CHELSEA proved too strong for City at Eastlands where Richard Dunne's own-goal and Salomon Kalou's second-half strike settled the game.
City were behind after just six minutes when Dunne diverted Nicolas Anelka's cross into his own net.
Although the Blues fought back well for the rest of the first half, the visitors extended their lead shortly after the break when Kalou rounded Joe Hart to score.
To make matters worse for Sven-Goran Eriksson's men, Nedum Onuoha had to be taken off after sustaining a shoulder injury with just under an hour gone.
City were on the back foot early when Michael Essien raced forward for the visitors and slipped a pass to Anelka on the right.
He swept it into the area and City skipper Richard Dunne got his bearings wrong, toe-poking his attempted clearance beyond goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Chelsea kept up the pressure and Anelka scampered away in the 12th minute but as he shaped to shoot Nedum Onuoha made a crucial block.
City responded two minutes later and Michael Johnson got into a good position only to fire his effort over the bar.
Rattled
Then Martin Petrov rattled a shot wide and Benjani Mwaruwari headed high over the bar while Gelson Fernandes found the arms of Carlo Cudicini with his effort in the 21st minute.
City were beginning to set the tempo and carved out a number of chances in the space of a few minutes to rattle their high-flying opponents.
Benjani and Stephen Ireland linked up in the 28th minute only for the Republic of Ireland midfielder’s effort to be blocked.
Then Petrov thumped in a fierce drive that was superbly tipped away by Cudicini at the post.
Chelsea again found themselves on the back foot and Ashley Cole hacked the ball off the line in the 31st minute, the England defender showing good awareness after Johnson’s effort had been deflected to leave Cudicini stranded.
Avram Grant sent on Joe Cole in place of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Chelsea immediately looked more threatening and Kalou extended their lead two minutes later with a cool finish.
He latched onto a through ball from Essien and rounded Hart to find the corner for his 11th goal of the season .
Anelka almost added a third in the 55th minute only for his header to come back off the bar following a cross from Lampard.
Petrov almost pulled a goal back with a fine free-kick that was just off target, but Chelsea never looked like giving up their two-goal advantage to leave City with just one win in seven games.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

Once again it proved how bad a player Dunne is, get rid of him Sven!

To be fair it could've been 3-3 at half time but seeing as though it wasn't easy enough for Chelski everyone decided to just bend over and take up the you know what in the second half.
I think Benjani is involved in that match fixing scandal too. Everytime he gets the ball he either kicks it into touch or passes to the other team and his first and only shot was about 79 mins in. Oh yeah, he had a free header earlier on which he cleared straight into the upper tier from about 12 yards.
What a sad sad squad we have when our only option to replace any defensive player is Jihai Sun!!!! He spent most of his time chasing 5 yards behind whichever player was running at goal.
A fair result after the second half should've been 6-0 to Chelsea again but they're poor too right now.

Chelsea 2
Again !
City competed well in this game with the main difference being the return of Petrov but the truth is that there was no goals in this team and it wasn't down to confidence, the players or opposition, it was purely down to Sven's persistence with playing 1 up front and the overall effect that this over cautious approach is having on the team.
Sven spent £11 million in january alone on 2 strikers and the result is that it hasn't worked and in truth we could spend £50 million and it would make any difference.
There are many positive things about Sven such as the quality of his signings and the passing qualities he promotes but the overall effect isn't working.
If i was Thaksin, i would be saying to Sven that you have 4 games to prove you can actually provide entertaining football or you're out.

Despite the doom and gloom you are no doubt going to read over the next few hours, i honestly thought this was a reasonable performance against a 200 million pound side. We certainly rattled them with some good moves in the first half, and with better composure should have hit the back of the net.
Chelsea were more dangerous in the second half, but only after we loose another goal and start to chase the game. When Dunne has an unlucky day, he has a shocker. I hope he didn’t bet on the National…
Very impressed with Johnno, he showed class against a formidable midfield, only flagging in the last half hour, but he will get better with fitness. Gelson impressed as well, he certainly gets stuck in, although he looked like a boy against the bulk of Essien, Obi Wan Mikkel and Fat Lampard. Glimpses of the good Elano, but he seems very flat at the moment.
Ireland played ok as well
Try not to be too dispirited folks; there is clearly room for improvement, but plenty of potential as well.
Clap clap clap…

0-2 to Chelsea 15 minutes left. Sven the master tactician goes 4-4-2 WOOOOOOOOOOOH I nearly died of shock.
Thanks to Chelsea for playing their second sting it could have been much worse. Our squad must be the pits Sun on the bench for us Joe cole for them, we finished with Vassell, Ireland and Sun in the side, I am convinced we will still see all three next season.
Elano I am certain this is his swansong, rigsby waves his hands around that much he actually now has the mannerisms to match, another great finish from Dunny an assist last week a finish himself this week, hope your not stitching us up now Dunny ?.
SURELY NOW WE SHOULD JUST DROP VIRTUALY THE ENTIRE SIDE AND PLAY THE HUNGRY KIDS ? .

To be fair though today I thought we played well in the first half and were unlucky to be a goal down. Second half Chelsea showed their class and won easily.
Ireland and Johnson both did well. Petrov was good and gelson got through alot of work.
Unfortunately once again the defence were too slack with the exception of the excellent Hart who surely must be our player of the season and Nedum who did ok until he went off. Elano and Benjani are just not even worth mentioning. Benjani's free header was just laughable and he is turning into our worst buy for the money since Lee Bradbury! (Oh wait hang on I forgot about Corradi!)
Now that Pompey will have their sights set firmly on the cup and not getting injuries, I think we should have just enough in our tank to beat both them and the very poor Fulham with maybe a draw thrown in at Boro. Max 56 points for us. Sunderland and Liverpool will beat us..
So how do we sort it out.
Clearly only Hart, Corluka Richards, Johnson , Dunne , Petrov and Hammann are good enough to be in the first team next season and even then Hammann is getting too old, Dunne is too careless and Corluka is not the player he was earlier in the season.
Elano/Nedum/Ireland/Gelson/Ball/Isaksson are all good enough to have on the bench or in the squad. (Though I just dont think Elano fits into any system we play)
Garrido/Sun/Vassell/Benjani/Castillo/Geovanni and all players out on loan are not good enough and should be sold.
Caciedo/Etuhu/Sturridge I will reserve judgement on although after the youth cup final is complete I think Sturridge should start the remaining games if only for experience.
It is evident to me that we need a quality left back, centre midfield playmaker and enforcer, right midfield and two strikers. - 6 new players overall.
It was also obvious today that SWP is not the solution. His touch was poor and he seems to have lost his pace. I think we had his best years.
I am not going to name all the players who i think we should buy as I hadnt even heard of most of Svens buys and dont know enough about the market. What I would say is that i think some of these players need to have proven premiership experience. Crouch would certainly be one of the strikers I would go for.

I remember when some of my people were too busy enjoy the high life and forgetting what pays for it - work.
I put a note out asking that everyone attend a presentation to a certain employee so that I could show the business' gratitude for his recent efforts. About forty of them were gathered round in the open plan office and I asked this chap to step forward. I gave him a dressing down and fired him on the spot and he was escorted off the premises. That nipped in the bud anyone coming into work and treating it as a doss house.
Sven, take note.

I think we need a 10 year plan, it will take three years to rid this club of all the contract clingers!
The Realist, SW14 (05/04/2008 at 18:47)
The few observations I can make are that Chelsea were clinging on for dear life at home to the awful Boro last week and had a difficult fixture in Turkey on Wednesday, whilst we welcomed back several of our absent precious stars.... and yet we still didnt land a punch on them.
Patience is starting to wear as thin as your hairline Sven, less talk about shaking things up and a more action please otherwise I'm moving over to the Gloomsters dark side.
