The England defender is unlikely to play in the UEFA Cup-tie in Denmark on Thursday but signs are that he will not be out for long.
Richards was out cold for around nine minutes after clashing heads with Tal Ben Haim, but awoke before he was loaded into an ambulance and rushed for a scan at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
After the match boss Mark Hughes had an upbeat report, saying: "Losing Micah threw us for a while and we lost a bit of tempo to our passing. It shook us a little because there was some concern for the lad.
"Micah was a little bit groggy but the paramedics did their job. By all accounts he was lucid in the tunnel.
"I do not think there is any concern regarding a neck injury, it is more he has a bang on his head."
But the win brought a smile to Hughes' face.
"It was just what we wanted," he beamed. "Not just the fact that we won but the manner in which we achieved it.
"Vincent Kompany came in and looked every bit the player I thought he was beforehand. He has only had one training session with the group but everyone saw what an accomplished player he is."
While fans are likely to see much more of Kompany, they are unlikely to witness Nery Castillo who is expected to leave City this week.
The Mexican international, who arrived on a partly self-financed loan from Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk, is expected to return to his club and then move on Real Betis in Spain.
His departure follows that of Italian striker Rolando Bianchi who finally got his wish to return to Serie A when Torino met the Blues' asking price for the 25-year-old.
City are believed to have recouped around £6m - slightly more than they paid for Vincent Kompany - for the striker who cost them the best part of £9m just 12 months ago.
Both departures will help reduce wage costs significantly - £100,000 per week - and make it easier for Hughes to bring in replacements.

Ireland did great yesterday. I guess the manager has found himself a right wing alternative. Play him against the weaker teams and he will be a menace. Looks like Petrov is at it again. Maybe he should be a kind of sub that comes in during the last 20 minutes and run at the tired defenders. Hamaan was that steady tower and the season now looks very bright and blue.
Get well soon, Micah!
Does anyone know why we'd be in for Karl Henry at Wolves, he's nearly 27 and hasn't set the world alight. Seems a stange one to me, a low cost squad player maybe.
It looked very bad and from personal experience of the same thing I know how Micah felt after regaining conciousness, Micah will need two weeks to recover fully but at least we all know he is ok - get well son we need you. The game was very encouraging Sturridge was tremendous as too was Stephen Ireland and Michael Johnson but overall I was extremely pleased foe everyone connected to the club especially the fans --KEEP IT UP SPARKY...
After yesterdays brilliant result and performance I think with Joe back we could get away without signing a striker. Benji to come back.Lets sign a left back and get SWP back as he didnt even make the bench yesterday.
Good news about Micah. I personally thought it was his fault because he just seemed to turn and jump into Ben Haim who seemed to be in control of the situation. Maybe they will have to work on their communication.
As far as Bianchi and Castillo it is good news in that we will free up some money for wages. Always thought Castillo was too lightweight and his injury didn't help when he first came.
Hopefully the rumours are true and we are going to sign SWP, although I hear Everton are favs to land him.
Good Business, Get well Micah! Hughes said he has made numerous 12 million pound bids for other players!
Hope the head's not feeling too sore Micah. Get well soon, we need your enthusiasm and energy to push City on and up.
Rolando Bianchi out Big Vic in give or take a few quid good business, nice to see Micah should be back on his feet pretty soon, was that the longest game in Premier League history yesterday ???
I am sure Rosey love will look after him...
CTID
Did you really think Micah was seriously injured? He's a freakin' horse!
Hughes is doing what Sven failed to do.
We got rid of so many ...
Good news about Micah - but he will need some rest after sustaining concussion. Good to see Castillo go - far too lightweight and just gets in the way of Sturridge and Evans.
