VETERAN midfielder Dietmar Hamann insists he still has plenty to offer Manchester City this season after playing a key role in getting their European campaign off to the perfect start.

The 35-year-old scored a fine second goal in the Faroe Islands to secure a 2-0 UEFA Cup first qualifying round first leg victory over the part-timers of EB Streymur.

A team of teachers, carpenters, accountants, policemen and students were no real match for City, who led early on through a Martin Petrov goal. The second leg, which is being held at Barnsley's Oakwell stadium on July 31, should be a formality.

But Hamann accepts he has a personal battle ahead of him.

He said: "I know that I have to prove to the new manager Mark Hughes that I am still worth my place."

After the famous Champions League victory in Istanbul with former club Liverpool, when he came on as a half-time substitute to help turn the game, Hamann managed just seven bit-part European appearances for the Anfield club before a move to Eastlands.

Hamann said: "Playing here in the Faroes is a bit different to playing in the Champions League final with Liverpool in 2005. But it is still European competition, and that is what I am looking for.

"Istanbul was one thing, this is different but in every way just as important for City.

"But it is a big difference. I had not been to the Faroes before but you must go to places like that and be professional and enjoy the experience.

"I treat them all the same. You have got to. If you play in places like the Faroes you know your club has a lot to lose, so we handled it all very professionally.

"As for me, let's see what happens now. I feel I have a lot to offer in Europe and I believe City can progress. You only have to look at what Rangers achieved last season, they showed what was possible if you believe in yourself and play well.

"We have to take this competition with care, work our way through one round at a time and see what we can achieve."

Hamann said Hughes has already made an impression since arriving at the club.

"I am happy to work for Mark. He has only been here a few weeks and he has impressed everyone," he said.

"I am looking forward to the new season just like always. Maybe he will sign a few more players before the start of the season, but that does not bother me.

"I am looking forward to the challenge and I am always here to fight for my place.

"I still think I have got a lot to offer."

Hamann is unconcerned by the prospect of a flurry of new faces, and new competition, at Eastlands this summer,

He continued: "If the manager wants to buy a new player, that is up to him. He needs to know what he wants for the team and that does not bother me.

"Obviously a few names have been linked but I just take it as it comes. We have been training for two weeks and I have other things to worry about than new players coming to the club.

"I have only worked with the new manager for a couple of weeks but the intensity has been very high. He is always asking the players and the staff to do things right and correctly.

"We have been training very hard and we will only see the difference from last season later on.

"When you played against Mark Hughes' sides at Blackburn it was always a very physical and they were a tough side to break down.

"Probably he will try to do the same here. Maybe at times last season we were found a little short. But we played some very good football, especially in the first-half of the season.

"I was satisfied with a good season last time. It did fall apart in the last few weeks, but overall it has been good and we are obviously looking for an improvement on that."
