City sign Geovanni

MANCHESTER City have signed Brazilian midfielder Geovanni on a free transfer.

The former Barcelona player, who has four caps for his country, has agreed a one-year deal at Eastlands.

The 27-year-old becomes Sven-Goran Eriksson's third signing since taking the reins, following striker Rolando Bianchi and Gelson Fernandes.

Geovanni, who cost around £11million when he moved to the Nou Camp in 2001, last played for Brazilian side Cruzeiro but had a trial at Portsmouth earlier this summer, scoring in a 2-0 friendly win against Yeovil.

He passed a medical at City’s Carrington training complex today and will link up with his new team-mates when they return from their Swedish tour.

City fans may have fond memories of their new signing after he scored for Portuguese side Benfica against local rivals Manchester United in 2005 - a goal that contributed to the Red Devils’ Champions League exit.

Geovanni also scored once in his short Brazil career, against Bolivia, and found the net 17 times in 94 games during his time at Benfica.

Never heard of him, come to that, not heard of any of the first three he's brought in, so much for household names, but if they do their stuff, who cares ???

ahhh so excited! this man was the bees knees and once the biggest prospect in the world. Portsmouth were very impressed by his appearance the other day in a friendly where he played a hand in both goals. He's nippy, skilful and a winger. Happy days :)

He was at Portsmouth on a two week trial. He scored in the friendly against Yeovil Town. Sven has pinched him from under Redknapp's nose. Payback time for Distin. Just think, Portsmouth probably paid his air fare to bring him over from Brazil. Nice one Sven, Redknapp is one of those in the game that slagged you off! Hip hip!!
