Dunne set to stay with Blues

PORTSMOUTH have admitted defeat in their bid to tempt Richard Dunne away from City.

The Blues captain is expected to sign a new contract at Eastlands, despite Harry Redknapp's interest.

City have offered the 28-year-old a contract which would almost double his £28,000-a-week salary - although he could have earned more at Pompey.

But Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has now conceded that Dunne will not be moving south.

Storrie said: "We're not expecting anything to happen. It looks like he's going to stay at City."

I for one am made up Dunne is staying.
I bet if he'd excelled at Villa or someone all these years everyone would be saying great player just what we need born leader etc etc

Fantastic news, but I think that I will wait until he has signed on the dotted line. I think our new gaffer has started really well in tying up these players who were being eyed by the other vultures in the Prem. I know that ther hasn't been that much in the way of transfer activity lately (Jo apart!!), but I think the manager is doing the right thing and not jumping in and signing players for the sake of it to increase the size of the squad.

when dunne signs his new contract that will be the best signing of the summer. good to hear he would get more money at pompey but his willing to stay at the blues for less unlike his old defence parter !

Great news!he never gave out publically and is turning down a bigger contract from Pompey. That is how a top pro acts. He is a true blue..

A step backwards in my opinion,this guy is always second best when he steps up to the plate against the likes of Torres,Adabayour,Berbatov,or even Yakubu!!

despite what some of the negatives on here say about Dunnie not being a top player, he is a vital part of our team.

Yes, he makes mistakes, but he has been defending for a side thats had a poor midfield infront of him for years!

Many of you think he isnt a top defender because he makes too many errors, but if you look at the top defenders, for the top four, you will see very strong midfields infront of them acting as their protection.

They all play in far superior, balanced sides, and they do a 1 man job, as each player should do.

When we have strengthened our team, and midfield in particular, the doubters will realise that Dunnie is actually a top centre half and is worth us paying out good wages to keep hold of.

The last thing we need when starting fresh with a new manager is to lose one of the vital cogs of our squad.

Dunne to be player of the season again? I hope so. He has done a great job for City and long may it continue

Dunnie as shown once again his loyalty to OUR CLUB and has not been tempted by the dollar to move clubs (signing on fee etc) like Distin or Barton. He stood by the club last year prior to the takeover when the rats were jumping, he may not be the greatest defender but he is a good defender and he should hopefully be rewarded with a testimonial after showing his commitment to City.

Some players are more important than what they do on the pitch alone, its what they represent. In a day an age where its rare for a player to stay at a club for more than 3 years, when you have one thats been at the club for all his career and hardly missed a game its vital to keep them. Dunne does have the odd blip but on the whole he is class. I think the team/club would have missed him, leaders are hard to come by and although he not a Tony Adams style captain he has a quiet aurthority about him and is someone all the players seem to look up to. He has alawys give everything to City you can ask no more!

If the guy is staying at City for less money than he is being offered elswhere then you have to take your hat off and acknowledge he is a blue and while most footballing decisions are driven entirely by money which we moan about, lack of loyalty etc then hats off to Zedunne! He has rightly had the sense to secure a better deal for his last big contract but clearly money alone was not the decisive factor. If he signs...Back Him.

What's going on here some loyality!! When this is confirmed I think you can also read between the lines that Mark Hughes has the respect of the Captain. That is a nice way to start.

We do however need a couple of big names to lift our performance. I am hoping we can get there.

Can some of you locals in the Southern Stand say thanks to Dunnie on my behalf, I won't be at Eastlands this season. It's a long way to travel with a ball and chain!!

in times of greed and the only loyalty is to a footballers pay packet, its great to see are captain finds it works both ways after his early misdemeanors he has worked hard and been our most consistant player for years. i for one am glad he is staying the place would not be the same without him.

So there you go Richard you've got what you want now,£56k a week and he's 29 years old.

Well i really do think we have took a huge GAMBLE here.

2.6 million a year i think if hughes had a closer look around england and europe for that amount of money we could have got a younger and more skillfull centre half.

If we are to have any chance of a successful season this year then retaining the core of the squad is vital,and Dunnie is part of that core.the latter part of last season when we had to swap players around in the central defensive partnership proved that those 2 positions need stability with a pairing that are used to playing together. The last thing we need is a new central defender alongside the relatively inexperienced Micah Richards, with a new defensive midfielder in front of them,that puts pressure on the team right from the off. But having Hrt,Corluka,Dunne and Richards (along with a new left back preferably) is the solid base to build the rest of the team.

If you think about it, all great defenders make mistakes at some point in a season. Terry, Ferdinand, Distan ha ha.
The difference is that a mistake is much more impacting when we can't score at the other end. Therefore, Dunne gets it in the neck for one mistake in a game which costs us the game. The top teams may make the mistakes as much as any other team, but they are less impacting as they will go on and score 2 or 3 down the other end.
I for one am longing for stability and Dunne is part of that. He is loved by the Majority, puts 110% effort into every game and is a solid defender who has made many MOM displays that have earnt City vital points over the last few seasons.
Please stay Dunne, you are a great nucleus to build a team around and hoepfully this season, you may get some cover from midfield!!

think if his contract was up he wouldve gone. fact is we turned down pompey's £5m bid and dunnie doesnt want to stay for a year on lower wages and risk losing the fans around Xmas like Distin. so hes taken double your money and adulation of the fans.
