BIG spending Sven-Goran Eriksson made the most the January transfer window, but admitted he aims to ignore it next year.
The Blues boss was one of the busiest managers of all in the final 24 hours of this month’s long spree, splashing out more than £5.2 million on Ecuador striker Felipe Caicedo from Swiss side Basel on a four and a half year deal.
Eriksson was also burning the midnight oil in a bid to tie up a near £8million switch for Zimbabwe international Benjani from Portsmouth.
The Blues recouped around £1.5million with the sale of teenager Ishmael Miller to Championship favourites West Brom, while veteran striker Paul Dickov headed for a loan deal at Blackpool. Andreas Isaksson’s proposed move to Galatasaray fell through.
“It is good that the winter window exists but I didn’t know it would be that difficult to find players,” said confessed Eriksson.
“It has been extremely% difficult. We have been on about ten cases during January and you think you are almost there and there comes a ‘no’ from a club. I'm happy the window closed and the telephone stopped ringing.
“Next season I will approach things differently but hopefully we will not need that much in the way of players next January. We hope to do what we need next summer.”
Meanwhile, he is more than happy with the business conducted this month that has seen Rolando Bianchi and Ousmane Dabo go out and Nery Castillo come in.
Left-sided Caicedo may soon be competing for a place with home grown talent Daniel Sturridge who has scored in each of his last two outings.
The 19-year-old Ecuador international has been plying his trade in Switzerland’s Super League since he was 17 years-old and can play in midfield as well as up front. At 6ft 1ins he will add height to the Blues attack and knows his way to goal having scored 12 times at a little over one every three games for Basel.
He is the second player to arrive from the Swiss top division after Gelson Fernandes and was extensively scouted by Eriksson’s right hand man Tord Grip. He has 15 fifteen caps for his country and is currently a vital member of their World Cup qualifying squad.
He will not be available for Saturday’s game with Arsenal and according to his agent, Saif Rubie, is not expected to arrive in England until Sunday or Monday.
“This deal was in the making for two months,” he revealed. “There were three other teams wanting him but he really wanted to play for Sven. He will settle well. He is ready to get stuck in.”
Eriksson first saw Caicedo play when he went to watch Elano play for Brazil against Ecuador.
What do you think? Have your say.

I viewed Benjani as surplus to requirements at pompey after they signed Nugent & Utaka,(and then Baros this window) but as they both flopped the Bog Eyed Bunger had no option but to play a player who'd hardly set the Prem alive.
I'm not being negative, but I kind of think maybe Baros on loan would have been a better bet, and maybe re-assess the situation in the summer.
What do you think?

This Ecuadorian bloke we've bought, Caceido is an 18-year old left footed forward....remind you of anyone... with Sturidge now firing, did we really need him.
Also, thought we could have got a bit more than £1.5m for Ishmael Miller with the form he's in. He could have gone to any premiership side in the bottom half for 3 times the money!
Still at least we finally got someone. Reading the rumours on this site everyday was killing me.
We love you Sven and Frank!

It said 17 year old Mancini had signed on loan? Will he get games?
Of all the players we have let go (Bianchi, Miller, Dabo, Dickov, Samaras) we only recouped £900,000?! Given Castillo loan cost £3m alone. That is a bit of a joke but at least we got rid of Dabo! Sure Bianchi and Samaras will not get perm moves and we will lose big money on both.
Castillo and Bojinov need to hit the ground running No doubt about it - I can't see Castillo getting a big money move in the summer unless he is amazing! Elano needs to shape up too as the competition is hotting up
Hopefully Vassell will be dropped to the bench

Pressure off Petrov, Elano can move towards the right - maybe if the Benjani move comes off we can be properly balanced again. So just a holding display against the Gunners, and then 6 points from the scum (after keeping the silence - I mean it)

And it doesn't say anything about Caicedo or Benjani!
So who is right I wonder? And who do I trust more?

I hope this is right about Benjani.

City spokesman Paul Tyrrell said, "Due to the late arrival of the player in Manchester we were unable to complete the transfer."

Benjani moves to Man City
Benjani has successfully come through his medical - as expected - so he has completed his move to Man City, for a fee reported to be £8m plus.
I am absolutely gutted that the fella has left, and I cannot believe this has happened... but it has and in all fairness we have got good money for him, particularly when you think he is 29. His work ethic however will be very hard - maybe impossible - to replace.
I will probably write more about Benjani tomorrow, as the fella deserves this even though we will have to move on and accept it - but at this point this is just clarifying things have gone through regarding his transfer being completed.
I wish Benjani all the best of luck with his new club he will always have a very, very special place in our hearts. I pray that Man City appreciate what a special player they have got and give him the patience that we did - if needed...

NO Benjani, arrived late and deal fell through.
So now we are still left with the same right midfield problem which is unfortunate. Will Vassell be right midfielder for the remaining fixtures??!
Lets see how things go, Johnson is yet to return as is Bon Jovi and Nervy. Fingers crossed its soon.
