HIGH-FLYING Manchester City were held to a draw by Steve Bruce's Wigan on a frustrating afternoon at the JJB Stadium.
Geovanni, in for the injured Elano, put the Blues ahead in the first minute when he pounced on Titus Bramble's mistake.
But Paul Scharner struck back after 25 minutes and neither side could produce a winner after that. Mario Melchiot was sent off late on for Wigan after a two-footed challenge on Stephen Ireland.
Of all the starts Bruce could have envisaged to his second stint with the Latics, none could have been as shocking as the one which unfolded.
Bramble’s somewhat unfortunate reputation as an accident waiting to happen preceded his £5million move from Newcastle last summer.
Yet the Wigan fans have been largely impressed with the defender, certainly one of their club’s better performers in season filled with disappointment.
All the good work was undone by the mistake which gifted Geovanni - who came into the City side along with Georgios Samaras - his third goal of the season.
As Scharner’s header bounced in front of him with no opponent even close, Bramble chose to wait before attempting to lay the ball off to Kevin Kilbane on his left.
Inexplicably, Bramble merely brushed the base of his studs against the ball, succeeding only in dropping it right into the path of Geovanni, who had continued his run more in hope than expectation.
Darted
Handed the City playmaking duties of fellow Brazilian Elano, Geovanni quickly darted into the empty space in front of him, skipped round Chris Kirkland and tapped home.
By his dug-out, Bruce was almost too stunned to react.
Rather than crumble, as most teams in the bottom three would do faced with similar circumstances, Wigan shrugged off their disappointment.
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side were pushed onto the back foot for long periods, even if central defensive duo Richard Dunne and Micah Richards remained relatively untroubled.
All that changed midway through the opening period as Wigan took advantage of the difficulties Javier Garrido continued to experience after falling heavily following a collision with Antonio Valencia.
Vedran Corluka could only flick a cross from Garrido’s left flank into the path of Jason Koumas, who had enough time to pick out Scharner with a ball back into the City box which invited the Austrian’s firm headed finish.
Wigan continued to hold sway until the interval, although their hopes of ending their long losing run were dealt a major blow right at the start of the second period by the departure of Emile Heskey, who was instantly substituted after going down holding his hamstring.
Ironically though, Heskey’s replacement Ryan Taylor nearly put Wigan in front, forcing Andreas Isaksson into a superb low save after he met Valencia’s flick with a firm left-footed volley.
City responded and enjoyed a good spell towards the middle of the second half, and Eriksson threw on Kelvin Etuhu and Rolando Bianchi in a bid to snatch victory.
However, neith could find a way through, and the only late talking point was Melchiot's dismissal for a two-footed lunge on Ireland.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

Think we are all wishing it was Dec 31st, so Sven can get a few more attacking options in.

I usually like Samaras but he was totally useless today. He was more of a benefit to Wigan.
City were clueless and had no drive. Really bad performance all round.

How can a team pushing to go second in the league try and sit back and defend a 1-0 lead after 30 seconds.
The same happened with Reading last week where we sat back and tried to defend that 1-0 after 10 minutes.
How the hell does Samaras, who hasn't scored for a year, still start????
That was one hospital ball after another. and every back pass to Issakson looked like it was going to end up in the back of the net.
On the TV you could hear all our supporters singing for Bianchi all the way through the second half and still he only gets 12 minutes to try and salvage something.
My favorite was when Samaras (or as my wifey says Sampras) tried to put in 3 Wigan players on our goal when he passes (short as usual) to Michael Ball.
Wigan deserved a point and even after they went a man down they looked more dangerous than us.
If I was Bianchi i'd definately be looking for another club in January, every one but the tea lady can get a game before he does.
Sorry Sven it's time for 4-4-2. This lone striker crap is getting us nowhere.

City had plenty of possession but passing was not incisive enough in the final third. Petrov and Ireland failed to provide Samaras with any ammunition. I'd still like to see City press the ball more when their opponents have it in their own half but that probably doesn't suit a midfield with Hamann in, who they will miss next time out due to suspension. Hope Magic is back to fitness next week.
Have to view that as two points dropped but one (horrendous) defeat in ten ain't bad.
A striker and two midfield players are definitely the priorities for January. Still see nothing to suggest that Bianchi won't be leaving then.

It's getting beyond a joke this bunch.
We can't keep up at the top (six) over the season taking next-to-nothing away from home, it just doesn't compute. This wasn't a point gained, but two lost and yet another goal conceded against poor opposition.
Titus Bramble is a donkey, everyone knows that. City should have set up from the off to do nothing but drive at or around him. I love Sven, but sometimes his selections and tactics just baffle me...including consistently leaving substitutions (too) late.
Come on City!

Our attack is like a blunt sword, it pushes but doesnt break. We need someone to sharpen it, and quick.
We may find ourselves slipping down the table by january if we dont change now. December is a busy month, and any more games like this, we will all feel aggrieved for christmas after the promising start.

Midfield weak again, Strikeforce none existant once again!
At least it wasn't a 4-0 again but if we keep averaging half a point per away game and relying on home results we will finish outside the top ten.
I am glad to hear Thaksin say Sven has asked for two midfielder's and a striker. Samaras was abysmal again.... Hammann does a good job BUT he is Luxury we cannot afford. A different midfield system would get more goals and assists. Petrov had yet another quiet day (far too many for a player of his reputation).
We are limping through to Christmas trying disparately to get 1-0 wins and sit on that for the entire game. Once January comes we need to spend huge amounts of money on big signings.
We are in a great psoition and have done so well to get here BUT this is our best chance to finish strongly in the Premiership (in the season where the most money ever has been made available by TV companies). This is our best chance to establish ourselves as European regulars so No I am not moaning because I am not a true fan.... I am moaning because we need players that can do better than we did today. We did nothing and on most other days would have lost 2-0.

Yet again we seemed slow to react to loose balls, gave away the ball with sloppy passing or lingering on the ball. Dont seem to have much urgency. and very lucky not to concede more due to bad defending.
I'm hoping a few new signings might liven it up a bit.
Definately need a bit more bite in midfield then maybe we will create a few mor chances for the starved forwards. CTID
