SVEN-GORAN Eriksson admitted Manchester City missed a golden opportunity to reach the Carling Cup semi finals.
The Blues saw their 100 percent home record go up in smoke against Tottenham - crashing out to a 2-0 defeat.
And manager Eriksson knew the competition represented a great chance to win his first piece of silverware as City boss - particularly given their outstanding home record this term.
He said: "The players and the fans, like myself, are all very disappointed.
"We thought being at home we had a good chance of reaching the semi-finals, but Tottenham started very well.
"We got away with it at 1-0. In the second half we controlled the game - but we could not score."
City couldn't take advantage of Spurs going down to 10 men when Didier Zokora was sent off.
Goals from Jermain Defoe and Steed Malbranque ended City's proud 100 percentĀ home record, stretching back 10 matches.
While Ramos was dismayed at referee Steve Bennett dismissing Zokora, he was thrilled at the way his players responded.
Positive
He said: "It is a positive result and sets us up for the rest of the season.
"To come away with a 2-0 victory will stand us in good stead and help the mind-set of the players.
"Given the circumstances, it has to be the best performance since I took charge.
"We were away from home against a team like Manchester City, who are high in the league and on a good run of form at home.
"Not only that, we were a man down from the 20th minute yet still managed to get through. We got our just rewards."
Zokora was dismissed for lunging at Elano, but Ramos said: "It wasn't a sending-off, not in a game like this.
"A cup tie generates a heated atmosphere, and the referee has to be a bit more flexible. It was unfair."

Disappointing last night but credit to Spurs for a job well done. Referee was poor. Never a red card and Malbranque should have had a red. Johnson was pushed in the back - penalty not a dive. Hart had only one save to make and Robinson pulled off two excellent saves. We have come a long way in a very short time. The future is bright blue. Keep the faith - Merry Christmas.

We do need to have a little patience with our team though. Garrido/Richards are still very young and need to learn their trades. Sticking with them now will pay dividends in years to come. If it costs us a few games this season - so be it.

The main problem when attacking was our whole front line was too static. Just camping on the edge of the Spurs area and waiting for the ball surrounded by defenders. The best way to beat ten men defending is width and movement. We lacked both for most of the game. Towards the end several players looked tired as well. Johnson and Elano in particular, looked to be struggling. Petrov and Geovanni and Corluka were the only ones who really tried to spread the play, but it didn't help that the formers passing was woeful all night.
IMO the real reason we lost last night is we have a very thin squad. Hamman, Elano and Johnson pick themselves if they are anywhere near fitness, because we don't have any real quality cover. The forward line also lacks a big target man. Hopefully all this will be sorted in the window. Disappointing as it was, we have to remember that this is still largely the same team as last year and a lot of the players in it are also very young and still maturing. SGE has worked wonders just to get them where they are.

So how do we sum up last night. Firstly, I got sick of all the moaners sat near me, even after 1 minute they were moaning and groaning about things, you all need to get behind the team...you would not have thought we had won all those home games the way people were in the crowd last night. It was like they expected Spurs to just roll over like they were some conference side. Yes Spurs have had a poor start but they are far from a poor team who have finished 5th 2 seasons on trot.
To me the 2 main problems last night, was the lack of someone trying to force the issue and make things happen, and secondly we just could not handle berbatov, who was awesome. City started poorly, but you cant just blame Garrido for the goal and its unfair just to pick him out and say why wasnt ball playing etc, that still would have happened to ball, there was no pressure on any of the players in the build up and Garrido was left short. Again I have seen some more moans about Petrov. For me, only him and Geo when he came on tried to make things happen, and tried running at the players, too many others played the safe option stood still and passed when they didnt need to. When you play against 10 men, you have to make them work, but they didnt need to do a lot of chasing as we kept passing too early before a challenge was near or kept hitting them with our passes. Well done Sven for trying to change the game but I think he needed to instruct our wide players to stay wide, because if we would have persisted with that I think we would have got the goals, but we ended up being too narrow & Elano was dropping far too deep. I agree with other posters about maybe switching Richards with Corluka, but lets just remind ourselves of Richards age! He is bound to have a dip in form, so get behind him and help him back rather than slagging him off. Dont know where that stat came from on Sky that Spurs had 65% of possession coz 2nd half it was all City. Anyway, its not the end of the world and success with Sven wont happen overnight. Good to see us already getting recruitments for January and with Bon Jovi fit we will have some good options. Bianchi didnt get much service last night, but he is the type of player who comes alive in the box which is what we need.
Keep backing not slagging

Still I'm not too disheartened we play attractive possession and passing based football with a team who display a desire to win, a massive change from the start of the year.

Earn a replay and lose 6-0 at home to 9 men!!!!!
Please do me a favour and lose at upton park.
In my 46 years this was the most embarrasing home cup defeat I have witnessed.
It is now obvious that none of Svens signings are up to the rigors of premiership/English Cup football but worse than that is the way we are ruining Micah Richards by trying to convert him into a centre half. It's a carbon copy of what happened to Ian Brightwell who started as an attacking box to box midfielder and ended up a jack of all trades master of non having 'filled in' as full back then centre back.
If the club don't know his best position (and why would they when ALL city's younsters in the past have brilliant prospects at 18 and nowhere at 20)then sell him to someone who has proper coaching set up - don't ruin him!!!!!!
