost the dressing room then he's doomed, but if I were you I wouldn't believe the Sun for one minute. It's a newspaper which thrives on conjecture and alarm designed only to boost it's sales.

I notice that the Times is a bit more measured, saying that it believes that Highes has the support of most if not all of the senior players. I would think that this is likely to be more accurate.

The reality is also likely to be that the Boys from Brazil are not happy about playing in a losing team in the terrible weather conditions that we have seen over the last few games. If the sun had been shining and City had been getting a few wins then it would all be different, no matter what tactics the Manager had employed.

It would however make sense to believe that neither Elano and Jo will be happy about warming the bench - which player worth his salt would be ? Judging by Robinho's rush to the bench after scoring yesterday there may well be something going on, but not necessarily critical. I'm sure that he would much rather have the 2 of them playing alongside him.
Let's wait and see.

Who do you think you're fooling mate, you just another RAG trying to get us going. Go worry about your own team and stop posting on here because as you can see this is no flash in the pan move but a long-term project.

I can't wait to see the players we get in Jan boys, I'm a huge Joe Hart fan but I'm thinking he can learn a hellava lot off Gigi Buffon (who's been missing a few games recently, so can still play 1/3 of matches) for a couple seasons and maybe Diarra from Pompey or De Rossi of Roma who is world class however you look at it, bridge over Taiwo in my books but i'm only surmising here. What about Mexes from Roma as well, old Bacon Face was after him before he moved to Italy and would be an immediate improvement at centre half to teach Micah tactics and to take some preassure off Dunney Monster. I think we can look at our striking options in the summer when clubs are more receptive to interesting(large) offers for players because as it stands I think we've got great options upfront that only the top 4 can better.

Come City!!! Let's get behind the team boys, because if you've noticed that our best players this season ("Super" Stevie Ireland exluded) have been the players Sparky has brought in, SWeeP, Kompany & Zabaleta so I really cannot wait to see who's next on his list. CTID!

I can't believe some of the fan's on this site when they quote articles from some newspapers where the only accurate thing in them is the date. The undercurrents of jealousy that exists towards City amongst some of the these so called sports journalists is becoming more apparent as they almost on a daily basis attempt to destabilize our club.
Mark Hughes was well aware of the shortcomings of his squad that's why he made bids for 8 new players on the last day of the transfer window,it was not his fault that the open cheque book was only made available to him on the last day.Having more money at his disposal in January does not necessarily mean that he will be able to bring in those players he really wants. He may have to bring in some short term loan players to make sure we finish in the top half or even players who may be only his second or third choice. He knows the squad is short of experienced defenders and will put that right, he may even go for someone like Sami Hypia who is just 35 6' 3"and and is available.Like I have said previously this time next year will be the time to pass judgment on Mark Hughes not now!

Dunne has had a bad time recently but we will miss him if he is out for 3 games. When Dunne was playing great over the last 2/3 years Richards got a lot of plaudits. Now when Dunne is not playing well it is time for Richards to stand up and be counted. But he isnt up to it. I am worried by our defensive fraility. However on the positive side what a player Robinho is. He is well worth the money. We really need top class players helping him out.

all u suppose city fans wanted Hughes to get sacked go and support bury then you will have something to moan about. The atacking football we've been playing this year is been great for 20 odd mins yesterday
We were in control of the game 1 nil up and harry was up of his seat panicking ( just watch the first 20 mins) it changed when headless chicken gelson got himself sent off. Mark Hughes is sussing his players out until jan and come then there will be big changes second half of season under Hughes is always better look at his managing career don't panick that's what the press and everyone not connected with city wants us to do

sacking the manager isn't the answer BUt an its a big BUT

not sure MH should be getting complete control over footballing matters as he has shown he is tactically poor and he plays player out of postion for no reason (Vas on wing SWP in midfield.

As MH as said the balance of the team is wrong but he doesn't seem to do anything about it
