THAKSIN Shinawatra is ready to bust the City budget for A-list stars.
Bolton's City old boy Nicolas Anelka and Inter's Brazilian striker Adriano are the two men most prominent on Sven-Goran Eriksson's radar, though he could yet switch his sights back to one of his fellow Swedes Johan Elmander if, as expected, Liverpool end Toulouse's Champions League aspirations tonight.
Despite spending nearly £40m and adding approaching half that much again to the wage bill since he took over, Eriksson is determined not to let the fast start to the season disappear for the want of top class attacking depth.
And with £6m buy Valeri Bojinov out injured until the spring, the manager is keen to persuade the board, who wanted him to sell before buying again, that a replacement is needed.
Anelka, who spent more than two seasons with the Blues, scoring 38 goals in 87 Premier League games, is someone Eriksson admires and the newly-married 28-year-old Frenchman is said to be keen to stay in the North West.
Interest
With United's interest seemingly lukewarm and Portsmouth not as upwardly mobile, a move back to the Blues, where he was idolised by fans, may suit Anelka.
However, there remains the stumbling block of a £9m fee that would be the highest Eriksson has splashed out.
The manager has other options in Adriano and Elmander.
With question marks in Italy over the 25-year-old Brazilian's attitude, clubs would look to take Adriano, who has scored 25 goals in 37 games for Brazil, on loan.
But that prospect is unlikely after representative Gilmar Rinaldi said his client is not considering a temporary move.
Meanwhile 26-year-old Sweden striker Elmander will be a legitimate target once his French side are no longer in the Champions League.
Toulouse want around £8m for their prized asset who has turned down a contract extension and told them of his 'dream' to play in England.
Who would you like to see at City? Have your say.

Adriano's attitude in Italy stinks, and although he is quality I think he would be a bigger risk than Anelka.
Which leaves Elmander, big, strong, physical - this sounds too much like Bianchi for me and it would be one or the other in the team - not both.
If the purse strings will stretch, and we can get rid of five or six off the wage bill this week, then maybe we should go for Elmander AND Anelka, and with Bianchi, and Bojinov to come back + a couple of the youngsters coming through we could have a formidable front line for a few years to come.

this shows how far we have moved on in just 2 months, we are being picky over which world class centre forward to have to cover for Bojinov,(still sending happy thoughts to his poorly Knee) simply mazing.
And a BIG UP to Kasper the Viking, you are living up to the legendary name

Such as?
"slagged us off before he left, " ( blue moon risin)
Myth.
"Elmander, please not Anelka" ( Moonhead)
Why, when Anelka is a proven Premiership scorer?
"Why on earth would anybody want Anelka back at City ???" ( Prophet of Doom)
38 goals in 87 games may have something to do with it. I cant think of any good reasons why anyone shouldn't want him back.
"He's well known for not socialising in a dressing room and bringing an air of negativity," (Moonhead)
Ah right! Sorry I didnt realise that. Well known by who? Whats you source for that comment?
"Anelka = sheer class and goals" ( BLUE THAI CURRY)
That sums it up for me too. The best striker ever to play for City. What a disaster it would be having him scoring all those goals for us again!

Anelka is famed for moving from club to club, picking up his big signing on fee and then when he has had enough he will move on. But I feel now he will finally want to settle down. He has just married and openly says he wants to stay in the north west. So with the creativity and guile we have in our midfield now there is no reason why he cant get 20 goals this season, and if we manage to get into europe again there is no reason why he would need to move on again.
Compared with the forward line we had last year Anelka and Bianchi would be a mammoth improvement.
What are your thoughts?
