CITY held Champions League semi-finalists Liverpool to earn a point but the Blues failed to score at home for the sixth successive Premiership game.
Stuart Pearce's men are now five games unbeaten, clear of relegation and came closest to ending the deadlock when DaMarcus Beasley hit the bar in the closing stages.
However, they haven't scored in front of their home crowd since the New Year's Day victory against Everton.
City were unchanged side from the side that beat Fulham last time out, a result that surely ended fears of relegation.
Since then Pearce has been concentrating on trying to sort out new contracts for the likes of Sylvain Distin, Michael Ball, Nedum Onuoha and Emile Mpenza, his own future seemingly a lot safer now.
Football took a back seat for a few moments before the start. With the anniversary of Hillsborough this weekend, the Liverpool fans had their familiar “justice” flags on display, and City’s Liverpool-born midfielder Joey Barton pointedly ran to the away fans’ section and placed flowers in front of a giant “Justice for the 96” banner.
Then Liverpool, wearing black armbands, were instantly on the attack and could have had a penalty on five minutes when Jermaine Pennant found himself clear in the box, only to be tugged back by Ball.
Enraged
Referee Uriah Rennie ignored the offence, enraging Liverpool boss Rafel Benitez on the line.
But City were spirited and playing with a freedom not seen while they were haunted by the drop. A long ball was then poorly dealt with by Alvaro Arbeloa, allowing Mpenza a free run. But the Spanish full-back managed to recover with a crucial tackle.
It was Mpenza again on 11 minutes, getting onto the end of a Darius Vassell cross to head inches wide.
Distin produced a fine saving lunge to stop a John Arne Riise cross reaching Kuyt, while Riise lashed an 18-yard shot wide. But City moved forward with confidence.
Mpenza, who has scored vital goals to win games of late to ease the tensions at Eastlands, produced strong and clever movement and he was worrying Carragher, while Barton’s driving runs from midfield were equally effective.
And when Liverpool failed to clear a corner properly, Beasley hammered a drive just over the bar.
Liverpool were looking for the more patient build-up, but the closest they came in the opening half was from a Pennant corner on 31 minutes, the ball eluded Kuyt a yard out, leaving Carragher to blast the ball into the side-netting.
Liverpool needed more sharpness about their play and movement, and one cross early in the second period from Finnan, and a solid header over from Gerrard, suggested greater urgency.
Gerrard drove in another effort and Riise cracked a 20-yard shot inches wide of the far post, but when a Gerrard header put Kuyt away, his lack of pace allowed three defenders to catch him.
Ventured
Daniel Agger and Pennant ventured forward for long-range efforts that flew wide, Liverpool finding it hard to penetrate a well-organised, deep, City defence.
Xabi Alonso, whose passing game was way off beam, got himself booked for a foul on Barton before Stephen Ireland was sent on in place of Mpenza on the hour. Vassell taking up a more central role.
Next into the book was Finnan for a foul on Onuoha, with Liverpool sending on Mark Gonzalez for Riise on 64 minutes. Pennant almost set up Kuyt, Richard Dunne intervening.
Then Barton was booked for a two-footed tackle on Gerrard on 68 minutes.
On 73 minutes the fans were treated to a rarity, a decent shot on goal, Beasley hitting the Liverpool bar after a corner was poorly cleared.
Benitez then opted for the aerial threat of Crouch on 74 minutes, taking off Pennant. City replaced Vassell with Bernardo Corradi with eight minutes left, their late surge producing a string of corners and set-pieces.
Bolo Zenden took over from Mascherano soon after, but there was a big shout from the City fans for handball when a Ball long-throw seemed to drop onto Carragher’s arm.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

Stu...you've got to love his passion for the game....is totally devoid of any ideas regarding our attacking options.
I'd love to keep him on in some capacity but for gods sake...........Boring Boring city !

Finally we had the comic capers on the touchline in injury time. Wigley came running off the bench to urge the players forward for the corner. Then SP sent half of them back. Both waving their arms like mad. It was more like the big top than the COMS.
I'm sure all the SP fans will say it is another stepping stone, etc. We are just a couple of players away, etc. But I'm sorry. If you play such negative football week in week out, you can have the best players in the world and the draw is the most likely result. You have to give attacking players chance to create and SP just won't let them do it. The fact is we haven't scored at home in 3 months. It has a lot less to do with the strikers than SP idea of football. Yawn.

Oh Yeah - Carragher & co. are really known as being lighweights who are easily bowled over by a second rate, half hearted, failed striker. It's a tactic everyone tries against Liverpool. I don't know why I didn't see it before you pointed it out. I stand corrected. SP should employ you as a tactician immediately as you clearly see eye to eye.

Can anyone say that would have happened 3 or 4 weeks ago. Our form has improved drastically and we have become difficult to beat. Instead of always putting the team and manager down all the time, try looking for the positives.

We were negative from start to finish. We have one of the best defences in the league and yet at home, are petrified to commit any players forward, play way too deep and bore me rigid.
What happens next season i Distin and Micah go?
These are a decent squad of players that are just not playing football together.
How many times did you get out of your seat today?Even the Liverpool fans fell asleep after the opening ten minutes.
Great defending though and Beasley was super!

what basis have you got to say that we'll play the same type of football next season? We haven't been too inspiring, but there's nothing to suggest that. The fact is that at times we play some nice football, but it often doesn't come to much, because we don't have an outlet up front. As soon as we can spend cash in the summer, bring in a quality striker to compliment Mpenza and Vass, give Samaras some space to try his hand in the reserves, then we can start to play some nicer football. When we've had a good set of strikers up front, we've played good football, and we showed that last season when Cole and Vassell played, in Pearce's early games with SWP at the end of the season before, and on occasion this season, such as against Villa.
The fact that you've used this game as the one to demonstrate your point is ridiculous as well - how many teams play beautiful football against Liverpool, or against a team which costs (conservatively) four times more?
a point was a good result against a team thrid in the league, and for me it's some encouragement to see that we've become hard to beat. Add some flair next season, like Blackburn did, and things'll start to look much better, and the football will improve too.

Wake up and smell the coffee boys, we are City! We aint gona win the league, we are a mid table team who will flirt with Europe one season and relagation the next. How do you expect us to progress to the next level with 4 mill to spend. Or even 10 mill for that matter.
I would love to see us where Bolton are but Big Sam would never come, and no other big name manager.
The pressure is unrealistic and expectation too high.
Get behind Pierce, he has had a rollercoaster season and yes there has been no firepower, but this late flurry of results is highly comendable.
Why change Pierce for another unprooven manager?! Let's support him and give him a chance!
Fingers crossed for some capital and good signings in the summer!
