Effigies of the Glazers were burned in the streets. Stickers appeared on lampposts and cars urging them to go away before they had even arrived.
I freely admit I joined the mood. Sure, I'm a City fan but the thought of Manchester's secondary club falling into American hands was a scandal in my eyes.
A Mancunian buying the Reds? Fine. A rich Yank? Disgusting. You know what they said was wrong with Americans in the Second World War? Over-paid, over-sexed and over here.
But for all our fears, for all the breakaways and demonstrations, the Glazers have proved to be a godsend for the Reds.
Only last weekend Sir Taggart was praising his club's American owners. They are a clever bunch those Glazers. They know the folly of fixing something that wasn't broken so wisely they have given Fergie a free hand.
No interference. No picking the team. They rightly believe that there is no point buying a dog and barking yourself.
When Fergie has needed funds they've provided it. The family don't seek publicity. They just go about their business quietly and they've reaped the rewards.
Have they reaped the financial rewards they were expecting? Probably yes. But who cares. They've been generally good for United and United have been good for them.
Turn the clock on a few years and look at Thaskin Shinawtra's takeover of the Blessed Blues.
The reaction to his buyout at Eastlands was in complete contrast to the Glazers' takeover at Old Trafford.
Nobody wanted the Glazers - everyone wanted Frank Sinatra. What we Blue Mooners didn't expect was that Shinawatra felt he WAS the legendary American crooner and wanted to do it `My Way'.
Adored
He brought in a manager in Sven-Goran Eriksson who nobody wanted but who now is adored by every City supporter.
In his first press conference Shinawatra said that his target for Sven in his first season was a place in the top half of the Premiership. Second season UEFA Cup. Third season Champions League.
Sven carried out Shinawatra's blueprint to the letter. God's Own Club will end the season in the top half of the Premiership by a country mile.
Not all of Sven's acquisitions have been a roaring success. But after last season's shambles he had to gamble or the Blues would soon be facing derbies against mighty Rochdale and Stockport County.
I was no great fan of Sven's when he managed England. He just seemed indifferent to his team's performances - both good or bad.
At Eastlands he's been exactly the opposite. Excited, enthusiastic, warm and approachable. At last, I believed, City had finally found a manager who could bring back the good times.
But from thousands of miles away a man who knows nothing about English football, or any sort of football come to that - decided Sven wasn't good enough for him.
His minders have leaked the news that the next City manager will be either Jose Mourinho or Big Phil Scolari. Take it from me, he'll get neither of them.
A clause in Sven's contract stated that only he would select the team and identify the transfer targets. Mourinho and Scolari will demand the same.
But obviously Shinawatra actually likes having a dog and barking himself.
So the next manager at Eastlands will be a `yes man' who jumps when Shinawatra shouts - and neither Mourinho or Scolari are anyone's puppets to be manipulated.
I never thought I would say this about the club I've supported for 50 years but I hope Shinawatra's new puppet manager takes us down.
Then the owner might go back to Thailand.
Hopefully, he will be replaced by an owner who knows more about football. We might even get Sven back to finish off what he started and contentment will return to Hince Mansions.
What do you think? Have your say.

truth be known.
in fact, lets drop down all the divisions and out of the league alltogether,
that'll teach him !!
you and I can sit together with an arrogant knowing smirk on our faces while we watch a derby with Droysden.
not that there's anything wrong with Droysden.

Who do you think you are?
Yet another clown jumping on the
"Sven we have been awful for 4 months yet I cant do no wrong bandwagon"
I want Sven out, there I said it, so you can change your article so it says "All City fans bar the Ninja love him". I for one cant watch the garbage that Sven has us churning out every week yet most City fans think that another 12 months and and an extra £50 million will not only see us become a top side but also see Sven abandon his principles of defensive, negative, boring football.
You are deluded and kidding yourselves because I have seen nothing to suggest that next season will be any different to this except maybe we wont have such a great start.
I am tired of comments from Sven of "We played good football" or "We will not abandon our principles of playing nice football" after yet another defeat. Get lost Sven you are as deluded as most of the fans posting on here, the facts are we have played well in probably half a dozen games this season and I am sure even the teams near the bottom of the league apart from Derby can say that.
Sven came in and we had some nice results, big deal, its the kind of thing that happens at clubs all around the World, a new manager comes to a club performing badly and things take a turn for the better almost overnight but then more often than not things level out and its back to normal, anyone remember when Pearce took over? I do not see how Svens situation is any different?
The only reason I have any ounce of sympathy for Sven is because it has all been handled in a very amateur way but other than that he he can go for all I care because he has done nothing out of the ordinary at City and I can not see how the hysteria that the fans and the media have created is justified! There was less was Mourinho got the boot and he had achieved a hell of a lot more!
So Mr Hince by all means have your opinion like the rest of us but dont include me in your "Everyone loves Sven" harim!

But after supporting them for 50 years I will still support them.
Just wish you could make sure your article actually gets to Thaksin Shinawatra and get him to make a comment.

I dont want Sven to go either, i think he is a breath of fresh air for us, however....
It could be said that as owner of the club, Dr Shinawatra doesnt feel that it is going fowrard at the pace or in the style he likes and therefore, as much as we whinge, he will change the manager. And as owner, he can do that.
This sort of article just inflames people with no actual facts or quotes to support the 'bedlam'or 'puppet manager' comment.
I do think it is funny how badly the MUEN misses out on blue opinion, they were days late with the save sven campaign after asking who we wanted as the new manager, and now theres this rubbish when we are all coming to terms with the fact the frank can and will hire and fire who he wants, but city will endure.
Genius. And you a supposed blue, hincey....

Brilliant Paul Brilliant! Theres one solution to our problems!
What next us packing up and calling it a day. Old Frank cant win then can he!!!
And I wouldnt mind but the MUEN took most of last week to nail their colours to the mast, then realising theres a bit of free publicity to be had print posters and try and get the back page on TV.

Do you not realise the irony of saying this and then slating Thaksin again? Thaksin went against the grain of public opinion before and proved himself right. But now he must be wrong!

"One solution would be for the players to wear underpants in the design of the Thai national flag and moonie when we score."
My idea was for 5000 fans to appear at the last game with Thai flags emblazoned with Thakson's name "Dear Prime Minister" written on it! Your idea is so much better!
