CITY take a step into the unknown later this month when they visit the Faroe Islands for the first time to play EB/Streymur in the UEFA Cup.

Here are a few facts about the Islands, and the club, to give Blues fans an insight of what to expect.

- A group of 18 islands, in Faroese, the Islands’ name means Sheep Islands.

- Geographically located between Scotland, Norway and Denmark, it has been an autonomous province of Denmark since 1948.

- The earliest settlers were Vikings returning from Shetland and Orkney. Its present population is 48,000.

- It is almost entirely dependent on fishing for its national income.

- The main Vagar airport has daily flights to Copenhagen and connections with Norway, Sweden and the UK.

- Eighty percent of the population are linked together through a system of under-ocean tunnels, bridges and causeways.

- Faroese speciality dishes are mutton, whale blubber and puffin.

- The islands are windy and cool throughout the year and average over 260 days of rain.

- It was occupied by Britain during World War II.

- Probably the most famous player from the Faroes is bobble-hatted keeper Tommy Knudsen, who finally retired last year, aged 40.

- EB/Streymur were founded in 1993 following a merger between EB and Streymur.

- They were Faroe Island cup winners in 2007 and 2008.

- There are five current Faroe Island internationals in their squad and their major overseas signing is striker Marcell Balog of Hungary.
