Hughes, after his first competitive game in charge, said the Brazilian proved himself a "good asset."
Jo didn't get on the score sheet as City, with goals from Petrov and Didi Hamann, outclassed part-timers EB/Streymur in the qualifying tie at Torshavn.
Hughes said: "2-0 away from home in Europe is a good result. We created quite a few chances and I was pleased with Jo. He showed good awareness and link up play and I am sure he is going to be a good asset for us."
The new boss went on: "We got the job done and that was the important thing. To have a competitive game at this stage is always a bit of a worry. You are never quite sure what you are going to come up against.
"We equipped ourselves well and our tempo was good. We got two great goals and we are delighted with that."
In the second half they made a fist of it and closed us down a bit.
“They came out in the second half with a bit more resolve.”
As well as praising Jo, Hughes picked out mid-fielder Stephen Ireland and reserve striker Ched Evans for special praise.
The boss said Ireland showed his flexibility whilst describing substitute Evan's contribution as “excellent”, adding that he now knew why so many championship clubs had enquired about his availability after his successful loan spell at Norwich.
Goal scorer Hamann said that Jo “played very well, keeping the ball and must be very satisfied” with his debut.
The 35-year-old veteran mid-fielder said of his goal: “The ball bounced nicely and I had to hit it. I hit it perfectly, and fortunately it went in. We have been training a lot and it is very disciplined. We want to improve on our achievement in the League from last season when we finished ninth.
“We have only been training for two weeks. It is the same as in every season, you have got to prove yourself. I will be here fighting for my place. I have still got a lot to offer.”

Has for the game I thought that Petrov, Jonno and Ireland where our best players. The disappointing thinf was seeing Nedum at RB. I ma afraid he is just an old fashioned stopper and has to be played at CH.

why do we persist with vassell though?
he aint good.would like to have seen bonjovi or bianchi up front with jo.
and we need a centre back, because richards is a right back and onouha not.
would love to see swp linking with richards down the right.
also a gattusso type holding midfielder, hamann did well but he wont play every game, and would like to see anothe flair player like DIEGO of werder bremmen.prefer him to ronaldinho and lets go a snatch berbatov while we are at it, his best mate petrov may convince him.

Nedum is not a right back and is surely only cover for Corluka Dunne and Richards.
Vassell works hard but is not up to the required standard to start games.
Please buy a new left back, midfielder and right winger asap. Its been clear to most people on here for ages that we need players in these areas but we continually drag our feet and just carry on buying forwards.

I agree that Onouha is a centre half. I think Hughes will play Ben Haim(left) and Dunnie(right) at center half with Micah/Corluka on the right and Ball/Garido on the left. Onouha will be cover for RD and CH. Ben haim can play left back too. I think He will use Corluka/Richards ..whoever is not playing RB as a holding midfielder in front of the back four with Petrov Johnson, Elano/Gelson and Ireland in front. Jo up front on his own for away games... dropping defensive midfielder for another striker (Boj or Benjani) when at home. Jobs a ruddy good one. Any signings on top of this will be brilliant news as although I'm not down on Ireland (he looked the sharpest on the pitch last night)... I'd still rather a winger on the right. With the Bojinator as almost a new signing and Jo..the team is starting to look dangerous. A speciality defensive midfielder with the pedigree of Dietmar would be fantastic news. I'm a fan of Gelson but he still isnt the finished article.

I have to agree except for Ned. I think he would prove to be better than just cover at centre-half. However, it seems Hughes is hellbent on buying Ben-Haim who is a rightfooted leftback/centrehalf and completley surplus to requirements! Can't understand it....

ONUOHA - good to see him back should play at centre half as a substitute though. Steady 6
RICHARDS - has more enery than most and should be either a wing back or a midfielder 6
DUNNE - skipper never really extended but one of two charging runs and headers were vintage Dunney 6
BALL - we were playing a pub team but as good as any of the back four 6
RELAND - usual tidy stuff, but has not got any inclination to overlap on the right to take on a man and provide a cross or two which is what we need when we have a 6ft striker. 7
HAMANN - neat strike sealed the match and his distribution was as usual neat, tidy against a pathetic non energetic side 6
JOHNSON - did nothing special, should have ran the game from midfield and for all his ability dissapointed 5
PETROV - always there for the out ball and used possession intelligently and to great effect only genuine talented footballer on the pitch 8
VASSELL - why was he playing? if this is the start of a new beginning then it looks like the last false dawn.rubbish! 4
JO - not going to slate him cos want him to be great. tuth is very dissapointing 5
SUBS:
FERNANDES(for Hamann 74m) - added some late energy but plays like neil mcnabb side to side stuff 6
EVANS (for Jo 74m) - went close with one effort, like to see more and looks like david white 6
NOT USED: Schmeichel, Corluka, Elano, Benjani and Castillo.

This site is all about opinions god knows I had enough of my own at the end of last season, however some voicing negativity after one game is ridiculous, that side Hughes fielded last night probably contains at a minimum of 5 players who wont be first team players next season, there was no Elano,Corluke,Bojinov,I also think we are looking at maybe 3 new additions who will be first teamers so please please please !!!,lets have a bit of perspective here half that team were fighting for their future and will only be SQUAD players at best and we still won 2- 0...................

CENTRE BACK MATE,
hence why we need another, for back up, we saw how we were with injuries last year when elano was right back.
ben haim can play anywhere at the back and would be a good signing.
