Mills wants football

DISCARDED defender Danny Mills has insisted he has no intention of going into 'semi-retirement' at Manchester City.

The former England full-back still has two years of a lucrative Blues contract to run but has already been told by Sven-Goran Eriksson that he will not figure in his first-choice line-up this term.

Rather than start a row with his former international boss, Mills - who had a fractious relationship with former manager Stuart Pearce - claims he respects Eriksson's forthright approach.

But any City fans who think Mills will be content to serve out his contract are wrong.

At 30, the former Leeds star is desperate to play. And he will now assess his options before deciding his next move.

"People may be sceptical about how badly I want to play," he told the club's official website, www.mcfc.co.uk.

"But I can assure everyone I am not going to just sit here and be a squad player, relax and go into semi-retirement with weekends off.

"I have played football for the last 16 years and I want to play football on Saturday afternoons.

"That is what I am all about and that is what I am determined to do because I have got five or six years left in me yet."

Future

Mills spent time on loan at Hull last term and, unless he is prepared to take a vast salary cut, a temporary move away from Eastlands may be the most realistic option for him, especially with the August 31 transfer deadline looming.

City have not indicated whether they would want a fee for the player but at least Mills is now aware he has no future at City.

He continued: "The manager has been very honest, which is quite refreshing in this day and age."

Meanwhile, City's transfer of Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano is yet to be concluded.

Eriksson is keen to bring Bresciano to Eastlands to add a bit of bite to the City engine room.

The basis of an agreement has been reached with Bresciano's current club, Serie A outfit Palermo and the 27-year-old has been in Manchester during the early part of this week.

The issue appears to revolve around City's desire to stagger the payments, while Palermo want the cash up front, in one lump sum.

Palermo director of football Rino Foschi is pessimistic about the chances of Bresciano completing his 'dream' move to England, claiming: "The more time goes on, the more convinced I am nothing will come of it.

"City are not respecting the initial terms of our agreement."

Eriksson, however, is hopeful the transfer can be completed in time for Bresciano to play some part in the opening game at West Ham on Saturday.

Lets hope his pride gets the better of him and he goes elsewhere. However i wouldn't blame him if he stuck around,it wasn't his fault the club saw fit to offer him an unbelievably highly paid and lengthy contract - he just signed it(while probably laughing his socks off!)

BENNI McCARTHY FOR CITY ?
Can anyone comment on the rumours that Sven wants to sign Benni McCarthy from Blackburn. There's a lot of gossip about it on Blackburn's Lancashire Telegraph site. What do you think ? personally I think it would be a great signing.

Gary,
Don't know anything about these McCarthy rumours but I do know that BMc told a former City player that he would like to join City back in January.

Everything Danny tried went wrong from Day 1. You could see him come out fired up and ready for battle - and he got sent off. Personally, I don't think it was his fault - just the animosity that all the referees seemed to build up against City. The worst of the lot was Graham Poll. The City fans knew from kick-off that they weren't ever going to get a positive decision from him - hence the derisive chanting. The World Cup fiasco just confirmed what we all knew - but it seems it came as a massive shock to the FA.

The Premiership referee's antagonism to City is probably going to come as a massive shock to Sven as well, but he's going to have to live with it - as we've all had to learn to do.

Blue John, London - people like danny mills dont understand pay cuts and helping people to help himself! This waste of space has cost us so many goals I used to know we wouldnt keep a clean sheet on the off chance he was included! I have never liked him and his stubborness has cost us, if he really wanted football why didnt he move last season when he had the chance. I understand Hull agreed a free move but he only wanted the loan and to "fight" for his place at City. And he is rubbish on 5 live too. Good riddance, go join Thatcher.

Absolute parasite, didnt he do the exact thing at leeds, he was meant to have been paid about 300 thousand after he left them in 2003, he is no doubt quite happy sitting on his arse reaping the benefits, everthing which is wrong with modern footballers.

City will have to either pay up his contract or pay half his wages at his next club to get rid of him.

Yet another post censored. I take it you don't like constructive criticism as this story has been re-hashed 3 times in 2 days. Lazy journalism.....again!

So how come City want to stagger the payments for Bresciano when Thaksin apparently has wads of cash? It seems to me that despite the change in club ownership, City still do things on the cheap.

SGE is a fantastic manager says Fredrik Ljungberg in a swedish newspaper. He is cool and the players will be cool whith him around them. But he needs time whith the team.
