That bad form will have to change in two weeks’ time if City’s Euro adventure is not to come to an abrupt halt in northern Denmark.
Mark Hughes is today unlikely to be quite as downcast as the one-time commander of the Grand Fleet was back in 1916 – but he could have been feeling considerably better had his men not started so poorly against the Wolves of Midtjylland.
Fifteen minutes of sloppy passing, running down blind alleys and poor shooting were cruelly punished by the fleet-footed Danes.
The Blues were masters of their own embarrassment. Elano was careless in aiming a free kick from the half way line – an error from which the home side never recovered properly – before Richard Dunne’s attempted clearance was blocked and Mikkel Thygesen slipped the ball to Danny Olsen to hammer home from just inside the box.
It left the home side as deflated as the popped ball that held up play for two minutes at the start of a bizarre evening.
Inappropriate
Midtjylland may have been irreverently referred to a ‘Midget Land’ by some of the more linguistically challenged Blues fans ahead of this UEFA Cup qualifying tie, but the moniker could hardly have been more inappropriate.
The Danes, with a fair sprinkling of Nigerians in their squad and a giant American defender – Daniel Califf – in their ranks, looked as though they had more in common with Gulliver than Lilliput.
City chief Hughes correctly warned before the contest that the unbeaten Danish Super League leaders were both imposing and dynamic, two adjectives he would presumably like others to attach to his men when the Premier League gets under way this weekend. They will have to be much better than they were in this contest, for they were neither.
After a poor beginning it gradually dawned on the home side that they might not be able to canter into the first round proper, but when they did rouse themselves from their torpor and impose themselves they couldn’t find the net.
Chipped
Martin Petrov chipped over the keeper and bar from a tight angle and, after Danny Sturridge had dragged one shot wide, he rattled the bar with an altogether more breathtaking effort as half-time approached.
Hughes, who spent much of the build up to the contest asserting his authority both publicly and privately, looked ready to get stuck into his players as they trooped off to some sporadic booing at the interval.
The opening half came as a shock to the sparse crowd, the size of which suggests that the credit crunch is biting into football. Thankfully for City’s bank manager, the Blues’ season ticket sales have been healthy this summer and have not shrunk from last season’s total of around 26,000.
Had a few more of the regulars ventured to Eastlands they would easily have been able to pick out some familiar old failings which need ironing out before some of the even bigger tests that lie ahead.
These are most notably in front of goal where City continue to spurn too large a percentage of the chances made and on the right wing where Elano is not equipped to be a much needed mirror image of Petrov.
There was an over-elaboration, too, at times and some of the passing choices were too ambitious against opponents who were far from the naïve travellers some had expected.
Ignominy
City had chances to claw their way back to level terms but the giant Califf cleared off the line from Petrov, who then saved the home side more ignominy when he cleared off his own line when it appeared Sturridge might be credited with an own goal.
Hughes sent on Bojinov, who would have started had he not tweaked his knee in training, and Etuhu, in a bid to salvage something from the wreckage but the Wolves kept them at bay until the overworked Petrov chipped a delicate free kick against the bar with Heinze a spectator.
It could have been even worse for the Blues had Hart not saved well from Florescu and had the German referee seen Michael Johnson’s last-minute elbow on substitute Dennis Flinta.
It was more out of frustration than anything else and it was easy to see why. It was a bad night to top off another strange week in the life of Manchester City.

We must go back to a five man midfield, with Elano having a free role he is the only player capable of creating chances.

Sturridge=Greedy and mard
Elano=Shouldn't have been subbed
A class, grown up for midfield a must.

Though I use that term very loosely.
Sure, the match wasn't great and the team only started to play after 20 mins when they woke up and realised they were actually "in a real game."But there's still the second leg to go.All is not lost.At least not for me.
But to boo them off at half and full time was ridiculous after the week we've all had...by definition,in tough times SUPPORTERS do just that...something that certain individuals in the stands seem to have forgotten. With the rag-infested press lining up to bury us,the last thing we need is to do it from within.
I normally sit in the South stand, but misplaced optimism made me move to the other end of the ground, behind the goal, for the second half. Two muppets in front of me(one with a name begining with "k" on his back-you know who you are) systematically abused the City players for the entire second half.Every misplaced pass or error was greeted with howls of derision, and at the final whistle they almost combusted.
Add to that the other clown behind me who waited until he was stood on his own, looked for the cameras and then unfurled a Swedish flag, visibly looking to see if he was getting the attention he thought his "loyalty" deserved.
Imagine the picture.City "fan" surrounded by empty seats unfurls Sweden flag...Back page headlines to toilet-paper like the mirror.WELL DONE MATE.
So for me,the choice is simple.
SUPPORT THE TEAM AND THE CURRENT MANAGER,FORGET SGE,STOP WHINGING WHEN THE SLIGHTEST THING GOES WRONG,GROW SOME BALLS OR DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND GET OFF TO THE SWAMP WITH THE OTHER SPINELESS,CHINLESS LOT.

abject display from the second half of last season. I'll leave others to explain why/how
the performance sucked, all I will say is that
with five minutes left when we're one down Petrov is taking a throw-in on the left in the opposition half, and not one City player was showing for the ball.
I'd be grateful if anyone could explain that to me.Thank god there's another leg.

Michael (the invisible man) Johnson wouldn't get a pay rise in any other job would he?
Phew - long hard season methinks. The Danish team are better than quite a few premier league sides including our own it would seem.
Don't have nightmares folks.

Absolutely diabolical performance. Worse I have seen in years and I have seen a few!
Dunne is a joker and gets paid 50k a week for entertaining us with his gaffes week in week out.
Playing a right footed defender at left back is just lunacy.
Johnson wants more money? For what? doing nothing and getting totally overrun in midfield!
Gelson "run all over the place but achieve very little" Fernandes was his usual create nothing self!
Corluka looked like his head was in London - Worse performance from him since he came.
As for Caciedo......Thanks for your one and only start for City. I doubt very much that we will see you again! Hopefully!
Only Richards was any good for me and without him we would have lost by more.
End of Europe for us in my opinion and with this squad maybe thats a good thing.
Oh and finally, When everyone is getting excited in March next year when we are 8th and one win off a Uefa cup place, remember when it actually happens nobody is interested. The crowd tonight (and yes before anyone asks I was one of them) was absolutely laughable!

The fact is that a more deflated team effort has yet to be seen. Awful game-plan and not a clue of what to do.
MH have yet a lot to learn before mixing with the best.
Sven I want you back.

As for Elano, well, I have been reluctant to join the ranks of those who write him off but after tonight and a rather inept display against Milan, I am beginning to think he hasn`t got what it takes in the English football.
Dunne was responsible for the only goal tonight and needs to look at his approach. Guts? In abundance. Effort? Can`t be faulted. Brains? Coolness?Ouch.

One thing that does make me wonder though is that this Danish team were good. They competed at speed and passed to each other. Why is it that we are willing to pay inflated prices for mundane players when there are players like these around? I may be wrong but I feel that if we were to offer a few £1m for any of their players we would have our hands snatched off. Why are we not pursuing them? They must be good they beat us!
CTID and beyond.
