Although the more conventional route into Europe is still open to an inconsistent City side, they are now strong favourites to get into the UEFA Cup through the back door just as they did under Kevin Keegan.
And Eriksson insists that it is just fine by him so long as his stars don't start to think they are already on holiday and still put in maximum effort from now until the end of the season.
"I think we can still qualify through Intertoto or Fair Play but we cannot do much about the latter except behave when we are on the pitch. I think it depends on whether England is the top country. I will take getting into European competition any way we can.
"What we can do is play better than we did last week against Birmingham. The players are not on holiday yet. They have a lot of hard work to do."
At the moment England top the European Fair Play table with a score of 8.117 but are only marginally ahead of Norway who lie second on 8.113. If it remains that way on the closing date of April 30 then an additional UEFA Cup slot comes the Premier League's way.
Domestically, the Blues lie sixth in the Premier League Fair Play ranking but all five teams above them - United, Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton - look sure to already be Europe bound.
Eriksson's side average 8.28 points ahead of Wigan (8.23) and Reading (8.20) in the battle to clinch England's nomination.
Do you think City will be playing European football next season? Have your say.

'might as well continue not breaking a sweat, but mus make sure I don't get booked so we'll qualify for Europe through the fair play door'.

As usual we went out of our two domestic cup competitions far too easily - and Europe would provide a focus for improvement next season.

I am not going to start waffling on again about Sven, it seems every story I read about him just lately is getting my back up, and it is hardly motivating is it?
What I have realised from the stories in the MEN the last few days is Sven likes to talk cryptic, so you have to read between the lines, here goes this is what I think he has really been trying to say this week…………………..
“After the Birmingham game I was upset annoyed even, we never performed as team.
“I told them this is unacceptable we play good football all season and now this?,
“On Monday I had calmed down this performance was only a one off ?”
“I saw the players at card school during training and said this must change; you play better against Chelsea,”.
“I decided our top performers will get another chance against Chelsea, Garrido at full back, Vassell up front Ireland in the middle, maybe Sun at centre half this time, who knows we will see ?.”
“As for my productive 4-5-1 they beat us 0-6 last time, I think damage limitation is the order off the day, my sides always attack from the back playing good quality football.
Just out of curiosity do we have a plan B or C.?.
Robbie fowlers quote “Sven is like a deer trapped in head lights “, it certainly seems that way Robbie?
Good luck again tonight J Cassell and the youth lads.

Sven decided months ago to take the back door? Why would he make that decision months ago when we were in the driving seat for a European spot?!

How can United (all of em particularly Fakeronaldo) Liverpool (Mascherano), Arsenal (Eboue, Fabregas) be above City in the Fair Play League. Surely Utd should be down there with Chelski.
Oh, I see, it's more "difficult" to book so-called big four team players!

Manchester City......Manchester City FC! We're by far the FAIREST team, the world has ever seen!
Although qualifying via The Fairy Play League wouldn't be my choice, at least it will give us a bit more pulling power in the transfer market (not that Sven needs anymore pulling power! The dirty dog!)
Spidey a rag.....? If he is, then I'm Tord Grip!
City 6 Chelsea 0! Revenge! Revenge I say!
