MANCHESTER City's European hopes took another blow with defeat against Birmingham at St Andrews.
Argentinian forward Mauro Zarate took advantage of slack defending by Richard Dunne to open the scoring before adding a second shortly after the break.
City were thrown a lifeline when referee Rob Styles sent off Franck Queudrue for a professional foul on Benjani in the box. Elano scored from the spot, but it proved only a brief respite.
Styles awarded a controversial penalty at the other end after Sun Jihai's challenge on Gary McSheffrey and the Birmingham striker scored to settle the game.
Didi Hamann came back in for City after suspension in place of Michael Johnson, and City went close after seven minutes after Fabrice Muamba had given the ball away in midfield.
Elano threaded the ball through to Benjani and his low shot beat goalkeeper Maik Taylor but struck the post and rebounded out before Queudrue cleared at the expense of a corner.
City looked shaky at the back and Radhi Jaidi had a header cleared off the line by Elano after he had made good contact on his header from a McSheffrey corner.
McSheffrey had gone 13 months without a league goal in open play and his anxiety surfaced when he volleyed over from 10 yards out when unmarked after Richard Dunne’s unintentional back header from a teasing Sebastian Larsson cross fell into his path.
Another superb ball into the box from Larsson almost caught out Dunne who was relieved when he toe-ended the ball over Joe Hart, who was off his line, and onto the roof of his own net.
Technique
Queudrue showed great technique with an overhead kick from the edge of the Manchester City area which was tipped over the bar by Hart.
Birmingham took the lead after 39 minutes through Zarate’s second goal in two games.
Dunne failed to cut out Queudrue's pass into the path of the Argentinian striker who calmly lobbed the ball over Hart into the corner of the net.
Another superb finish by Zarate doubled Birmingham’s lead after 54 minutes.
Forssell won the ball in the air and his flick-on found McSheffrey who slipped the ball into Zarate who drilled a low shot past Hart from 15 yards out.
But then City back in it three minutes later as the home side were reduced to 10 men with the sending-off of Queudrue.
Muamba’s misplaced pass played Birmingham into trouble and Queudrue was adjudged to have been the last defender as he brought down Benjani in the penalty area.
Queudrue was given his marching orders by Styles before Elano made no mistake from the spot.
City enjoyed a spell of superiority for the first time but with 13 minutes left McSheffrey scored from the spot after it was adjudged he had been brought down by Sun Jihai.

LEE BRADBURY CITY RUINED MY LIFE (29/03/2008 at 16:56)
This is the reason why I am unconvinced with Sven’s management style, how can players like Sun Jihai,Vassell and Garrido be in any premiership side let alone a City side ?,( I forgot Sun sells shirts) you have to question the managers selections when week in and week out they are costing us so dearly ?, they really do appear to just be going through the motions where’s the passion gone?, why do they look so unmotivated ?
Maybe we have made progress this season compared to last, but if I was the doctor I would not be happy at what is being served up consistently every week this is not just about the lack off quality personnel it is about team ethic and attitude ?

Saying that though Man City didn't deserve to win or get get a point out of this one.
Poor, very poor and the season is over for the Senior lads now.
I'm now looking forward to watching the Youth Team in the Youth FA Cup Final.

At least when Brum went down to ten men Sven subbed Hamman who only wanted to pass backwards. It's a shame we couldn't make another 7 or 8 subs for all the others who only want to pass backwards.
It's a fortunate thing we got a bunch of lucky wins at the begining of the season because we really should be playing in in the Championship next season. We are no different than Derby except for the price of our squad which is even more embarassing, at least Derby's players are all discount rejects.

defied belief not to mention the negative tactics, I gasp with horror.
Does Sven really he can continue to pick a team with no attacking cutting edge, and then wait till after 60 minutes again when we’re losing to correct things.
He’s a complete a muppet.
As soon as I seen the line up …Sun at right back, Corluka on the bench, one up front again and Vassell and Ireland picked at the expense of Geovanni & Caicedo, you may as well walk away and watch ‘come dancing’ if you want entertainment.
Our form rates as relegation form and Sven cannot see that it is his tactics that are the only problem. He alone, is responsible for the boring dire football that is being served up, its not the opposing teams, the weather conditions or the players that are at fault but the tactics, lack of motivation and game preparation.
Stuart Pearce, must be wearing a Sven mask as i can’t spot the difference any more.
Sven has bought some good quality players or his scouts have chosen well, but this man should made director of football and we should install a team coach who can actually motivate and prepare a team.

I said last week Dunne is one of the players we need to replace if we wnat to be a top ten side.... again he showed today that he is not good enough.
I am not singling out Dunne as it was a laughable performance against a side with 10 MEN!!
2 shots in the first half - both off target!! A slight improvement in the second half against 10 MEN Bimingham - comical!
Reading, Wigan, Bolton, Birmingham played = sum total 2 points!!!!
And you are trying to tell me Sven has actually WON trophies in his managerial career??!!
Gutless, shambolic.....even our first Penalty in about 5 years could not spur us to get the equaliser! You would think after the horror show at Bolton we would at least try to improve on the most pathetic away record in the premier league - but obvioulsy not!!
My prediction of 10th place finish this season is looking overly optimistic..... more like 14th! £60M and a horrifyingly larger salary bill has done NOTHING to improve on last season......
Chelsea at HOME next ..... 4-0 Defeat! going to put money on it now....may as well be compensated when this gutless team loses - AGAIN!

Harry boy must be having a real good laugh at City's expence not only did he sell us a dud but we gave Portsmouth the downpayment money for the Premierships current in form striker with 7 goals in 7 games. The average shelf life for a City manager is 18 months, how long will Sven last?
