UNITED'S Mikael Silvestre looks as though he is on his way to Eastlands, but the Blues' hopes of signing Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz are fading fast.
Rumours linking Silvestre with a switch across town have been confirmed.
The 31-year-old left-sided French defender, whose recent career has been blighted by injury, has spent nine years with the Reds and is said to be available for a knockdown £750,000.
It is likely Blues boss Mark Hughes will use him as a left back.
Meanwhile, it appears a new deal is being worked out for Blackburn to keep Santa Cruz.
Agents working for the Paraguayan are expecting the imminent offer of a pay rise for their client.
If the 27-year-old agrees terms, then it would end once and for all the Blues pursuit of the prolific striker and leave Hughes seeking an alternative target.
The City chief's need for a hitman grew ever more pressing last night when it was confirmed that Valeri Bojinov will be out for six months after rupturing his right Achilles in the warm-up prior to yesterday's 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa.
He joins an ever-growing casualty and absentee list that includes Darius Vassell, Jo, and Benjani, but Hughes is not over-confident of adding to a stable of strikers down to the bare bones of Daniel Sturridge, Ched Evans, Felipe Caicedo and Rolando Bianchi.
Pressing
"We hope to do something but time is pressing and we might have to go with what we have got," he admitted.
City tabled a bid of around £12m for Santa Cruz last week, an offer that more than irritated the Ewood hierarchy, who had already waved goodbye to star men David Bentley and Brad Friedel.
That attempt to splash the cash came amidst Thaksin Shinawatra's continued attempts to attract new investment and share the financial burden of running the club and after the Blues secured a loan of £25m from Standard Bank plc which has been taken out to ease cash flow problems and is set against future television money.
The cash was loaned back in July and is common practise in football with more than half the Premier League taking out similar amounts to tide them over a three month period when there is little or no income.
Even so, Rovers have not been tempted with boss Paul Ince making it clear they don't want to sell Santa Cruz who began the new season in impressive form on Saturday, scoring in the 3-2 win over Everton and making the last minute winner after his header hit a post.
"Blackburn were clearly not impressed with City's approach for the player and are planning to put a new deal in front of Roque before the transfer window closes," confirmed an advisor to the striker.
Although all clubs engage in some posturing as the transfer deadline looms, it seems Rovers will hang on to a player who has also been linked with Aston Villa and United this summer.
City may well yet test their resolve one more time with an improved bid, but it would take something well over the odds for Rovers to accept it.
Would you like to see Silvestre at City? Have your say.

At the end of the day he would do a decent job for us and at £750k, you can't complain.
Hope we do buy him along with a midfield!!!

His age doesn't worry me (31 is nothing) but his injury-prone past does...even at a knockdown price of £750,000.

No too sorry we will miss out on santa cruz alough he score he missed a couple of easy chances on saturday. at over £15 mil he is well over priced.
Why not go for podolski at similar money or try and swop Darren bent at spuds for chorluka. Or even Milito for £10 mil would be better bet.
We need and anchor man in midfield and a right winger

And if we had a billionaire owner who actually had some cash i would go after moutinho and veloso to add to our DM and AM options and Taiwo to solve LB problem.
However, i suspect Silvestre (which at £750k isn't too bad) will be the only deal done over next two weeks.
Trust in Hughes to get it right eventually though....

he has said all along he won't leave and fair play to him. Its good to actually see a loyal player still in the game.
Wish we had a few players who actually cared about the club!!!
next target up front? milito. although who knows if theres any money to buy with.
Might need to loan in the midfield areas. god knows who. right now...id have just about anyone

A forward is also now a priority. Boj out, Bianchi and Castillo off. I hear both Zigic and Vagner Love are available for loan deals... Just please not Saha too.

I'd rather we signed Milito, who is only 28, a year older than RSC and cheaper. He has a great record for goalscoring, is good in the air and so far hasn't suffered injuries in his career. A gamble in the Premier League but we need some experience up front besides Vassell.
We could then spend the money we have saved on Taiwo for left back, as he is strong and fast and also scores the odd goal. We then need a right winger to balance the side as Etuhu isn't good enough yet for a team with top six ambitions. Zabaleta would be a great signing especially if we could get him on loan, if not then maybe we should sacrifice Corluka and try to swap him for Lennon from Spurs. If we had the cash then Joe Cole should be a target, after all if Villa are after him then maybe he'd leave Chelsea for regular football !
I'd only consider swapping Corluka if he is to stay at right back. He should have moved to the centre against Villa and Ben Haim should have been captain. TBH is more vocal and more experienced. Richards power and pace should have kept Ashley Young out of the game which is something you obviously have to do to prevent Villa scoring - how Hughes didn't recognise this I have no idea !
If Hughes cannot use the strengths of various players more intelligently then it could be a long season for City, even though with the two players we have brought in we are at present a stronger squad on paper than last season.
Milito, Taiwo, Zabaleta (or Lennon) and possibly Banega or Annan would be great additions to the squad and loan out or sell Bianchi, Castillo, Caciedo and maybe Ireland. This should give us a much stronger and better balanced squad, shouldn't put us more in debt than we are (!) and might still get us into the top six next May.

Regrettably, it will open us up for more of the ridiculous bile from Chris Bascombe of the News of the World.
Did anyone else resd this garbage? I couldn't finish it. The main thrust of his argument seemed to be that we are thrashing around in a pathetic attempt to copy the Rags.
Fair enough if that's his opinion, but it was written with no style or humour and he just came accross as a graceless nerk with all the charm of an unflushed toilet.
Now whose copying the Rags Mr Bascombe?
