SVEN-Goran Eriksson will have to sell to buy if he is to bring in more new faces in the remaining five days of the summer transfer window.
The Blues boss has made it clear that he would like to strengthen his squad with at least one and possibly as many as three new faces before Friday's looming deadline.
But having already spent close to a budget-busting £40m and added a whopping £15-£20m to the already large wage bill, he knows he will need to wheel and deal or wait until the January window.
Billionaire owner Thaksin Shinawatra promised Eriksson £50m to spend in the first weeks of his tenure and has been true to his word, but he and chief executive Alistair Mackintosh will not let the payroll get out of hand.
Surplus
The three men are in agreement that there are already too many senior players at the Carrington headquarters.
Eriksson will, however, make one last ditch bid to sign Palermo's Aussie midfielder Mark Bresciano and possibly bring in a loan striker, though that might change if he can successfully off-load some of the players he inherited and has swiftly deemed surplus to requirements.
It is not so much the fees the fallen stars of Stuart Pearce's reign may command, but the wages that they would free up that could be crucial as Eriksson hopes a currently quiet market is poised for take-off.
The Blues are frustrated that former Villa striker Darius Vassell has turned down a £1m move to bottom of the table Derby.
It is understood that the Rams wanted to give the versatile and speedy 27-year-old who last year played wide as a striker and `in the hole' behind a lone frontman, a three-year deal but the neglected City ace turned down the move to Pride Park.
Vassell had previously said `no' to a switch to Turkish side Besiktas after City had accepted an offer. He has one year left on his current deal and has yet to even warm the bench for the high-flying Blues this season.
The former England man is one of a handful of players who will be allowed to leave permanently following the departure on loan of Matt Mills and Ishmael Miller but so far there have been precious few callers at Sven's door.
Internationals Georgios Samaras, Bernardo Corradi, Danny Mills and Paul Dickov are those most likely to leave if the right deal can be made.
Eriksson, who has abandoned his search for a goalkeeper, would then look to strengthen his midfield resources and perhaps bring in a striker with Inter Milan's out of favour Brazilian Adriano on loan and over-priced old boy Nicolas Anelka still possible targets.
Where do City need to strengthen their squad? Have your say.

His that his agent Gilmar Rinaldi has given Inter an ultimatum: in 48 hours Inter must decide if to keep and utilize Adriano, or sell him - a loan deal seems out of the question for the Brazilian.
Marco Branca is working on a lightning-fast deal to get Adriano to Premier League. Manchester City are still negotiating (after City's Julio Baptista trail seems to have stranded), but now Newcastle has also made an approach. Negotiations with Arsenal, though, have been interrupted. Milan is considered out of the question because of the rivalry between the clubs, and Parma is not an option that pleases Adriano.
Well, well, let's really hope Svennis' apprentice Mancini remembers who he has to thank for most of the success in his life, both with lazio and now as coach at inter... Watch this space...

People to consider selling if the offer is right : Vassel (still think he offer something on the RHS0, Samaras (showed some flashes - would like to see what a good manager could do with him), Sun Jihai (Jack of all trades / Master of none - big heart tho')
To bring in - Defoe or Anelka plus a midfield playmaker / ball winner

Let Sven and his back up team work on the squad players that we have and try to bring the best out of them just as they have with some of the current 1st team players.Vassell and Samaras may yet have parts to play even just as subs.Look what has been achieved with Hamman -- a player that many would have said should never play for us again at end of last season.
C'mom Sven work your magic on the squad you have left at the transfer window close.

You're not welcome here any more. So please go as Farrer-way as possible from this site.
Is it true that MUEN have not been including the silent 'T' in your surname for fear of the truth coming out? After all, you are full of hot air, aren't you?
If you do have a girlfriend (which I doubt) ask her to get you a life for Christmas.
For the true blues: don't panic lads. We're playing good football and Sven clearly knows what he's doing. We're capable of gatecrashing the Champions league qualification party this year - mark my words!

What is going on?
And I think some Blues may have to revise their views of how much money we REALLY have to spend, as it looks like we're now spent up.
Don't get me wrong the takeover and Sven was the best thing that could have happened to us, as the alternatives were disastrous, but if you accept the fact that most of the deals done this summer were on instalment payments and we got a fair chunk for Barton, I doubt if we've actually spent £20m up front so far.
And that's just about the sum we got extra from the TV deal!
You do the maths!

Not surprising then that the purse strings are being tightened.
If I was Vassell, I'd get off to Derby 'cos I can't see another premier league club coming in for him...same goes for the others who are surplus to requirements.
Shows that no premier clubs really want our cast-offs...
