And the new manager has made it clear that he will continue the trend of City bosses by giving home-produced kids the chance to shine at senior level.
Hughes is determined to be involved in all sections of the club and has already indicated that he would prefer the all-conquering Academy to be relocated alongside the first team at the Carrington headquarters.
It is something that has been suggested in the past and cost studies of moving some, if not all, the production line from Platt Lane have already been set in motion.
Electrifying right-winger Weiss and left-footed defender Mee were included in the training squad that was last week whipped into shape on the Austria-Germany border and both got a taste of the action in the midweek friendly.
Slovakian Weiss's trickery and pace made him one of the outstanding performers in the Blues capture of the prestigious FA Youth Cup last season whilst fellow teenager Mee caught the eye with mature leadership from the heart of the defence, though many at the Academy would like to see him operate as a left-back.
Sale-raised Mee, who has just been called into England's Under 19 side, also went on the post-season trip to Thailand and featured in the two games but Weiss missed out through injury and is now ready to show what he can do.
Those two and the more established strikers Ched Evans - who is being chased by no fewer than ten Championship sides after last season's exploits at Norwich City - and Daniel Sturridge are seemingly heading the latest pack of teens waiting to follow in the boot prints of Michael Johnson, Nedum Onuoha, and Micah Richards.
Desire
Though Shaleum Logan was also given his chance to shine in pre-season, he made his senior bow last season before being loaned out.
Hughes, meanwhile, has stated his desire to have an impact on every area at the club - not just in the first team dressing room.
"I am young enough to still have that energy and drive not just to drive a team but also a club," he declared.
"I want to be able to build from within. I have seen it happen with older managers where that determination to drive a club forward as a whole isn't there because it saps their energy and what they do on the training pitch and on a match day becomes enough for them.
"I think I am young enough and have enough energy to be involved in every part of what we do here.
"The Academy is part of that and it is first-class. The quality of the players it has produced in recent years suggests there is very little wrong with what the operation is doing at the moment.
"I like to give youth its chance and I know that City fans, like to see `their own' coming through.
"Those players have a real empathy with the club. They regard it as `theirs' and they desperately want to play. If you get a nucleus of players like that together then they have something extra.
"It is all right having two separate sites but in the future I think that will be addressed," he concluded.
"I think it would help everything to have the first team and the senior academy in one place. Sometimes, for whatever reason, there can be a break down in communication about the roles that both are fulfilling and if you are not careful there can be problems but the Academy is first class.
"It is not a case of me coming in and changing everything. If it is not broken I am not going to fix it."
Which young players do you think will make the breakthrough this summerr? Have your say. Tweet

Saw Vladimir Weiss and Ben Mee play in the fa youth final last season.both are tremendous prospects and Weiss in particular caught my eye.he is not afraid to take people on,tackles back and takes a mean free kick (see citys second goal from last seasons fa youth cup final)
"The Academy is part of that and it is first-class. The quality of the players it has produced in recent years suggests there is very little wrong with what the operation is doing at the moment and if its not broken am not going to fix it seem like to clear statement that one of the best academy managers in the word jim cassel is set to keep his job and not be replaed by someone welsh as most people were hinting at
There certainly is some exciting young talent at Mark Hughes's disposal. I hope he uses it. They could prove as vital to the club as any of the big names being mentioned.
Mark Hughes talks a lot of sense. I would hope that the young midfielder Tsiaskis (?) is also given a chance - he reads the game well and is able to put in some slide rule passes.
Excellent news. Able Weiss is music to my ears
is the game on anywhere on thursday?
everytime I read something coming out of the club, whether it be MH or GC it just oozes knowledge and professionalism. Here's to a long and fruitful relationship between the two and the club.
The idea of moving the Academy alongside the first team is great. The kids can aspire to be in that squad and MH can see (without having to drive 20 miles or so) what is available first hand. Great news....
In MH & GC We Trust. CTID
I'd like to see Weiss and Mee gicen a run out in the league cup (and maybe even the game against EB) perhaps putting Mee at left-back will A)play him in a position where Dunne and Richards can cover any errors (bit like Pearce did at RB with Richards) and B) see if he can be a long-term replacement for left back(which we all know is a problem position for us)
I for one am much more excited at the prospect of players like Weiss and Mee coming into the first team and thriving than I am of superstars such as Ronaldinho and Jo signing up for City. I have not been a season ticket holder for too long but some of my fondest memories are of seeing SWP bombing down the wing and the pleasure of seeing people such as Ireland and Johnson breaking into the first team. We can spend so many millions on the foreigners like Bianchi and Benjani, but nothing will beat the satisfaction of an ex-youth team player getting an international call up, and even keeping a rag out of the national side.
top stuff old bean...
Does Mee have pace? Anyone know?
I would like to see the kids given a chance but we do need some quality and experience to support them. I just we can offload some of the other squad players such as Bianchi, Samaras, Vassell, Mills (D+M) and Corradi
I am bloody lovin' this!
If Mark Hughes and Gary Cook can deliver on half the pre season talk, what a seasons in prospect!
This is really good hear!
I'm glad that MH is going to give the youth a chance, especially considering that Weiss was a class apart in the FA youth cup final.
More importantly, our problem position at the moment is on the right-wing and Weiss might just be able to fill that role.
We're also lacking a decent left-footed defender and cover at the back. So Mee and Weiss' emergence is timely indeed
Nice to see more youngsters coming thru, especially in the positions that everyone thinks we have problems, perhaps MH's lack of activity in the trqnsfer market is because he believes these 2 can make the grade and save having to splash the cash. Weiss in particular looks like he could make a huge impact.

Great idea it is the only way to bring these talented young lads through the ranks, I think all will do well under Hughes.
Saw Weiss play in the youth cup final and other games before that and have been very excited about him since. This guy has the quality to be one of the best and very popular at city. Reminds me of a certain ladyboy from the swamp the way he goes round people. If we had petrov on the left and him on the right we would be one of the most exciting attacking teams in the prem!
CTID!!
Hart, Corluka(rb), Dunne, Richards(cb), Mee(lb), Wiess(rm) Hamman/Johnson(dm) Elano(am) Petrov(lm), Ronaldinho(cf) Jo(st) subs Johnson,Bojinov,Onuaha,Benjani,Schmiechal. Not bad. What do you think?????
is mee not a centre half and mcgivan a leftback ?
Rick, Glos - the boy is lightning personified!
Similar surge of pace as SWP...fortunately though he's much more technique based. He has VERY quick feet. Good balance and strength too.
interesting to see that some of you suddenly thinks that we dont need to buy a right winger? is weiss ready for the premier now? i dont know...
No problems with the sentiments - always love to see 'one of ours' doing the business. Don't think the comment about Jim Cassells being replaced by a Welshman was ever a threat. He could walk into any ground in the world and get a job. We've had some terrible things happen to us over the years, but one of the great things is that Jim is a blue.
I can see the reasoning behind moving the Academy to Carrington, but it's one of our last links with Maine Road....
hi what i would like to know is what about curtis obeng, paul marshall, carl moore, when they played in the fa youth cup final v liverpool 2 years ago these were younger than m johnson and micha richards and by all acounts were the next ones to break through, did they get a chance or have they gone.
Got a strong feeling these two lads(Weiss and Mee) will make it.
But if City are going to be a great side Mark Hughes himself must decide who comes and goes at Man City, and without any interference.
He is the best judge of players so it makes sense.
I wonder what he really thinks of the Ronaldinho saga.!
Its nice to hear Hughes wanting to give youth a chance. Sven said it last year and Pearce before that. Its an obvious statement by a new manager. I hope the academy, who has done such a wonderful job the last few years, will be able to keep producing youngsters that are build up to make the grade. They will however have to be good ebough as anyone bought from outside the club. I for one will always favour the homegrown talent and give them more credit as well.
