Richards is facing a key nine months in his development as he enters his fourth season as a Blues first-teamer.
The 20-year-old is battling to win back his place in Fabio Capello's England side after missing the final three months of last season with a knee injury.
Now fully recovered and raring to go, Richards has resumed his central defensive partnership with captain Richard Dunne.
Hughes plans to keep the Academy graduate in that centre-back role this season, making full use of his pace and aerial power.
But the manager acknowledges that Richards' ability to play in other positions will come in useful during a marathon season.
Useful
Richards, of course, has played at right-back for England and also proved himself useful in midfield for the Blues during Stuart Pearce's time in charge.
And Hughes feels that those qualities will be invaluable as he wants to avoid making unnecessary personnel changes once the Premier League campaign gets underway at Aston Villa in three weeks.
"I've always had players in my squad that have the ability to play in a number of positions because I know that it helps me come match time," Hughes said. "Instead of dragging players off and replacing them with others, I can move people around. It means I can have that flexibility without making personnel changes. That helps.
"I like flexibility in players if they can put that into their game."
That flexibility is the reason that City have been looking at former Bolton defender Tal Ben Haim, who can play at centre-half and right-back.
Ben Haim proved himself as a class act during his three years at the Reebok Stadium, during which time Wanderers never finished lower than eighth in the Premier League and qualified twice for the UEFA Cup.
Ability
Even though his first-team chances at Chelsea have been limited since his move to Stamford Bridge last summer, the Israel international has proved that he can be a key part of a squad chasing regular European football.
It is that ability to move seamlessly between one position and another that Hughes admires in a player and it is something he is trying to develop in the squad he has inherited from Sven- Goran Eriksson.
The fact that Richards has already shown that flexibility so early in his career is a great encouragement to the City boss.
Hughes said: "Micah is an outstanding athlete as well as a very good footballer. His physical attributes lend themselves to other positions.
"He may not have a perfect understanding of each and every role, just he hasn't got the experience yet.
"But physically he's capable of playing in a number of roles.
"Micah and I see him as a centre-half this season but there will be occasions when circumstances dictate that he plays in other positions. That applies to other players as well."
"Richards is not the only City player to have shown his versatility in the club's cause. Nedum Onuoha and Vedran Corluka played at both right-back and centre-half last season while Darius Vassell would pop up in right midfield as often as he did at centre forward.
Perhaps the most extreme example of that versatility saw Brazilian playmaker Elano crop up at right-back for a game against Fulham at the tail-end of last season.
Hughes does not want to be shifting players around to that extent, having admitted that the squad he inherited had an unbalanced look about it.
The need to sign a holding midfielder and a right-winger, in addition to an experienced back-up goalkeeper, remain priorities although Hughes does at least know that he already has players willing to fill those positions.
But while Hughes and his executive chairman Garry Cook work on bringing in players to give the squad a more balanced feel, the manager will keep drilling the versatility message into his players. Hughes said: "We might look at a number of players in different positions just to see if we have that flexibility."
Which is Richards' best position? Have your say.

Sounds like an endorsement of Micah the midfield enforcer to me. Certainly he has all the physical attributes to play there. Just not sure he has the touch. The one time I've seen him play there (West Ham away?) he was a fish out of water, but perhaps Hughes and Didi between them can school him in what's required?
I hope this Means we are getting
Ever Banega
Micah's best at rightback i think, but i'd like to see him tried in midfield as a possible replacement for hamman. Pre season friendlies would be a good time to experiment with formations and try and change the dreaded 4-5-1, especially with all the strikers we have now!
I think he could do a good job in front of the back 3, maybe in a 3-5-2. Left back would need sorting for this though.
We are weak in midfield and Without signing a ballwinner, we're limited at the moment. I have faith in mark hughes as i feel he will get the best out of the players we already have, and will strengthen with quality, when he's assesed the current squad in matches.
Todays game will be interesting i think.
IMHO, Micah's best position is Right Back. Although very capable at CB, alongside Dunney, and at Holding Midfielder, RB gives him the chance to maraud forward and create havoc with his power and pace.
Vedran is slightly different in that he is a ready made replacement for Didi Hamann. Not blessed with Micah's pace but with a great touch, ball retention and ball-control. In addition he carries the ball well, (reminiscent of 'The Kaiser'), and his distribution is good.
The much maligned, (by many of the 'experts') Vassell is another who's versatility will no doubt ensure him a place in MH's plans.
He played as a holding midfielder in the youth team and that is where I would like to see him play.He offers more going forward at right back than at centre half.I would play Corluka in a holding midfield role I believe he would make a good midfield player and should be looking to see If certain players can fill certain positions that we are short on players ie:holding centre midfield during pre-season.Instead of bring in certain players that we don't need! so we can spend the money elsewhere!
If city played Didi as a sweeper then yes i think Micah could play in CM.
Get ready for the opener at Hamburg on Ch5 (105) from 15.20 all you fellow experts.
Will MH even play Dunney when he is unavailable for the first 2 league games? All will be revealed shortly, well some aspects anyway.
Enjoy!
Beach bum, Zihuatanejo: Agree 100% with your assessment.
Micah is the best right back at the club but his best position is centre back.
Versatillity?, reckon they should concentrate on mastering one position if the Hambourg game is any sort of guide.
it would be great to see micah schooled to be a top rate holding midfielder, not only ould his pace and power be utilised, it would save the club wasting untold millions on some mythical super player who is suposed to be so good all the other lightweights (elano, ireland, etc) can just stroll around looking for impossible passes while the super midfielder does all the battling. aint gonna happen, im sure M H knows all this and will sort it.
Ben Haim-key part of Chelsea's squad!!!!!
Richards where were u in the hamburg in a germans pocket.
Oh the joy and how much were clubs willing to pay for you.
Id sooner sign the worlds smallest defender as he would do better than what you preformed like, give me a a football playing pitt bull any day as its small and will sort you out.
