Manchester City

Son starts to shine

 Kasper Schmeichel

KASPER Schmeichel found out on a chilly February night in Rochdale just how much pressure he would be under to live up to his father.

The young goalkeeper knew from the moment he signed his first professional contract with City in November 2004 that he would invite comparisons with dad Peter.

But he discovered just what being the son of a goalkeeping legend really meant when he started playing first-team football.

The Blues had just sent him out on loan to Bury to gain some experience, and his second game for the Shakers was a League Two fixture at Rochdale in February 2006.

But as Kasper ran out of the tunnel with his team-mates, none of the cameras at the ground were pointed at him. Instead, the photographers were focusing their attention on the main stand, where Peter had taken his seat to cheer on his son.

It is a good indication of the pressure that Kasper has had to live with during his short career. But there are signs now that the 20-year-old is getting ready to step out of his father's shadow.

He had two successful loan spells with Bury, and then gained top-flight experience in Scotland with Falkirk last season.

Any keeper who manages a clean sheet against Celtic - as Kasper did in March - clearly has the ability to perform at a high level and he has stated publicly that he would love to go out on loan again next season to gain further experience.

The keeper, who has yet to make his competitive debut for City, is developing in the full knowledge that he must try to avoid comparing himself to dad if he is to succeed. That view is endorsed by goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, who has worked with father and son.

"I think Peter was one of the greats and it will be very difficult for Kasper to get to that level," Steele said. "I still think that he will make a very good living from the game but you have to remember Peter's actual physical stature and the presence that he had."

Kasper - who has established himself as a Denmark Under-21 international - still has plenty of time to develop. Legendary as his father was, Peter didn't play his first game in the English top flight until he was 27.

Steele added: "Kasper realises now that he's going to be a different goalkeeper, so you can look at him and say that he's got the same mental strength his father had.

"His distribution skills are certainly better than his father because he's more accurate when kicking.

"Kasper has a lot of his father's strengths but he knows he's a different goalkeeper."

Classic! Eric Steele then goes on to make several comparisons of kicking, physical size, etc.
No pressure then, Kaspar.

Future City No1 I have no doubt blah, blah, blah.
Now, what about "the takeover"

Show me the money!!!!

OFF TOPIC - I wonder if the 2 day administrative delay in Bartons transfer has anything to with the takeover - from a financial point of view?

I watched both him and Hart and believe on what i saw that Kasper will prove to be the better option.Hart looks the part but has soft hands and looked a little flappy on crosses.Kasper while a little smaller has good strong hands, constantly talks to his defenders and is a confident kicker(with both feet)but Hart has a better throw.
on another point i too have been experiencing censorship on this site as regards to our CEO.iwould add that the theory of him being a RAG is wide of the mark.Itsalleged he supports a side that plays its matches in Boscombe near Bournmouth.

This is one area where as a club we are very strong just look at the talent we have here. Isakson, just had a clean sheet on Wed for Sweden, Weaver, probably just short of a England place, probably 4 or 5 best English goalie's. Joe Hart, probably the best U21 goalie in Europe I say this as my workmates from Blackpool said without him they wouldn't have had been promoted and lastly Kasper, who when at Bury went on the best run for years. So instead of moaning start cheering as we have probably some of the finest goalies in the Prem.

Great work by the boys at the MEN sportsdesk. Forget about there not being any takeover and the club hurtling to disaster, lets do story on our 4th choice keeper. Get out and find some real stories that matter.

typical muen.....here we are waiting on on most important developments, in the clubs long history, and all muen, can come up with is, a storey of an unproven goal keeper, who hasn`t even played a full game for the club, i`ve got nothing against little kasper, but surely whats happening behind the scenes is far, far more important than a keeper learning is trade at a club, that is no1 for making a fool out of its self, and dragging its long suffering fans with em...

Add another one to the list who have had postings on the CEO censored.
I did see one slip through the net a few weeks ago where a fellow contributor commented "he is as slimy as a box full of frogs" - l think all those that work under him would back that up. He is the man in control and all major decisions at the club go through him.Our plight is more due to his mismanagement than with Wardles' (he just does what he is told).

Godsend to muen our gaggle of goalies, any important news to write about please?
I think it is about time we had some facts, we have been fobbed off with guessing and old stories for long enough now.The fans deserve better than this.We are fast becoming THE laughing stock of the EPL.Come on muen help us out here, no more goalkeeper stories (that no one at this time gives a toss about)find us some important facts about what is happening at our once great club.

Thaksin nominates four businessmen to Manchester City board

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has nominated his former business partners and aides to sit on the board of directors of Manchester City Football Club, it was reported.

Thai Rath reported quoting a source as saying that Thaksin nominated Pongsak Raktapongpaisal, Thirachai Wutthichai, Phairoj Piampongsarn, and Wikrom Khumphairoj to sit on the Manchester City board after he managed to cut the takeover deal.

Well, it'll be easier to sing "sack the board" rather than "we want Sinawatara/Pongsak/Raktapongpaisal/Wutthichai/Piampongsarn/Khumphairoj out"

No proper news yet then for City fans..

The pragmatic faithful that only the colour blue can a man make..I know the road we now travel..its hard on the soul but its the carbon of the steel that makes us strong..So look ahead fellow blues for the horizon offers promise of a brighter day for our club..

The only thing this article taught me is that Eric Steele is still at the club. It always interested me that Isaksson came back in the team after Steele arrived.

Report This Reply

Yes but we can only play one goalkeeper in the first team at a time. As Kaspar is now only 4th choice and Isaksson, Hart and Weaver are still young he'll have to make a permanent transfer move sooner rather than later to progress.

bluemoon1078, I thought that but a friend of mine got it today off a forum he's goes on on football365. I've not been there to look but if it was old the new board members names would have been released in a tabloid, MEN etc by now.

Maybe I should be on the MEN's payroll eh?
