VISITORS to the Wellspring in Stockport got something extra with their evening meal last night - Didi Hamann!
The Blues midfielder dropped into the resource centre for homeless and disadvantaged people in Stockport to help serve the drinks and have a chat.
His stay was part of the Premier League's Creating Chances scheme and the 34-year-old German international was more than happy to do his bit.
"City as a club does a lot things in and for the community, more than any other I have known, it is important to keep a bond with people whatever background they have got.
"It is great that clubs who have the resources can go out and help people and show them that there is a chance for everyone.
"It is always important that we as players give something back because we live a privileged life and we shouldn't forget that there are people who, for whatever reason, are not in a situation that they would like to be."
Hamann added: "There are a lot of things that footballers do that does not get publicity and many do charity work. Obviously sometimes newspapers prefer to write about bad things rather than good ones and knock people down and it does give people a false perception of players.
"These types of community schemes are great for educating clubs' own young palyers and for them to get involved.
"Sometimes with the young kids in football these days, success and money come very quickly and if they don't have the right head on their shoulders they can get carried away. But I don't think that is the case with City's youngsters because they are all made aware of the position they have got and the responsibilities that go with it."
The Wellspring centre on Fletcher Street won one of the Blues Creating Chances Places for Players slots and a £2,000 grant from the Premier League.

Real supporters follow their clubs whatever happens. I have total respect for the Rochdale/Bury/Stockport fans etc who follow their clubs everywhere. Much rather that than the jump on the trophy bandwagon that you get at Chelsea and the rags.

I am the Project Manager from The Wellspring in Stockport, the project where Didi worked on Monday 24th September 2007.
Just wanted to say that Didi was fantastic on the night and made a real effort to help those less fortunate than himself.
If anybody is interested in Volunteering or making a donation to The Wellspring then please visit our website www.thewellspring.co.uk you will also find additional picture of Didi working on the night.
The Wellspring offers many services to Homeless and Disadvantaged people including support to find housing (over the last 3 years The Wellspring has suppoted over 300 people into housing ) All these people were sleeping rough on the streets of Stockport or Manchester at some time.
Many thanks to Didi, Manchester City Football Club and The Premier Leagues Creating Chances scheme for their support of The Wellspring.
