Manchester City

Hughes hands over wish-list

GO GET 'EM: Garry Cook and Mark Hughes
MARK Hughes has handed his transfer wish-list to City's executive chairman Garry Cook.

The two spoke extensively while the Blues were in Hamburg for the weekend friendly.

As expected, more firepower tops the new manager's catalogue of requests, with Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz believed to be the No 1 choice - even though Rovers are asking around £14m for the Paraguayan snapped up cheaply by Hughes a year ago.

There are believed to be around another half-dozen possible signings earmarked by the manager who, after securing the services of central defender Tal Ben Haim this week, will look for a right winger, two midfielders, a left-back and a goalkeeper.

His wish-list will be a big test for Cook and owner Thaksin Shinawatra who promised funds would be made available this summer but added that they would be limited with a bigger transfer splurge expected next time close-season.

"We took the chance in Germany to make an assessment of where we are and what we need to do next and my job is to support Mark in where he wants to go," said the executive chairman.

Hughes accepts that he will have to be patient when it comes to new faces and is prepared for some brinkmanship with his Premier League rivals.

He is also adamant that he will not be rushed into making deals that do not fit his exact - and exacting - criteria and knows that Cook will do all he can to support him.

"I've done business right to the last minute of windows in the past so it's not a situation that I am worried about. Good business can still be done right at the end of the window," stressed Hughes.

Who should City buy? Have your say.

when Cook and Hughes were unvailed at City 2 months ago Cook said that MH had given him names of people who he was interested in and that work would start on getting them straight away, whats happened since then????

Now he has a list, lets get some spending done. I for one am fed up checking transfer latest on sky news and see we have done nothing. If we had a female in charge the money would of been spent already!!

So now we get to the point of the season where the transfer system goes crazy...
£20 million for Robbie Keane ! unbelievable......

anyway, as for the players i would like us to sign, we are obviously getting Ben Haim. the goalkeeper, possible Sorensen at Villa.
in midfield, maybe Appiah and Banega. Right sided player, joaquin or maybe valencia at wigan. and after watching Michael Ball on saturday, i would rather have Bobby Ball !!!!!!!

well at least we now know that they are after the correct positions!

Right wing is the most important for me. Although Wright Philips doesn't appear to be leaving and I dont think they are willing to fork out Bentley's price. So god knows who they will get on the right.

Stephen Appiah would still be a good midfield buy. He is 27 now and probably about to go through his peak years.

He is a really strong, dominent midfielder. That is exactly what we are missing!!

I am not bothered who he buys as they will be good signings for us,he is no fool and whoever he gets will get my total support,i dont think we really have a clue who he is after,he is very much his own man ,the one good thing this season is there will be no shrinking violets out there you will put in 100 percent or out you go ,i think Elano might not like Sparkys toughness, but we will see ,as the picture say go and get them,CTID,

Shaleum Logan for the right wing berth backed up by Aaron Lennon or the other way around. Any keeper will do because it should be a third choice keeper. Schmeical is easily as good, if not better, than Hart. Nicky Shorey for left back and Garrido can cover for Petrov on the left. Would have taken Bullard for Midfield and maybe Annan also.

Well it seems like there is some truth in the no money this, loads of money next scenario.

Is this because Dr T is bargaining his assets will be taken out of the fridge next year??

If that is the case we are only going to get people on staggered payments (like we did with Jo and probably wanted to do with Dinho) due to an initial cash flow problem.

This basically rules out any buys over 5 Mill from anyone playing at an english club, as the FA doesnt like these staggered payment deals.

Also if you were an italian, german or spanish club would you want to sell your stars to a club whose financial strength and ability to pay up depends entirely on Dr T walking away in a few months time with no ramnifications???? Call me Mr Cautious but Im not sure I would be prepared to take that risk without rock solid (and probably very expensive) corporate insurance policies.

It looks like a summer of bargain european buys and average Ben Haim type signings. It still would mean a strengthening of the squad and by no means means we will be rubbish. I still believe Hughes can get more out of our talented bunch than SGE, so Im not being a doom mongerer. I just think we have to take a big rain check on all of the unrealistic targets for this season. Top 10 is probably going to be as good as it gets. If we play decent footie have a good cup run that will probably have to do.

More worrying is that that will mean that next year we will be playing catch up not only with the top 4 but also Villa, Pompey, Everton and Tottenham. But a year ís a long time and a lot can happen. That is a bridge we should cross when we get to it.

Didn't he do this weeks ago?

I can't believe MH would not have known City's weaknesses before he arrived. Blackburn played us twice last season and he should have done his homework.

Not this week, not next week but the week after that when, if at all, it will all happen methinks.

I was a bit dissapointed when i saw that Muntari had left portsmouth for Inter. That would have been a perfect signing for us. A two way player with some muscle and superb passing abilitys. And he just went for 8 mill. When definetely need some creativity and strenght to the midfield and i say we should get rid of Elano he doesnt have the strenght for premiership football. We really should check out Thiago Neves the guy that assisted Jo in the olympics pre game. He is another left footer but prefers playing in the middle and often draws out on the right with a terrific shot. 4-2-3-1 with Petrov - Neves - Right footed petrov with possibly elano as a backup but just as that. And one bad as* mf alongside johnson behind them.

He must have been reading our comments. Or me thinks MEN have no clue who MH wants to sign and are just doing there usual make it up as they go along.

Have they even tried to find out who we want to sign. It does not take a football genius to work out what we need.

Again this story is lazy they have one small quote from Cook and added some comment from MH (from a couple of days ago) and padded out with a lot of speculation.

What we need to know is stuff like is TBH having a medical and when etc.

finger out please

It makes sence that by now Hughes is aware of what is needed and where it is needed. Mr. Bailey believes it to be at the obvious positions everybody pointed out on here, as he believes there will be a dozen names on the list. Ofcourse ...
We've been linked with about 30-plus names so far since Hughes arrived. The gossip will light up again after this message come sout in the press. And we will see if Frank will put his money where his mouth is, even though this window he will not (or not be able) to put in a serious sum that is needed to make the step towards the top 6. My guess is we will get 2 new faces in, next to Jo and probably Ben Haim. It will be enough, just hope they are the right ones.

This backs up the theory that Bluesy wanted to assess the squad before making rash buys.

We shall now see the colour of DR T money and how much he is willing to back up MH in the quest for success both domestically and in Europe.

MH history in the transfer market is very good, lets hope he doesnt get stung with overinflated fees

At last some news on the transfer front. I know a lot of posters will disagree with this, but i believe santa cruz to be a one season wonder. To pay 14 million for him is taking a big chance, he never set the world on fire at bayern and they were glad to off load him. He is now a known threat and will be snuffed out (i believe) quite easily this season. We need to put our money into the midfield engine room, we have enough forwards who should be able to do the business with the right service this season.

City to win The Cup

Good Choice but I dont think we will get this list.

But I wish we could see some activity to get players settling in. At the moment it all just talk and Hughes say he prepared to wait until end of window. At the moment I cannot see any change from last season.

My guess is the transfer action will really start at City once the Sky money arrives. Even if Thaksin has plenty of hidden cash, he is likely to try not to move much or any of it to City whilst the Thai authorities are breathing down his neck and so City's liquidity may be stretched to the limit as a result.
